P AGE 3 How are Your Shoes? From the President s Desk. s I finished my ride yesterday, I had quite a bit of time to think about my tires. The rain was pouring down, and I was in the drops, staring at my front tire and trying make myself as small and as warm as possible. Bob Riley and I were on the Falling Waters Trail, finishing the Saturday morning ride. I was glad I was on the trail so I did not need to be concerned about traffic, being seen in the rain by other drivers, or about the condition of the road. I just thought about my tires. I usually put about 2000 miles on my road bike each year, and each year just before Dalmac I move my front tire to the back wheel and put a new tire on my front wheel. My logic is that I want to prevent tire failure on the long days of Dalmac, especially when I am going downhill at over 40 miles per hour. Moving my front tire to back wheel is almost like putting a new tire on the back, and the new tire on the front gives me the assurance I have done all I can to prevent tire failure on the front (i.e. steering) wheel. I also want to get the most for my tire dollars, and by August the center of the back tire is pretty well squared off, and the wear indicators are faded. The front tire still has its smooth, rounded profile and looks very much like a new tire. Recently I noticed that this concern for my bike tires is very much in contrast to my old station wagon, Little Blackie. I use that car mainly in the winter while my Jeep is in storage. I have a set of winter tires, and when I had the summer tires put on this spring, my mechanic told me they were pretty old. He said they could probably get me through the summer, as long as I mainly used the car for driving around town. I thought they would be fine until fall. But as I drove Little Blackie on I-94 I found I had a wheel balancing problem around 70 mph. I talked with my mechanic and he explained that due to the condition of the tires they could not be balanced any better. He said the only way to get rid of the balancing problem was to replace the tires. New shoes for Little Blackie was what was needed to fix the problem. I realized then I had been focusing too much on tire longevity and not enough on tire performance or safety. In a car, that is easy to do. With today s tires, flats are less and less frequent, and tire failure is rare. The consequence of failure of a car tire is usually nothing more than easing the car to a safe stop, getting out your cell phone and calling someone else to come and change your tire for you. Too often cyclists view their bike tires like their car s tires. But the consequence of tire failure on your bike is very different from your car. t the very least it is an inconvenience, and that is if you have a spare tube, and the tire hasn t had a sidewall blowout, and if you have a pump, and if you have enough daylight left and the know how to fix the tire and get back home safely. If a tire failure occurs as you are going downhill or around a sharp curve, the consequence could be that you crash. That is something you definitely don t want to happen. So what is a bicyclist to do? Here is my suggestion: Before you go for your next ride, wash your tires and inspect them under a good light. If you find the wear indicators have almost disappeared, or if you find cuts or cracks in your tires you may want to replace them before they fail while you are on the road. If you find a bulge anywhere in the tire, you will definitely want to re-place it before your next ride. Then, before each ride wipe your tires clean with a wet rag and inspect them. That way you will know the condition of your tires before you ride, and you ll be able to address any problems when it is convenient for you. Happy Riding! Mike Woizeschke June 2015

A Religious Question by Adam P AGE 4 Essential Equipment Tips Chain maintenance is one of the most controversial aspects of bicycle mechanics. Chain durability is affected by riding style, gear choice, whether the bicycle is ridden in rain or snow, type of soil in the local terrain, type of lubricant, lubrication techniques, and the sizes and condition of the bicycle's sprockets. Because there are so many variables, it has not been possible to do controlled experiments under real-world conditions. As a result, everybody's advice about chain maintenance is based on anecdotal "evidence" and experience. Experts disagree on this subject, sometimes bitterly. This is sometimes considered a "religious" matter in the bicycle community, and much vituperative invective has been uttered in this regard between different schismatic cults. This article is based on my personal and professional experience and my own theories. If you disagree with them, I won't call you a fool or a villain, you may be right. I hope you will extend me the same courtesy. The above paragraphs are great words stolen from Sheldon Brown. Here at we are not asked this question enough but we try to educate on the issue as much as we can. Chains should be replaced every 1500-2000 miles. There are several reasons for this. Extended life of your cassette Extended life of your chain rings More money saved Improved shifting If the chain remains on for too long, this will prematurely wear down your new expensive cassette, and a new chain will skip all over the place creating a dangerous riding experience. This will force you to buy a new cassette. Take this a little further in mileage and the chain rings will be next. This can easily be a $400 expense that was preventable with a new $40 chain a few thousand miles ago. Thank for your ear, Adam
