New Name, Same Goals: The ULM football team might be sporting a new mascot the Warhawks, but the goals are still the same Win Belt, Win Bowl. The Warhawks took the first step towards reaching those goals on Aug. 31 with the 24-6 win against Alcorn State in front of a crowd of 18,106 at Malone Stadium. ULM came close to realizing those goals last season by winning the 2005 Sun Belt Conference title. A season finale loss to Louisiana-Lafayette kept the Warhawks from the second part of the goal a trip to the New Orleans Bowl in Lafayette, La. Weatherbie agreed in principal to a threeyear contract extension on Aug. 28, 2006. The agreement will be through the 2009 season and is pending approval by the ULM Athletic Foundation Board of Directors and the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors. Under his direction, the Warhawk football program earned its first conference title since 1992 with a 5-2 finish in Sun Belt play last season. ULM has made significant strides in a short amount of time improving from 1-11 to 5-6 in just a year. Then maintaining a second 5-6 season to win the league title. Weatherbie, ULM s 13th head coach, took over the program a little less than three months before kicking off the 2003 season. The 2004 Lancaster named Sun Belt and Louisiana Player of the Week Q u a r t e r b a c k K i n s m o n L a n - caster has been named the Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week and Louisiana Sportswriters Association Offensive Player of the Week for his performance on Saturday, Sept. 9 against Kansas. Lancaster had a career-high 377 yards passing, tying for 15th on the ULM all-time single game passing list with Stan Humphries (vs. Louisiana Tech in 1987). Lancaster was 24 of 41 and found tight end Zeek Zacharie twice to get the Warhawks in the endzone. The second TD throw pulled ULM to within two of the Jayhawks with 3:31 left in the game, 21-19. Lancaster also rushed for 30 yards, including a nine-yard touchdown run to cut KU s lead to 21-13 with 1:18 left in the third quarter. Warhawks won five of their last seven games, including four wins in Sun Belt Conference play. ULM s 4-3 Sun Belt record put Weatherbie s squad in a tie for third place. page 2 2006 ULM Game Notes at Alabama, Sept. 16 for the third season in a row. He has a 12-29 record at ULM, 57-88 overall with head coaching stops at Utah State and Navy. Weatherbie took USU and Navy to bowl games in his second season with each program. Last Game Out for the Warhawks: ULM came very close to picking up its first win against a Big XII opponent since moving to NCAA Division I-A in 1994. The Warhawks (1-1) came up short against Kansas tonight, 21-19. We had so many opportunities tonight, said ULM head coach Charlie Weatherbie. You hate to get that close and come up short. The Warhawks got on the scoreboard in the first quarter when Kinsmon Lancaster connected with tight end Zeek Zacharie for a 59-yard touchdown. It was Zacharie s first collegiate touchdown. Ragan Walters added the extra point to even the score, 7-7. Kansas had scored three drives earlier on an 11-yard pass from Kerry Meier to Dexton Fields. Scott Webb scored the point after attempt. The Jayhawks took the lead with 1:02 left in the second quarter when Meier connected with Marcus Henry on a 4-yard pass and Webb added the kick, 14-7. Kansas added to the lead at 9:23 in the third quarter, 21-7, on a Meier 10-yard run with a Webb PAT. ULM responded three drives later with a long drive for a touchdown. Lancaster connected with receiver Joe Merritt for a 55-yard reception to set up first and goal at the four-yard line. After Calvin Dawson was tackled for a loss and a Warhawks timeout, Lancaster ran the ball in from nine yards out to pull ULM with in eight, 21-13, with 1:18 left in the third quarter. Walters missed the extra point. ULM pulled to within two, 21-19, with 3:31 left in the game when Zacharie recorded his second touchdown of the game on a three-yard pass from Lancaster. The Warhawks attempted the two-point conversion but the pass from Lancaster was incomplete. We improved in our execution this week and didn t have any turnovers, said Weatherbie. We have to continue to find ways to make big plays. ULM returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 16, at Alabama. Kickoff at Bryant-Denny Stadium is set for 6:07 p.m. The game is available on ESPN Game Plan. Lancaster Putting up the Yards: Kinsmon Lancaster s 407 