Fall Sports Roundup: Cougar Soccer s Magical Run to State Finals Soccer in State Finals match: LEFT, L-R: Hannah Gray, Kara Trotman, and Megan DeTuerk take the field at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup. RIGHT, L-R: Malia Hanson and Lucy Parkhurst hug Julia Causbie (back to camera) celebrate as HNA takes a first-half lead on Julia s goal. U nheralded and sorely under-rated, HNA s varsity soccer team quietly fought their way into the WIAA State soccer tournament, where they launched an upset-filled run to the State title game. Only a late, come-from-behind goal by undefeated Gig Harbor spoiled the Cougars Cinderella run, 2 1; the silver-medal trophy marked only the second State title game appearance in the history of Holy Names Academy s soccer program. Congratulations to all the Cougars and their coaches including Head Coach Julianna Sackeyfio, voted Metro League Coach of the Year by her peers! Soccer Record: Overall program record 38-9-4. Varsity: 16-7-1. JV: 12-1-2. JVC: 10-1-1. Post-Season Highlights: After a great 5-0 victory over Nathan Hale to begin playoffs, varsity dropped two big matches against Lakeside and West Seattle. As the team s window to State was narrowing, the Cougars rallied to defeat Eastside Catholic 5-1, and then, in a last-chance, pigtail game against Lake Washington, held on to a 1-0 lead to clench the fifth-seed spot to State. In the opening rounds of the championship, the Cougars defeated Snohomish 2-0, then faced heavily favored Seattle Prep in the quarterfinals, besting their Metro League rivals, 2-1. Buoyed by that upset, the Cougars took on Prairie in the semifinal match, securing their spot in the championship game with a commanding 3-1 victory. In the title match on November 17, the Cougars fought hard to defend a 1-0 halftime lead, but a late comeback by undefeated Gig Harbor resulted in a 2-1 loss. From brand-new swimmers to the elite, they exceeded all expectations by out performing themselves at every dual meet. I think this is the best we have done in years when it comes to dual-meet results and just great practices.
