The Panthers will play at FAU Saturday and at FIU on Monday. The Gene Hill era got off to a strong start on Wednesday as GSU defeated UNCG in the season opener. Walnatia Wright led GSU in both scoring and rebounding, finishing with a double-double at 15 points and 11 rebounds. New head coach Gene Hill is the 10th head coach in GSU program history. He sits at 1-0 now after Wednesday s victory. While the coaching staff is new, the Panthers return 10 players from last season including four starters. Veterans K.K. Williams and Kierra Henry have played a combined 163 games in a GSU uniform. Of GSU s eight seniors this year, Henry and Williams are the two that started their careers at GSU. Kierra Henry led the team in scoring last season (14.2 ppg) and led the Sun Belt in free throw shooting (81%). After sitting out last season due to transfer rules, forwards Allison Johnson and Walnatia Wright look to bolster the GSU roster and bring depth to the post positions. Wright totaled a double-double in her debut on Wednesday and Johnson came up just shy with nine rebounds and eight points. Redshirt sophomore Jada Lewis returns after missing nearly all of last season due to injury. Lewis was honored as the Sun Belt Freshman of the Year for the season. GSU will play a challenging non-conference schedule, including hosting Georgia Tech at home and visiting Tallahassee, Fla., to face #11 Florida State. All GSU home games will be broadcast live on ESPN+ this season. Probable Starters (stats from ) Pos # Name...Ht Cl. 3 HEAD COACH GENE HILL With a long track record of winning and ties to Atlanta, NC State assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Gene Hill was named the head women s basketball coach at Georgia State University by Director of Athletics Charlie Cobb on April 19, Following five successful seasons helping lead the Wolfpack to a record, including three NCAA Tournament appearances, Hill becomes the 11th head coach of the Panthers in program history. Hill is coming off his most successful season in Raleigh, as the Wolfpack went 26-9 and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. Gene Hill is a proven coach and recruiter who knows Atlanta and what it takes to build a winning program, Cobb said. He brings a tremendous amount of energy and passion to our program. Gene has succeeded at the highest level and guided student-athletes to success on and off the court. We are delighted to welcome Gene Hill and his family to Georgia State as our women s basketball coach. In his first season at NC State ( ), Hill helped lead the Wolfpack to a 25-8 record, a fourth-place finish in the ACC standings, and an NCAA Tournament appearance. After an campaign in and a season in , Hill helped lead the Wolfpack to the NCAA Tournament Round of 32 in with an impressive 23-9 record (12-4 ACC). He played a large role in mentoring 2017 All-ACC guards Miah Spencer and Dominique Wilson, both of whom were seniors during the successful season, eclipsed the 1,000-point mark at NC State, and went on to play professionally overseas following graduation. Prior to his five years at NC State, Hill worked at Georgia Tech from as the Yellow Jackets made four consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament, including the program s first Sweet 16 appearance in Hill was heavily involved in the player development of three WNBA draft picks between , including first-rounders Alex Montgomery and Sasha Goodlett at Georgia Tech. I couldn t be more excited to have the opportunity to lead Georgia State Women s Basketball into the future, and to join the Georgia State family, Hill said. Throughout this process, it was clear to me that Charlie, Kelcey and the team are committed to excellence both on and off the court, which has been staples of programs I ve been a part of throughout my career. I m excited to hit the ground running and to lead a program that the University and local communities will be proud of. Hill was one of just 14 assistant coaches from around the country chosen to participate in Advocates for Athletic Equity s (AAE) annual Achieving Coaching Excellence (ACE) Professional Development Program for basketball coaches in June The program is recognized as helping to boost the careers of some of the top minority coaches in the college game.