yards of total offense against Kansas was the second-highest output in Bowl Subdivision play this season. Alabama Head Coach Mike Shula: Mike Shula (Alabama, 1987; 22-17,.564), is in his fourth season at the helm of the Crimson Tide program. Shula, the Crimson Tide quarterback from 1984-87, returned to his alma mater in 2003. He resurrected the tradition-laden program back into the top 25. Shula was named the 2005 Regional Coach of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association, following a 10-2 season with a 13-10 win over Texas Tech in the 2006 AT&T Cotton Bowl. The Crimson Tide was ranked as high as third nationally during the season. Before returning to his alma mater, Shula spent several seasons coaching in the NFL - Miami, Chicago, and Tampa Bay. Last Game Out for Alabama: Alabama forced four Vanderbilt turnovers, including an interception as time expired, en route to a 13-10 win Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium. For the second consecutive week, it was up to the Alabama defense to hold late to preserve a lead, and for the second straight week, it responded. Senior Juwan Simpson intercepted a Chris Nickson pass at the Alabama 25-yard line as time expired to preserve the win, Alabama s first conference victory of 2006. Well we had another win. We are 2-0, Alabama Head Coach Mike Shula said. We look at the positives from it. We were down 10-3 at the half and we had to find out about our football team, our young football team. They responded right away. Junior Simeon Castille recorded his fifth and sixth career interceptions on the day, picking off passes from Nickson in the second and fourth quarters. Castille s second pick happened with just under 13 minutes left in the game, giving Alabama the ball at its own 21-yard line. The Tide then drove 49 yards in 12 plays, capped by a careerlong 47-yard field goal from freshman Leigh Tiffin to give Alabama the 13-10 lead with 7:34 left in the game. A 36-yard completion from sophomore John Parker Wilson to sophomore Nikita Stover kept the drive going on third-and-18. Wilson was 18-of-29 on the day for 207 yards with a touchdown and interception. Brown led the Alabama receiving corps with eight catches for 99 yards. DJ Hall had four catches for 56 yards and a touchdown. It was great to see DJ Hall back on the field after missing two games, Shula said. I think it gives the quarterback more confidence to have two go-to guys on the field. John Parker is doing pretty well. He made some tough plays. Alabama opened the second half with a seven-play, 81-yard touchdown drive capped by a 31-yard Wilson touchdown pass to Hall. Tiffin s extra point knotted the score at 10-10 with 11:23 left in the third quarter. Wilson was 5-for-5 for 73 yards on the drive. Though Alabama recorded four turnovers on the day, it also turned the ball over three times, each in Vanderbilt territory. The Commodores took a 10-3 lead to the locker room at the half, with all 10 points coming on Alabama turnovers. An interception earlier in the second quarter set up a six-play, 29-yard drive for the Commodores that culminated with a 42-yard Bryan Hahnfeldt kick to pull Vanderbilt even at 3-3. Alabama got on the board first with a 37-yard Tiffin field goal with 53 seconds left in the first quarter to take a 3-0 lead. The Tide was led on the ground by senior Ken Darby, who carried the ball 21 times for 65 yards, with sophomore Jimmy Johns adding 37 yards and Castille with 19. 2006 Alabama Schedule Date Opponent Time (CST)/Result Sept. 2 Hawaii W, 25-17 Sept. 9 *Vanderbilt W, 13-10 Sept. 16 ULM 6:07 p.m. Sept. 23 *at Arkansas TBA Sept. 30 *at Florida TBA Oct. 7 Duke TBA Oct. 14 *Mississippi TBA Oct. 21 *at Tennessee TBA Oct. 28 Florida International (HC) TBA Nov. 4 *Mississippi State TBA Nov. 11 *at LSU TBA Nov. 18 *Auburn TBA * = Southeastern Conference game First Starts: Senior running back Erroll Hogan and redshirt freshman defensive end Jameson Jordan made their first starts of their careers on Saturday against Kansas. The Warhawks went from four turnovers in Game One against Alcorn State to none against Kansas a week later. Dawson is also second in the league in all-purpose running with 123.5 yards per game on carries, receptions and kickoff returns. He is also fourth in rushing with 58 yards per game. Others Making Their Mark: Several Warhawks are making their presence known on the Sun Belt stats charts. Darrell McNeal is fourth in the league