Charleston RiverDogs Game Notes Thursday, July 14 th, 2011 7:05 P.M. Charleston RiverDogs (9-11, 26-44) @ Greensboro Grasshoppers (11-9, 40-30) Today day s Starters RHP Jose A. Ramirez (3-3, 4.79) vs. RHP Jheyson Manzueta (2-8, 6.69) Upcoming Probables Friday-GBO: RHP Zachary Neal (5-6, 4.44) vs. LHP Steve Evarts (0-2, 3.86) Saturday-WV: RHP Tyler Waldron (6-5, 4.48) vs. RHP Zach Nuding (6-6, 4.54) Sunday-WV: RHP Trent Stevenson (0-3, 6.65) vs. RHP Shane Greene (3-10, 4.25) Monday-WV: LHP Zach Fuesser (2-3, 2.42) vs. RHP Scottie Allen (3-1, 6.95) Grasshoppers Bound Past RiverDogs, 11-6 Daniel Black and Ryan Fisher smacked home runs as the Greensboro Grasshoppers toppled the Charleston RiverDogs, 11-6, on Wednesday night. A night after Charleston plated two first inning runs, Greensboro jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a first inning marker against RiverDogs starter Scottie Allen (3-1). Perio and Ozuna stroked consecutive singles to put runners on the corners with nobody out. Allen got a double play ball for Christian Yelich to clear the bases, but that was enough to score Perio and give the Grasshoppers the advantage. Charleston pieced together a two-run rally in the top of the second to take a 2-1 lead versus Greensboro hurler Rett Varner (5-2). Mike Ferraro got the ball rolling with a single, and Garrison Lassiter followed up with a single of his own on a line drive to center field. Jose Mojica then grounded into a fielder s choice, plating Ferraro to knot the score. Eduardo Sosa kept the line moving with another single, and Anderson Feliz punched the final base knock of the frame through the left side of the infield to stake the RiverDogs to the lead. Greensboro tied the game at 2-2 with a single swing of the bat in the last of the second, as Black swatted his fifth homer of the year deep over the right field fence. The Grasshoppers played long ball again to start the merry-go-round in the fourth, as Fisher went yard for the second consecutive night, cracking his 13 th blast of the campaign over the right field wall. Allen recovered to retire the next two batters, but could not find the capper on the inning as the RiverDogs deficit to 7-2. Aaron Dudley began the assault when he was hit by a pitch, and later came around to score on a Perio single. Ozuna stepped to the dish next, and scalded a two-run double to left to extend the Greensboro lead to 6-2. Ozuna then showcased his speed to swipe third for his 11 th stolen base of the year, and advanced the final 90 feet to the plate on Yelich s single. Allen yielded the seven runs on ten hits, while failing to strike out a single man. Greensboro extended its lead to 11-2 as Charleston reliever Tommy Kahnle labored through the sixth. Greensboro filled the sacks with one out thatnks to a Dudley walk and singles by Perio and Ozuna. Yelich built on his already solid night, rapping a single to right field for an 8-2 lead. Kahnle s issues with control reared its ugly head again, as he issued back-to-back walks to Mark Canha and Fisher, ending his night and putting Charleston in an eight-run hole. Wilfredo Giminez drove in the final run of the inning with a groundout against Manny Barreda. The RiverDogs flexed their own muscle to cut into their hefty deficit in the top of the seventh, compiling four runs off Varner to draw within 11-6. A wild pitch scored Mojica from third base for the first tally of the inning, before Ramon Flores and Kelvin De Leon launched back-to-back home runs for the other three runs. Varner was mostly effective until being bitten by the long ball, yielding six runs on ten hits and a walk, while striking out one 6.2 frames. Michael Ojala and Grant Dayton combined to throw 2.1 innings of scoreless relief to preserve the 11-6 final outcome for the Grasshoppers. Today s Starters: CHA: Right-hander Jose A. Ramirez looks to bounce back from a pair of rough outings as he makes his 10th start since rejoining the RiverDogs from the High-A Tampa Yankees. Ramirez has lasted just 4.0 innings in each of his two showings, yielding seven earned runs on 13 hits, while managing to strike out nine. The 21-year old Dominican has had a knack for the strikeout, registering more than one per inning over 47 frames with the Charleston. The fire baller has been hurt by the long ball, however, allowing 7 since coming back to the SAL. GBO: Right-hander Jheyson Manzueta takes the bump as the Grasshoppers go in search of their fourth consecutive win. Opponents are hitting only.257 against Manzueta, but his walk total has contributed greatly to his 6.69 ERA. The 21-year old Dominican has yielded 54 free passes over 71.1 innings, while netting only 55 strikeouts during that time. Manzueta has also struggled mightily at home, pitching to an 8.42 ERA and a 1-3 record while allowing eight home runs in eight starts. Doggy Bones: Sosa snaps out of funk with four-hit night: RiverDogs center fielder Eduardo Sosa collected four base hits for the second time this season as Charleston banged out 12 hits in last night s loss. Sosa had been struggling of late, going 6-for-35 over his previous nine games. The 20-year old Venezuelan has 17 multi-hit games for the year, but had not gotten two or more hits since July 3 prior to his outburst. Despite reaching base four times out of the leadoff spot, Sosa did not score any of the RiverDogs six runs as the 2-7 batters in the order went just 4-for-26 versus Varner and two Grasshopper relievers. Top of Greensboro order sets the tone: It was a banner night for the 1-3 batters in the Grasshoppers lineup. Perio, Ozuna, and Yelich combined to go 10-for-15 with 5 and 6 runs scored as Allen failed to go at least 5.0 innings for the first time in four starts as a RiverDog. The rest of the lineup collected just three hits, but they made most of them as two were home runs by Black and Fisher, continuing to show why they have clubbed the third most homers in the circuit.
