2 Why a job in Aquatics? Make a difference and potentially save a life by teaching swimming. The best people skills are acquired when you interact daily with adults, children, seniors and special populations. Keep your cool in any emergency because you will receive the best training and will practice with your co-workers to ensure you are ready for anything. This job will prepare you for many careers: nursing, paramedic, doctor, teacher, recreation leadership, youth worker, etc. A good reference can help you get to where you want to go and good job performance here is always something we like to brag about. How To Register. All registrations must be done at the Customer Service Desk located at the Tillsonburg Community Centre 45 Hardy Avenue, Tillsonburg, Ontario N4G 3W9. If you are from out of town please give us a call at and speak with one of our Customer Service Representatives who will assist you in completing your registration. Please remember that all manuals are not included in the Course Price and must be purchased at the time of registration unless the candidate has a current manual already.
3 * Employment and FAQs Employment with The Town of Tillsonburg To become a Lifeguard, Instructor, or Assistant Instructor with the Town of Tillsonburg you will need the following current certifications. Instructor: Swim & Lifesaving Instructor certification, Standard First Aid and National Lifeguard. Lifeguard: National Lifeguard and Standard First Aid certifications. Assistant Instructor: Bronze Cross, Standard First Aid and Assistant Swim Instructor certification. Recertification: Aquatic qualifications must be recertified in order to remain current. National Lifeguard Recertified every two years Swim & Lifesaving Instructor.. Recertified every two years Standard First Aid.. Full course or recertification depending on Candidate please speak with a Program Coordinator for clarification. What to bring to a course: You will need to bring the original certification of the prerequisites required for the course. Be sure to consult individual course descriptions for prerequisites required. Course materials and schedules will be discussed on the first day. Bathing suit(s) and towel(s) will be needed for the water portions of courses. Other items you may be required to bring include: comfortable clothing, a whistle, notebook/paper, pens, lunch/dinner, snacks and money. NO CELL PHONES ALLOWED Important First Aid Certificate Information Holders of Standard First Aid certificates from other agencies may not recertify their certificate with a Lifesaving Society recertification course. They may recertify only with the original certifying agency or take a full course. In order to comply with WSIB regulations individuals must alternate between full courses and recertification courses in order to renew their award. Aquatic Leadership Important Information: Course Attendance: Please note that 100% attendance is required to complete any aquatic leadership course (lateness is equivalent to absence). Prerequisites: Original prerequisite certifications must be presented at the start of each course. Please consult the individual course descriptions to determine what is required. If your Standard First Aid is from another agency a photocopy of the certification must be submitted. Age Requirements: Candidates must turn the identified age prior to the last scheduled day of the course. Unsuccessful completion of a course: Many courses utilize continuous evaluation. Unsuccessful candidates are required to retake the full course.
4 * Lifeguard/Instructor Continuum Become a Lifeguard & Swim Instructor with the Town of Tillsonburg Bronze Medallion Must be 13 yrs or have Bronze Star Bronze Cross Must have Bronze Medallion & Emergency First Standard First Aid with CPR-C is required for all Town of Tillsonburg Aquatic Staff. Lifesaving Society Assistant Instructor Must be 14 yrs and have a current Bronze Cross Standard First Aid with CPR - C Only recognized certifying agencies accepted as an equivalent certification by the Lifesaving Society are: Lifesaving Society, Canadian Red Cross, St John s Ambulance or Canadian Ski Patrol (as outlined in the Ontario Public Pool Regulation 565/90) Lifesaving Society Swim & Lifesaving Instructor Must be 16 yrs by last day of course and have a current Bronze Cross or NLS National Lifeguard Must be 16 yrs by last day of course and have a current Standard First Aid with CPR-C within 2 yrs and Bronze Cross. Bronze Cross does not have to be current. Only First Aid certificates from Lifesaving Society, Canadian Red Cross, St John s Ambulance or Canadian Ski Patrol will be accepted.

