The 2001 season is the 20th anniversary of the Division I Women s Softball Championships. NCAA Selection Process The Division I Women s Softball Championship Committee selected teams from the following eight regions to participate in the championship: Central, East, Northeast, South, Mideast, Midwest, West and Pacific. Twenty-one conferences were granted automatic qualification for the 2001 championship. Six conferences participated in a play-in to determine the remaining three automatic berths. In the NCAA Region II at Los Angeles, Fresno State (Western Athletic Conference) and Coastal Carolina (Big South Conference) were the only two teams to earn the NCAA automatic bid. Bulldogs Snag Fourth Straight WAC Crown Since joining the Western Athletic Conference in 1983, the Bulldogs have finished among the top three. Entering the 2001 as the preseason favorite, Fresno State captured the WAC s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament last weekend. As a result, Fresno State is the first program to capture five WAC titles and the first ever to win four consecutive crowns. The Bulldogs have posted an 81-7 (.920) mark in the last four years with five league titles in the past six years.

As only the second NCAA Division I coach to amass 900 or more career victories, she owns an impressive 830-241-1 (.770) mark with the Bulldogs and a 22-year career record of 979-321-3 (.750). Entering last season as the all-time winningest active coach in NCAA Division I history, she became the NCAA's all-time career win leader on March 23, 2000 with a 2-1 victory over CS Northridge. Having directed the Bulldogs to the WCWS 10 times since 1986, Wright has collected 12 outright or shared conference titles, a WAC tournament championship, 10 regional championship crowns, and 16 straight NCAA postseason appearances. With a NCAA title and three national runner-up trophies to her credit, Wright is the only coach in school history to garner region coach of the year honors (seven times) and is the third head coach overall at Fresno State to capture National Coach of the Year honors (1998). An assistant coach for the 1996 USA Olympic softball gold medal team and leading the USA Softball National Team to a gold medal at the 1998 ISF World Championships, Wright has averaged 53 wins a year and has coached 42 All-Americans and 10 GTE Academic All-Americans. 1,000th Division I Win on the Horizon Wright picked up her 800th victory at Fresno State at the NFCA Leadoff Classic on Feb. 25 with a 3-1 victory over Missouri. Just 11 wins shy of being the first NCAA Division I coach to collect 1,000 Division I victories, Wright tallied her 950th career victory against Colorado State on March 7. Last year, she notched her 900th career win against Texas on March 4 and was the second Division I head coach to amass 900 or more career wins. In the Books Having been featured in USA Today (May 9, 2000) and showcased in Sports Illustrated's "Faces in the Crowd" (May 22, 2000) for her coaching success, Wright has been singled out in a book documenting 42 of the most successful and illustrious female coaches and athletic administrators over the past 30 years. Poole has gone from a 10-10 mark with two shutouts and 54 strikeouts in 128.1 innings for a 3.55 ERA in her rookie season to a 20-6 record with 11 shutouts (combined for five) and 79 strikeouts in 176.2 innings for a 1.23 ERA. Having strung together five consecutive shutout wins, including a 1-0 victory over No. 4 Stanford, Poole has been nationally ranked in ERA for two weeks (No. 47, 1.02 ERA on April 9 and No. 41, 1.00 ERA on April 16). Poole owns a season-best streak of 47.2 scoreless innings and during this streak she gave up 32 hits, walked nine and struck out 16 in nine appearances. Opening the year with a streak of 34.2 innings without an earned run, she also opened with a streak of 31.0 scoreless innings. In Poole s last 93.0 innings, she has yielded 13 runs -- 12 earned -- 17 walks while striking out 37 for a 0.90 ERA. Poole also owns a pair of one-hitters, two-hitters and three-hitters. Sheriff West is the Best Sophomore catcher Pam West (Corona) has been laying down the law for the Bulldogs, err, the opponents who try to swipe a base. Throwing out 18 runners for 72% of would-be basestealers (7-25), West has thrown out the fourth most in a single season and the most since Christa Yorke in 1994 (20). In the nation, West leads all catchers behind the plate in percentage of runners thrown out. Not Just Another Fozzy Bear Junior third baseman Lindsay Fossatti (Tustin), a two-time First Team all-wac and a NCAA all-west Region selection, shares the team lead in RBI (29) and has hit safely in six of her last 11 games with a.420 average (9-21) that includes four runs, 13 RBI, home run (grand slam), five walks, two hit by pitch, sacrifice fly and sacrifice hit. In her last 26 games, she is hitting.330 (27-81) with 14 runs, three doubles, home run (grand slam), 15 RBI, two hit by pitch, 14 walks, 1-1 stolen bases, sacrifice fly, sacrifice hit and 33 total bases for a.400 slugging percentage. With a team-high 28 walks on the season, Fossatti ranks seventh in most walks by a Bulldog in a single season. In addition, Fossatti ranks No. 8 at Fresno State in career home runs with eight. What is so special about No. 8 and ranking eighth? It was Fossatti s first career grand slam and it came on the road against No. 2 Arizona. She had her first career multiple-hit home run game earlier against Georgia. Witt is En Fuego Senior and two-time All-America center fielder Becky Witt (Reseda) owns a.380 career batting average and has broken into three NCAA Top 15 records in runs (No. 9, 220), hits (No. 10, 327) and at bats (No. 12, 855). Just six games shy of ranking No. 25 all-time in the NCAA history book in games played, Witt has shattered the school s career record in stolen bases (50) this season while also tying a 20- In the Top 25 Career Recordbooks (as of 5/14/2001) Category NCAA FS WAC Stolen Bases (50) -- #1 #7 Runs (220) #9 #2 #2 Hits (327) #10 #3 #3 Batting Ave (.382) -- #4 #6 At Bats (855) #12 #4 #2 Total Bases (366) not kept #7 #8 Slugging Pct. Against the Top 25, Witt is batting.400 (22-55) with 10 runs, two doubles, five walks, hit by pitch, 3-3 stolen bases, RBI and 24 total bases in 16 games. Currently, Witt has an eight-game hitting streak going in which she is batting.580 (17-29) with 12 runs, RBI, two walks, 4-4 stolen bases, hit by pitch and 17 total bases for a.580 slugging percentage.
