Walking to School Safely The weather is nice, and school is starting up again soon. Walking to school is fun and can be a great way for you and your children to get some exercise. For those times where accompanying your child is not an option, here are some safety tips from saferoutesinfo.org to teach your children to stay safe on their walk to school: Walk in groups. Children should be accompanied by an adult whenever possible. If that is not possible, coordinate a group of students. Teach children to never get into vehicles with strangers. Remind your children to stay on the route you have designated, and to avoid taking shortcuts. Teach your children to report any bullying that may occur while walking to and from school. Be seen. Have your children wear bright clothing. If it is dark, wear reflective gear or carry a flashlight. Look for traffic. Look for moving vehicles in driveways and at every intersection. Cross the street safely. Stop at the curb or edge of the street. Look left, right, left and behind and in front for traffic. Wait until no traffic is coming and begin crossing. Keep looking for traffic until you have finished crossing. Remember to walk, don t run across the street. Obey traffic signs, signals and adult school crossing guards. Teach your children about each traffic sign and signal and why it is important to obey each one.