6 To view your awards is simple: 1. Click on Find a Member on the right navigation bar 2.Fill in your membership number, uncheck current only box and click on View Record. You can find your membership number on the bottom of any certification card from the Lifesaving Society. If you are not sure if you have the proper qualifications to take a course us at aquatics@tillsonburg.ca or call us at and ask for an Aquatics Coordinator.
7 * Leadership Courses Bronze Medallion Prerequisites: Bronze Star or minimum Age 13 yrs Teaches lifesavers of all ages how to respond in complex water rescue situations. Bronze Medallion develops physical fitness, decision making and judgement skills in preparation for challenging rescues of increased risk. Lifesavers demonstrate stroke efficiency and endurance in a timed swim. Bronze Medallion is a prerequisite for all advanced lifesaving awards. Candidates must be able to complete a 500m swim in 15 minutes or less. Emergency First Aid is included in this course and provides a general knowledge of first aid principles and the emergency treatment of injuries. Skills include: victim assessment, CPR, choking, respiratory and circulatory emergencies such as heart attack and stroke, and how to deal with external bleeding. Successful candidates also receive an Emergency First Aid with CPR B certification. 8 * Leadership Courses Bronze Cross Prerequisites: Bronze Medallion and Emergency First Aid This course is designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training including an introduction to safe supervision in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross teaches the difference between lifesaving and lifeguarding, the principles of emergency procedures, teamwork, and use of specialized equipment. Candidates must be able to complete a 600m swim in 18 minutes or less. Bronze Cross is one of the prerequisites for training in the National Lifeguard (NL) program and Lifesaving Society Instructors certifications. Duration: 20 Hours of Instruction Course Fee: $74.50+HST Exam Fee: $18.50 Manual Required: Canadian Lifesaving Manual $ HST Total: $ Dates November 4 December 16 Exam Date: December 19 4:00pm 6:00pm October 28/29/30 Exam Date: November 7 4:00pm 6:00pm Time(s) Friday Nights (7 wks) 6:00pm 9:00pm Friday 1:00pm 9:00pm Saturday 12:00pm 6:00pm Sunday 12:00pm 6:00pm
9 * Leadership Courses 7 Standard First Aid with CPR-C & AED Prerequisites: None Important SFA Information! In order to comply with WSIB regulations, Standard First Aid award holders may do their first recertification at a recertification course within three years of the original course (Lifeguards two years). Thereafter, individuals must alternate between full courses and recertification courses in order to renew their award. The 16 hour Standard First Aid course provides comprehensive training covering all aspects of first aid and CPR. This course is for those who want an in depth understanding of first aid such as; medical/legal aspects, spinal injuries, heat or cold injuries, bone and joint injuries, abdominal and chest injuries, burns, and medical emergencies. Lifesaving Society Standard First Aid is recognized by the Workplace Safety & Insurance Board and the Ontario Health Regulations. Standard First Aid is one of the prerequisites to NL. 10 * Leadership Courses Standard First Aid with CPR-C & AED Recertification Prerequisites: Lifesaving Society Standard First Aid with CPR-C (full course) done within the last three years (Lifeguards two years). Important SFA Information! Holders of Standard First Aid certificates from other agencies may not recertify their certificate with a Lifesaving Society recertification course. They may recertify only with the original certifying agency or take a full course. In order to comply with WSIB regulations, Standard First Aid award holders may do their first recertification at a recertification course within three years of the original course (Lifeguards two years). Thereafter, individuals must alternate between full courses and recertification courses in order to renew their award. The 8 hour Standard First Aid recertification course provides a review of first aid and CPR skills. Practical skills will be assessed through scenarios and knowledge will be assessed with a written evaluation. Candidates should review the course content and practice their skills prior to the recertification course. Duration: 8 Hours of Instruction Course Fee: $ HST Exam Fee: $18.50 Manual Required: First Aid Manual $13.00+HST Total: $90.26 Dates Day(s) Time(s) November 13 Sunday 10:00am 4:30pm
11 * Leadership Courses Lifesaving Society Assistant Swim Instructor Prerequisites: Minimum age 14 yrs by last day of course, Bronze Cross or NL. Through classroom learning and in water practice, the Lifesaving Society Assistant Instructor course prepares candidates to help certified instructors with swimming and lifesaving classes. Candidates are introduced to key principles of learning and teaching, as they master basic progressions of teaching. The roles and responsibilities of instructors and their assistants are emphasized. Duration: 15 Hours of Instruction Course Fee: $ HST Manual fee: $5.00 +HST Exam Fee: $27.00 Total: $99.66 Dates Days Time(s) November 26/27 Sat/Sun 8:30am 4:30pm Teaching swimming changed my life I love my job!