in punt returns with 7.0 yards per return. LaGregory Sapp, Zeek Zacharie and Joe Merritt are all ranked in the top 12 in the Sun Belt in receptions per game and top 10 in receiving yards per game. Zacharie is currently tied for third in the league in scoring with 6.0 points per game. Josh Thompson is second in the league in forced fumbles with two. Going for Six: In its 2006 journey to Win Belt, Win Bowl, the Warhawks hope to crack the five-win plateau for the first time since moving to I-A in 1994. ULM has reached the five-win mark six times since 1994, including back-to-back 5-6 seasons in 2004 and 2005: 1996-5-6 (Head Coach Ed Zaunbrecher) 1997-5-7 (Head Coach Ed Zaunbrecher) 1998-5-6 (Head Coach Ed Zaunbrecher) 1999-5-6 (Head Coach Bobby Keasler) 2004-5-6 (Head Coach Charlie Weatherbie) 2005-5-6 (Head Coach Charlie Weatherbie) The One and Only: After two seasons of wearing jersey No. 24, senior cornerback Chaz Williams will be wearing jersey No. 1 in 2006. Williams, a senior, finished the 2005 season ranked fifth in the nation in interceptions with.50 per game. He is the top returning player in the country in the category. Williams has six career interceptions in 22 games for ULM. Putting In A Good Day s Work: Five Warhawks impressed the coaching staff so much during spring practice and preseason camp that they were awarded scholarships Gary Frazier, Justin Waller, Joe Handy, Josh Thomas, and Victor Gaines. Frazier is a sophomore running back out of John Ehret High School in Harvey, La. Waller is a redshirt freshman tight end from Denham Springs, La. Handy is a sophomore deep snapper from Sterlington, La. Thomas is a freshman linebacker from Port Barre, La. Gaines is a sophomore defensive lineman out of Clements High School in Sugar Land, Texas. Where Are They Now?: Three players from the 2005 Sun Belt Conference championship team moved on to professional football careers over the summer. All-Sun Belt punter Joel Stelly signed a free agent contract with the Chicago Bears and was released by the team last week. All-Sun Belt defensive end Brandon Guillory also signed a free agent contract with the Kansas City Chiefs, but was also released last week. Sun Belt Player of the Year Steven Jyles signed with the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League in March. He is currently listed third on the depth chart at quarterback. Seen At Practice: With the success of Stelly, Guillory and Jyles making the professional ranks, along with the long list of former ULM players performing well at the next level, there has been a steady stream of professional scouts coming through Malone Stadium in the past month. Alonzo Highsmith of the Green Bay Packers was the first to come to campus on Aug. 15. The most in one day has been five a week later San Francisco 49ers, New England Patriots, Dallas Cowboys, Baltimore Ravens, and St. Louis Rams. Blast from the Past: Former ULM quarterback John Holman, currently living in Mobile, Ala., and his family dropped by practice on Aug. 4. Holman reminisced with assistant trainer Robert Williamson and equipment manager David Cox and visited with Charlie Weatherbie for a bit during practice. Holman, who saw many of his ULM career records beaten by Steven Jyles last season, played by the bayou from 1979-82. He still holds the single season record for pass attempts with 461 in 1982. Injury Report for Alabama game: Just bumps and bruises; Joseph Joseph, Tay Ogletree, Chavous McWhorter, and Cecil Pollock are all back on the practice field. 2006 Game Captains: Alcorn State - Kevin Payne, Chaz Williams, Kinsmon Lancaster, Cody Bauman Kansas - Kevin Payne, Kinsmon Lancaster, Cody Bauman, Quintez Secka Hammer Award: Given to the Warhawk who made the biggest hit in the game. Alcorn State - Austin Willis, Sr., S, Conroe, Texas Kansas - Ben Murphy, Jr., LB, Shreveport, La.; Adam Hill, Jr., C, Arlington, Texas 30 and still going strong: 2006 marks the 30th season that play-by-play announcer Dr. Frank Hoffman has served as the voice of ULM football. Hoffman is joined by his color partner of 22 years, Lou St. Amant. Bruce Hanks roams the sidelines for the third season. Media Information Practices: All ULM practices are open to the media. page 8 2006 ULM Game-by-Game Summaries Game #1 ULM 24, Alcorn State 6 Aug. 31, 2006 Malone Stadium Monroe, La. MONROE, La. -- ULM soared to their first victory as the Warhawks, 24-6 over Alcorn State at Malone Stadium Thursday night