Georgia State is hosting the GSU Thanksgiving Classic this weekend featuring GSU,, and Mercer. The Panthers are coming off a loss at Georgia Tech on Tuesday. Kierra Henry was the leading scorer with a career-high 17 points. Sophomores Jada Lewis and Madison Newby were named preseason All-Sun Belt. Jada Lewis was the 2016-17 Sun Belt Freshman of the Year and Madison Newby was the 2015-16 SBC Freshman of the Year. Madison Newby took a medical redshirt last season after sustaining an injury after the third game of the season. Georgia State returns its leading scorer from a year ago in Jada Lewis, but loses its leading rebounder as Tiffany Holston graduated after the season. Georgia State returns three starters in Jada Lewis, Kierra Henry and K.K. Williams. There are no seniors on this year s team and there are nine players that did not return from last season. GSU welcomes four transfers that can play right away in Shay Fluker, Juliet James, Victoria Middlebrooks and Janessa Murphy. The Panthers had a challenging start to the season, facing Florida, No. 4 Mississippi State and Georgia Tech on the road for the first three games. Head coach Sharon Baldwin has two new members on the staff in Tron Griffin and Jasmine Young. Young played for Baldwin at East Carolina (2005-09). Junior transfer Shay Fluker played 38 minutes and recorded a double-double in her first game as a Panther, finishing with 15 points and 13 rebounds. In total, seven players played their first game in a GSU uniform. The Panthers got off to a hot start and led the Gators for nearly the entire first half, but Florida pulled ahead in the second half and held off the Panthers who cut an 18-point deficit to single-digits in the fourth quarter. POWER-5 The Panthers started the season with a challenging first three games. GSU played three Power-5 teams in Florida, Mississippi State and Georgia Tech to open the 2017-18 season. NEXT UP Georgia State continues the GSU Thanksgiving Classic Sunday at 2 p.m. against on ESPN3. BACK-TO-BACK Jada Lewis made an immediate impact for Georgia State as a freshman last season and was named the 2016-17 Sun Belt Freshman of the Year. In 2015-16, it was Madison Newby who became a main contributor right away and she was honored as the 2015-16 Sun Belt Freshman of the Year, giving Georgia State the award in back-toback years. PRESEASON HONORS Redshirt-sophomore Madison Newby was named to the All-Sun Belt Third Team despite playing only three games last season. Newby suffered an injury in practice following the third game of the year and missed the remainder of the season before being granted a medical redshirt. In the three games she played, Newby averaged 9.3 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. Jada Lewis was named second-team all-conference after being named the 2016-17 Sun Belt Freshman of the Year last season. HEAD COACH SHARON BALDWIN Head Coach Sharon Baldwin is in her eighth season at Georgia State. In 2016-17, Georgia State s Tiffany Holston was named the Sun Belt Newcomer of the Year and guard Jada Lewis was the Sun Belt Freshman of the Year., giving Baldwin back-to-back SBC Freshman of teh Year winners. In 2015-16, the Panthers had the youngest team in the Sun Belt and the development process was underway as four freshmen played more than 2,100 minutes, while five transfers played their first season at GSU and two new assistant coaches joined the staff. Madison Newby was voted Sun Belt Freshman of the Year after leading the league in assists and ranking top 50 in the NCAA. Baldwin picked up her 200th career win as a head coach on Dec. 29, 2010, vs. Mississippi Valley State (91-65) and guided GSU to the 500th all-time win in school history on Jan. 9, 2011, in a win over Hofstra (84-70). In eight years, she turned around the East Carolina women s basketball program, winning 126 games, while earning postseason bids to the NCAA and WNIT tournaments. The Lady Pirates won the C-USA Tournament in 2007. Her return to Atlanta was a homecoming as she played her prep ball in Smyrna and her college ball at both Kennesaw State and Georgia. She was an assistant coach at Georgia and a head coach at Life in Marietta to start her career. In 2009-10, her 23-11 ECU team was No. 37 in the NCAA in scoring, while ranking No. 12 in 3-point field goal percentage, No. 14 in overall field goal percentage, No. 19 in assists and No. 42 in rebound margin among the 345 Divison I colleges and universities. She was the Atlantic Sun Conference Coach of the Year in her only season in Macon. She first gained notice as NAIA National Coach of the Year at Life. She began that program with a final No. 7 ranking in its first year in 2010 and then produced a team ranked No.1 in the national polls in her second season (2001). In her first 12 years as a head coach before coming to GSU, Baldwin had a 207-161 overall record. Her 126 wins at ECU are a school record. As a collegiate player, Baldwin played her first two seasons near her home at Kennesaw State, where she was as an allconference player with 831 points in two years. As a student, she transferred to Georgia for her final two seasons under coach Landers and was a starting guard and team captain her senior campaign. The Bulldogs finished No. 7, with five wins over top 20 teams, including a nationally televised win over No. 3 Tennessee. Baldwin led the team in free throw percentage (79%). As a junior, her team was 23-7 and No. 10 in the final AP poll. Baldwin earned a bachelor s degree in education from Georgia in 1991 and completed her master s of education in 1997, also at Georgia. She has two children: Luke and Samantha.

Made GSU debut on 11/11/17 at Florida. Played two seasons at Westlake HS after two seasons at Arlington Christian School. Earned a spot on the GHSA 6A All-State, GACA All-State and AJC All-State teams in 2016. Was also named to the GACA Junior South All-Star team MVP this year after helping guide Westlake to the GHSA Elite Eight for the second straight year.