12 * Leadership Courses Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor & Lifesaving Instructor Prerequisites: Minimum age 16 yrs by last day of course, Bronze Cross Upon successful completion of this dual award, candidates will be able to instruct the new Lifesaving Society s Learn to Swim program consisting of Parent & Tot, Preschool and Swimmer age groups and Advanced lifesaving awards such as Swim Patrol, and the Bronze Awards. In this course time is devoted in both classroom and water sessions to developing skills in the areas of class management, teaching, evaluation, leadership, communication and administration. These awards remain current for two years from the date of certification. Candidates must bring proof of prerequisite awards to the first class. Duration: 40 Hours of Instruction Course Fee: $ HST Exam Fee: $54.00 Manual fee: $ HST Total: $ Dates February 17, 18, 19, 24, 25, 26 Time(s) Friday 6:00pm 9:00pm Saturday 12:00 8:30pm Sunday 12:00 8:30pm
13 * Leadership Courses National Lifeguard Prerequisites: Minimum age 16 yrs by last day of course, Bronze Cross certification and a Standard First Aid CPR-C Certification from one of the agencies listed below. The Lifesaving Society only accepts Standard First Aid certificates that are recognized by the Ontario Public Pools Regulation (565/90). The accepted agencies are the Lifesaving Society, Canadian Red Cross, St. John s Ambulance and Canadian Ski Patrol. The National Lifeguard certification is the standard measurement of lifeguard performance in Canada. This course is designed to develop sound understanding of lifeguarding principles, good judgement and a mature, responsible attitude toward the role of the lifeguard. The program emphasizes teamwork, leadership, communications, and the prevention of accidents and the treatment of medical emergencies. Participants are taught advanced lifeguarding skills in a lecture format and are required to demonstrate competency in managing a variety of emergency situations within an aquatic environment. Successful completion of this course will certify the candidate in the only nationally recognized lifeguarding award. This award remains current for two years from the date of certification. 14 * Leadership Courses National Lifeguard Recertification Prerequisites: NL Certification and 16 yrs of age This program is designed to test the candidate s lifeguarding skills in order to maintain current certification at the National Lifeguard level. Candidates are required to bring their own whistle and proof of original certification. Duration: 8 Hours Course Fee: $ HST Exam Fee: $30.50 Manual Required: Alert Manual $ HST Optional: Lifesaving Essentials Kit $ HST Candidate must provide the following items OR purchase the kit Pocket Mask and Whistle Total: $ Dates January 7 Time(s) 10:00am 2:00pm About The Lifesaving Society As Canada s Lifeguarding experts, we set the standards for water safety in Canada. We work to prevent drowning and water-related injury through our training programs, Water Smart public education, water incident rescuer, aquatic safety management, and lifesaving sport. 15 Lifesaving Sport Lifesaving sport is the only sport whose skills are first learned for humanitarian purposes. Qualified instructors will instruct the Lifesaving Society s Sports Fundamentals program. This program is targeted for children 7 15 year olds who have completed Swimmer 3 or higher. Swimmers will also earn program awards. Mondays 6:30pm 7:30pm September 12 October 31 *No class October 10 (7 wk session) November 7 December 19 (7 wk session) Little Mermaids This beginner Synchro program is designed for the advanced younger swimmer who ls looking to give Synchro a try. Participants will work on Swim Synchro Levels and be awarded with a badge when levels are completed. Fun routines and great music are also part of this program.
