J/70 Grundig Sailing Cup 2018 Denmark Royal Danish Yacht Club & Horsens Sailing Club Horsens 21.-22. april 2018 SAILING INSTRUCTIONS 1 RULES 1.1 The regatta will be governed by the rules as defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing, except as changed by these sailing instructions. 1.2 The applying prescriptions of the Nordic Sailing Federation and the Danish Sailing Association national will apply. See attachment A 1.3 The GRUNDIG Sailing Cup (GSC) will be governed by the current versions of the International Class Rules for J/70, except as changed by the Sailing Instructions. 1.4 Racing rule(s) will be changed as described in the sailing instructions. 1.5 Under rule 87, rule(s) C3.2, C5.2(a7), C5.3 of the J70 class rules will not apply. Rule A9 and C10.3 of the J70 class rules are changed as follows: Registered Sail numbers at the regatta shall be identical with numbers in the sail used for racing in the regatta. 1.6 Other rules applying when racing: For the Grundig Sailing Cup there is a special rule about the use of the bowsprit due to safety reasons when racing. The bowsprit must be fully retracted into the hull, except when gennaker hoisted, is hoisted or taken down, and the bowsprit to be drawn in at the first reasonable opportunity after recovering the gennaker. When the gennaker is not set, the bowsprit is not counted as part of the boat or its equipment in relation to the rules on 1) to establish an overlap or 2) to be entitled to mark-room. 1.7 Participants should pay attention to specific class rules. See Attachment B. 1.7 If there is a conflict between languages the English text will take precedence.
2 NOTICES TO COMPETITORS Notices to competitors will be posted on the official notice board located at the clubhouse. 3 CHANGES TO SAILING INSTRUCTIONS Any change to the sailing instructions will be posted 1,5 hours before the first start on the day it will take effect, except that any change to the schedule of races will be posted by 2000 on the day before it will take effect. 4 SIGNALS MADE ASHORE 4.1 Signals made ashore will be displayed at the flag pole in front of the restaurant 4.2 When flag AP is displayed ashore, 1 minute is replaced with not less than 60 minutes in the race signal AP. This changes RRS race signal 4.3 When flag Y is displayed ashore, rule 40 applies at all times while afloat. This changes the Part 4 preamble. 5 SCHEDULE OF RACES 5.1 Dates of racing: Date First warning Saturday 1100 Sunday 1000 5.2 Number of races: Date Saturday 8 Sunday 7 Races per day 5.4 To alert boats that a race or sequence of races will begin soon, the orange starting line flag will be displayed with one sound at least five minutes before a warning signal is made. 5.5 On the last day of the regatta no warning signal will be made after 1500 hr. 6 CLASS FLAG Class flag will be flag Juliett (J) 7 RACING AREA Attachment C shows the location of racing area. 8 THE COURSE 8.1 The diagram in Attachment D show the course, including the approximate angles between legs, the order in which marks are to be passed, and the side on which each mark is to be left. The approximate course length will be 30 minutes. 8.2 No later than the warning signal, the race committee signal boat will display the approximate compass bearing of the first leg.
9 MARKS 9.1 Marks 1, 2S and 2P will be orange cylinders marked with white bands and sponsor advertising. 9.2 New mark 1, as provided in instruction 12.1, will be a red cylinder. 9.3 The starting line marks will be a buoy with an orange flag at port end and the Pricipal Committee Signal boat at the starboard. 9.4 The Finishing marks will be the Race Committee boat at the starboard end and a buoy with a blue flag at the port end. 10 AREAS THAT ARE OBSTRUCTIONS No obstructions in this event 11 THE START 11.1 Races will be started by using rule 26 with the warning signal made 5 minutes before the starting signal. 11.2 To alert boats that a race or sequence of races will begin soon, an orange flag will be displayed with one sound for at least five minutes before a warning signal is displayed. 11.3 The starting line will be between a staff displaying an orange flag on the Race Committee Signal Boat at the starboard end and a staff displaying an orange flag on a race committee boat at the port end. 11.4 A boat starting later than 4 minutes after her starting signal will be scored Did Not Start without a hearing. This changes RRS A4 and A5. 12 CHANGE OF THE NEXT LEG OF THE COURSE 12.1 To change the next leg of the course, the race committee will (a) lay a new mark, (b) move the finishing line, or (c) move the leeward gate. When a new mark is laid, the original mark will be removed as soon as practicable. When in a subsequent change a new mark is replaced, it will be replaced by an original mark. 12.2 Flag C together with repetitive sounds is a sufficient signal when changing the position of the new mark. This changes RRS 33 (a). 12.3 If necessary, in order to improve the angle or distance between the gate marks (2S/2P), the Race Committee can adjust these marks without signalling a change of course. 13.4 Except at a gate, boats shall pass between the race committee boat signalling the change of the next leg and the nearby mark, leaving the mark to port and the race committee boat to starboard. This change RRS 28.1. 13 THE FINISH The finishing line will be between a staff on a race committee boat displaying an orange flag mark and an orange flag on the race committee signal boat. 14 PENALTY SYSTEM Rule 44.1 is changed so that the Two-Turns Penalty is replaced by the One-Turn Penalty.
