Every year, people all over the world run, walk, and ride bikes to raise money for cancer research and to remember a Canadian hero named Terry Fox Terry Fox was born in Winnipeg, Canada, in 1958 He was a very active young man who enjoyed playing sports Prosthetic A prosthetic is a man-made body part that replaces a missing one Today, prostetics are usually made using metal and plastics When Terry was in university, he found out he had bone cancer in his leg Terry lost his leg and had to wear a prosthetic one Even after losing his leg, Terry was still active He liked to run He decided to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research He called this run The Marathon of Hope 1

Soon, people all over Canada knew about Terry s Marathon of Hope Many people came to cheer Terry on and some even ran beside him People were inspired by Terry They gave money to help find a cure for cancer Terry ran 5373 kilometres through five provinces While running in Ontario, he became very sick He had to stop running His cancer had spread to his lungs Almost a year later, on June 29th, 1981, Terry Fox died He was 22 years old People were very sad They wanted to continue what Terry had started So, every September since his death, thousands of people have taken part in Terry Fox Runs They raise money for cancer research by running, just like Terry did Terry Fox called his run The Marathon of Hope Why do you think he called it that? 2
