Magna Carta: Symbol of Freedom Under Law LAW DAY is celebrated by local and national bar associations on or near May 1 of each year. The purpose of LAW DAY is to bring awareness and an appreciation of our country s legal system to the local communities and, in particular, to the students. This year, the Omaha Bar Association and the Nebraska Paralegal Association are again sponsoring a poster contest as part of their annual LAW DAY activities. The poster contest is open to students in 5 th grade. The LAW DAY theme this year is: Magna Carta: Symbol of Freedom Under Law About the theme: Perhaps more than any other document in human history, Magna Carta has come to embody the simple but enduring truth: No one, no matter how powerful, is above the law. In the eight centuries that have elapsed since Magna Carta was signed in 1215, it has taken root as an international symbol of the rule of law and as an inspiration for many basic rights Americans hold dear today, including due process, habeas corpus, trial by jury, and the right to travel. Law Day, 2015, will provide an opportunity to explore how the principal of the rule of law has impacted our understanding of individual freedom in American society.