15 TIME LIMITS AND TARGET TIMES 15.1 Time limits and target times are as follows: Time limit Mark 1 Target first boat time limit time 60 minutes 20 minutes 30 minutes If no boat has passed Mark 1 within the Mark 1 time limit the race will be abandoned. Failure to meet the target time will not be grounds for redress. This changes RRS 62.1(a). 15.2 Boats failing to finish within 20 minutes after the first boat sails the course and finishes will be scored Did Not Finish without a hearing. This changes RRS 35, A4 and A5. 16 PROTESTS AND REQUESTS FOR REDRESS 16.1 Protest forms are available at the race office, located in the clubhouse. Protests and requests for redress or reopening shall be delivered there within the appropriate time limit. 16.2 The protest time limit is 60 minutes after the last boat has finished the last race of the day or the race committee signals no more racing today, whichever is later. The same protest time applies to all protests by the race committee and the jury and request for redress. This changes RRS 61.3 and 62.2. 16.3 Notices will be posted no later than 30 minutes after the protest time limit to inform competitors of hearings in which they are parties or named as witnesses. Hearings will be held in the protest room, located in the clubhouse next to the restaurant, beginning as soon as possible 16.4 Notices of protests by the race committee or protest committee will be posted to inform boats under RRS 61.1(b). 16.5 Breaches of instructions 18, 21, 23, 24, 25, 26 and 27 will not be grounds for a protest by a boat. This changes RRS 60.1(a). Penalties for these breaches may be less than disqualification if the protest committee so decides. 16.6 On the last scheduled day of racing a request for redress based on a protest committee decision shall be delivered no later than 30 minutes after the decision was posted. This changes RRS 62.2. 17 SCORING 17.1 One race in each regatta is required to be completed to constitute a series. 17.2 For each regatta: (a) (b) When fewer than 5 races have been completed, a boat s series score will be the total of her race scores. When 5 or more races have been completed, a boat s series score will be the total of her race scores excluding her worst score.
18 SAFETY REGULATIONS A boat that retires from a race shall notify the race committee as soon as possible. 19 CREW & REPLACEMENT OF CREW OR EQUIPMENT 19.1 The crew on board while racing shall be minimum 3 persons. The number of crew shall remain the same during a regatta, but may change between the regattas. The registered skipper shall sail all regattas in order for the boat to compete for the overall series result and prize (NB this is a change to NOR 3.4) 19.2 Substitution of competitors will not be allowed without prior written approval of the race committee. 19.2 Substitution of damaged or lost equipment will not be allowed unless authorized by the race committee. Requests for substitution shall be made to the committee at the first reasonable opportunity. 20 EQUIPMENT AND MEASUREMENT CHECKS A boat or equipment may be inspected at any time for compliance with the class rules and sailing instructions. On the water, a boat can be instructed by a race committee equipment inspector or measurer to proceed immediately to a designated area for inspection. 21 EVENT ADVERTISING Boats shall display event advertising supplied by the organizing authority as follows: Two Grundig stickers will be delivered to each participant and shall be placed on each side of the ruf-taget during the sailing. Boats which also intend to participate in the next GSC events in Rungsted and/or Skovshoved - please let them stay attached. 22 OFFICIAL BOATS Official boats will normally display Royal Danish Yacht Club flag or Horsens Sailing Club flag. 23 SUPPORT BOATS 23.1 Team leaders, coaches and other support personnel shall stay 50 meters outside areas where boats are racing from the time of the preparatory signal for the first class to start until all boats have finished or retired or the race committee signals a postponement, general recall or abandonment. 23.2 Support boats shall be marked with coach. 24 TRASH DISPOSAL Trash shall be brought ashore, or may be placed aboard support or official boats. 25 HAUL-OUT RESTRICTIONS Keelboats shall not be hauled out during the regatta except with and according to the terms of prior written permission of the race committee.
26 DIVING EQUIPMENT AND PLASTIC POOLS Underwater breathing apparatus and plastic pools or their equivalent shall not be used around keelboats between the preparatory signal of the first race and the end of the regatta. 27 RADIO COMMUNICATION Except in an emergency, a boat shall neither make radio transmissions while racing nor receive radio communications not available to all boats. This restriction also applies to mobile telephones. 28 PRIZES Prizes will be given as follows: For each regatta: Prizes will be awarded to the best three boats. Prize giving will take place soonest possible after the races on Sunday. At the regatta in Skovshoved there will be a prize for the overall winner of the J70 GCS event. 29 DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY Competitors participate in the regatta entirely at their own risk. See rule 4, Decision to Race. The organizing authority will not accept any liability for material damage or personal injury or death sustained in conjunction with or prior to, during, or after the regatta. 30 INSURANCE Each participating boat shall be insured with valid third-party liability insurance with a minimum cover of 2.000.000 EURO per incident or the equivalent. ATTACHMENT A Prescription of the Danish Sailing Association national to RRS 1.2: Danish legislation requires every boat to be equipped with personal buoyancy for the number of persons on board at any time. Prescription of the Nordic Sailing Federation to RRS30: When RRS 30.2 or 30.3 apply, the base of the triangle mentioned in these rules shall be the starting line and the extension of the starting line to the starting vessel.
ATTACHMENT B Participants in the Grundig Sailing Cup should especially pay attention to the following Class Rules, when racing: C.1.1(b) RRS 42.3(c) is modified to read: Except on a boat to windward, when surfing (rapidly accelerating down the front of a wave) or planning is possible, the boat s crew may pull in any sail in order to initiate surfing or planning. The main and jib may be pulled in only once for each wave or gust of wind, but the gennaker sheet may be played without restriction. C.3.3 CREW POSITIONING (a) Except for momentary sail handling and/or repair needs, crew shall remain aft of the mast while on deck. (b) Crew shall not stand or lean out over the cockpit safety lines or stern rails to promote roll tacking, roll gybing or to increase hiking leverage, or for any other reason, other than temporary needs to make repairs or correct problems. (c) Not more than two crew may have their legs outboard of the sheerline. (d) When tacking or gybing, crew shall not hang, push or pull on the shrouds, mast, cockpit safety lines, stanchions or any other item to promote the maneuver. (e) Except for a medical emergency or momentary sail handling and/or repair needs, crew heads and shoulders shall remain above deck.