before a crowd of 18,106. Quarterback Kinsmon Lancaster led the way with his first 100-yard passing game and accounting for two touchdowns. The game was a roller coaster, up and down struggle for the Warhawks in the beginning. After recovering from some offensive miscues and posting a defensive effort that forced five turnovers, the Warhawks picked up the victory by scoring 14 points in the second half. After a delay of game penalty against ULM on the opening kickoff, the Warhawk s fortunes quickly changed. On Alcorn State s first play from scrimmage, a shovel pass from Tony Hobson, Jr. to Nate Hughes, the ball was jolted loose by the Warhawk defense and Josh Alexander gave ULM its initial red zone possession of the 2006 season. It took the Warhawks just five plays and 2:28 minutes before Lancaster scored from 1-yard out to give ULM a 7-0 advantage. After ASU drove deep into Warhawk territory on its next possession, the ULM defense flexed its turnover forcing strength once again with its second fumble recover of the night. After a Hobson pass completion to Charlie Spiller, Chaz Williams recovered the fumble in the shadow of his team s goal post to give the Warhawks the ball on their own 1-yard line. ULM could not convert the turnover to points on the scoreboard after Corey McLaurin gave Lancaster his first interception of the season. McLaurin recorded two interceptions in the game against Lancaster. Alcorn capitalized on the miscue with a Jonathan Williams field goal from 25 yards out to cut into the ULM lead, 7-3. ULM then closed the first half scoring with a field goal of its own. Reagan Walters was accurate from 24-yards and ULM went to the locker room leading 10-3. Lancaster, in is first collegiate start under center, completed 8-of-17 pass attempts for 100 yards and one touchdown to offset two interceptions. Lancaster was also lethal on the ground carrying 18 times for 82 yards and one touchdown. Running back Calvin Dawson lead ULM in rushing with 78 yards on 17 carries. I was proud of the way the guys persevered, said head coach Charlie Weatherbie. We will improve a lot between this week and the next game. Leading 10-6 in the fourth quarter, Lancaster found Darrell McNeal in the back of the end zone for an 18-yard touchdown to seal the deal for the Warhawks. Zeek Zacharie led all Warhawk receivers with three grabs for 40 yards. ULM out-gained ASU 310-205 yards in total offense, including 179 yards on the ground compared to 40 for Alcorn State. ASU out-gained ULM threw the air with 165 yards on 17 completions to ULM s 131 yards and 11 completions. Kevin Payne played four positions in the game including punter, punt returner, safety and he also returned kickoffs. Payne finished with a 42.2 per punt average on four attempts. He put one punt inside the ASU 20-yard line and had a career high 60-yard boot in the second quarter. The Warhawks return to the gridiron on Sept. 9 when the team heads to Lawrence, Kan. to face the Jayhawks. The first-ever meeting between the two schools is set for 6 p.m. at Memorial Stadium. G a m e N o t e s : D B James Wright recorded his first interception and retuned it for a touchdown in the fourth quarter... ULM quarterback Kinsmon Lancaster not only tossed is first touchdown of his ULM career, but also broke the 100-yard mark through the air against Alcorn State. page 9 2006 ULM Game-by-Game Summaries Game #2 Kansas 21, ULM 19 Sept. 9, 2006 Memorial Stadium Lawrence, Kan. LAWRENCE, Kan. --- The ULM football team came very close to picking up its first win against a Big XII opponent since moving to NCAA Division I-A in 1994. Game Notes: Sophomore tight end Zeek Zacharie caught his first collegiate touchdown with 2:02 left in the first quarter, a 59-yard pass from Kinsmon Lancaster. He collected his second one with 3:31 left in the game... Lancaster finished the game with 377 yards passing. That ranks him tied for 15th on the ULM single game passing list (377, Stan Humphries vs. Louisiana Tech, 1987). It was his second consecutive 100+ yard passing game in his second start and his first 300+ yard passing game...sophomore safety Josh Thompson collected his first interception of the season in the second quarter, the third of his career...juniors Kyle Cunningham and Adam Hill made their 24th consecutive starts on offensive line...senior safety Kevin Payne recorded his second interception of the season, picking off Meier in the endzone to end the first half.
