Nurse s Notes I would like to remind everyone to be checking their children's heads for head lice and nits. The Iowa Department of Public Health has been putting out information to remind parents to check weekly. Take 15 minutes and check closely for live bugs and nits. Head lice are an equal opportunity offender, it does not discriminate based on gender, race, ethnicity or socioeconomic status. Hair is hair to this pesky little critter. According to the Iowa Department of Public Health, mature head lice are about the size of a sesame seed. They live in human hair and draw blood from the skin, often causing itching. Lice lay eggs (called nits) on hair shaft. Live nits are found less than a half-inch from the scalp and most often on the hair at the nape of the neck and behind the ears. The recommendation is parents check their children's hair for head lice or nits once a week. Lice spreads almost completely through human hair to hair contact, pets do not spread lice. Head lice is more common among elementary students. Please be aware after sleep overs and sporting events. Discourage sharing hats or caps, hair ties, brushes and combs. Each child should have their own comb or brush. If you have any questions about treatment the Iowa Department of Public Health has a brochure on their website or contact the school nurse. Wash your hands! The number one way to prevent illness is good hand washing. Wash hands with warm soapy water for 15-20 seconds. Wet hands, apply soap, scrub hands using lots of friction and then dry with a paper towel. Wash before and after food preparation, before eating food, after blowing or wiping your nose, sneezing or coughing, after using the toilet and after touching garbage. Hand gels or cleansers should only be used when running water and soap are not available. As we spend more time indoors and gather together with family and friends we are exposed to more germs. Washing our hands frequently, keeping hands away from our eyes, nose and mouth and covering our coughs and sneezes will reduce the risk of catching a nasty bug. Remember, germs are not for sharing.
