Mid Year Newsletter June 2016 The Inverloch Classic Wooden Dinghy Regatta This 2017 Regatta is about displaying classic wooden sailing dinghies both on and off the water. Many were once common but are now rare and by focusing on the beauty of the wood crafting, rigging and history of these boats it is hoped people will appreciate them more fully and participate in their restoration and conservation. Over the Australia Day Weekend the Regatta also highlights aspects of Inverloch s unique seaside history.

South Gippsland Yacht Club Commodore Building on the past three successful Inverloch Classic Wooden Dinghy Regattas, the South Gippsland Yacht Club with its Regatta sub-committee, service clubs, the historical society and Bass Coast Shire Council is supporting the fourth Regatta to be held over the Australia Day weekend in January 2017. While we have a plan in place the detailed arrangements will be finalised after consultation with the Inverloch and wider business community whose assistance makes the Regatta happen. This newsletter is to let you know when the Regatta will be held, its broad framework and for the fourth year in a row, I extend a very warm welcome to all sailors, to join us at South Gippsland Yacht Club [SGYC] to celebrate the history and evolution of dinghy sailing, not only in Inverloch but as it occurred at many seaside towns around much of Australia s coastline. Inverloch s Regattas commenced more than 100 years ago and early interest in sailing on Anderson Inlet no doubt inspired Len Morris to develop and launch his Inverloch 11 footer in 1928 which shortly after became the Moth and then the International Moth Class. It s great to see the growing number of classic Moths attending the Regatta. In addition to presenting our sailing heritage the yacht club also works with community groups to highlight other aspects of Inverloch s unique seaside history. Since its start on Australia Day in 2014, the Regatta has really come alive as a community event, one that Inverloch, the South Gippsland Yacht Club and all those people involved can truly be proud. Every year, this event is wonderful, not only in showcasing the history of classic wooden dinghies, but also in providing the opportunity for current owners and skippers to demonstrate their prowess in building and/or maintaining these dinghies which are sailed under competitive conditions which can be viewed by many visitors. Even if a person does not own one of these classic wooden dinghies, they can learn to appreciate the workmanship, the timbers used and the foibles of sailing them. You are invited to participate in the Regatta s sailing, boat displays and social program which provides for people to get together, meet old friends and make new acquaintances. The 2017 Regatta is envisaged to be an outstanding regatta for the participants, whether sailing their wooden dinghies or displaying them for all to see. Participants will be provided with the opportunity to enjoy a social sail up the inlet and also test their skills in the Regatta race which is dedicated to classic wooden dinghies. There will be displays of classic wooden dinghies for the public and awards will be provided to most worthy winners of the various categories. Sailing across Anderson Inlet and landing at Point Smyth in 1926. SGYC is renowned for its family friendly environment and promotion of juniors learning to sail as well as providing a fun place to sail. The Yacht Club is continuing to nurture junior sailors who are essential to the continued success of the club and the future of sailing in general. Whilst the Regatta is about classic wooden dinghies, and we are seeking the iconic classes and rare historic boats, it will continue to reward young people for their efforts and provide encouragement for all young sailors whether their sailing a Minnow or crewing on the family Mirror. It is a privilege to be able to work with the community and business partners who continue to support the Regatta and make it the success that it is. Our yacht club is a small regional club with a big heart so we would welcome you to spirit your impressive classic timber dinghy out of the garage or shed and head for Inverloch in South Gippsland for the Australia Day weekend in 2017. We hope that by providing this early notice of the 2017 Regatta you will have efficient time to secure your accommodation and if required also get that wooden dinghy restoration project underway so it s completed in time for the Regatta. When seeking accommodation or supplies and services please keep in mind the business partners that make this Regatta what it is. History Snippets Keith Wilson was a keen Indian rider in the 1920s and held a number of records at one time. This photo was taken near Longford, close to the Simmons Plains speedway, about 30 km south of Launceston. Keith was aged twenty at the time of the photo and rode for the Northern Tasmanian Indian agents, John King and Son of Launceston. Keith is the great uncle of yacht club member and International Canoe sailor Tim Wilson. ----------------------------------------------- Bill Cashin and Jane Gilbert beside Captain Roberts Gypsy Moth on the flat beach near Screw Creek in 1932.
