. RACING RULES Massapoag Yacht Club 05 Regatta Sailing Instructions.. The regatta will be governed by the rules as defined in the current Racing Rules of Sailing.. Rules 77 and 78 are not applicable... Class rules, which prohibit substitution of crews except in case of emergency, are altered to permit crew substitution for any reason with written notification to the race committee... Sunfish and Laser class rules are altered to allow unofficial sail numbers. For Lasers, Non class legal sails may be permitted with the approval of the PRO - Intensity Laser sails are permitted.. ELIGIBILITY.. Competitors must have submitted a completed registration form and paid the registration fee prior to the first race... Competitors must notify the Race Committee of his/her intent to race before the START of the first race on each day of the regatta.. Any boat may sail in the Handicap Fleet. All boats that declare Handicap fleet must fly a colored ribbon from the luff of the main sail or more above the boom.. NOTICES TO COMPETITORS.. Official notices will be posted on the Bulletin Board on the beach at the Massapoag Yacht Club. It is the responsibility of each yacht to check the board for information.. CHANGES IN SAILING INSTRUCTIONS.. Any change to the sailing instructions will be posted before 0900 hours on the day it will take effect or will be discussed at the skippers meeting. 5. SIGNALS MADE ASHORE 5.. Signals made ashore will be displayed at the flagstaff on the beach at the Massapoag Yacht Club. 5.. Flag AP with two horns (one horn when lowered) means The race is postponed. The warning signal will be made not less than 5 minutes after AP is lowered. 6. RACE SCHEDULE 6.. 6.. Lunches may be staggered as fleets finish 6.. No warning signal may be made after 6:00 on Saturday or after :00 on Sunday 6.. The race committee has the option of modifying this schedule based on weather conditions. 7. RACING AREA 7.. The ledge area (bounded by four HITE R marks) is an obstruction. The taut string, as described in Rule 8. must lie outside all these marks. 7.. Fletcher s Cove is an obstruction. The taut string, as described in Rule 8. must lie outside (to the East) of the white R mark. 8. THE COURSE 8.. The diagrams in the Appendix A illustrate the courses, including the order in which marks are to be passed. Additional course information will be displayed on the rack of the Race Committee Boat. It is the intention of the Race Committee to start all races in the direction of the windward mark, the first mark of the course. 8.. The Race Committee has the option of using the following variations on the courses shown in Appendix A. The relative positions of the start and finish lines and all marks in the above diagrams are approximate. and lines may be located at the windward or leeward marks. The start/finish configurations shown in the diagrams may be simplified to a single start/finish line. The race committee will verbally notify the racers of this change. The offset mark in a windward leeward course may be omitted. The race committee will verbally notify the racers of this change. The race committee has the option of setting a shorter windward leg for any class(es). This course will not have an offset mark. The race committee will verbally notify any fleet that will be using the shorter course, and will describe to them the mark that will be used. The race committee may substitute a leeward gate for a leeward mark. The race committee will verbally notify the racers of this change. 8. The identifying letter of the chosen course will be displayed on the Race Committee Boat before or with the warning signal. For courses, A, and B a number will be displayed indicating the number of legs to be sailed. Courses with even numbers have downwind finishes and courses with odd numbers have upwind finishes. 8. All marks are to be left to PORT, except in the case of leeward gates, which are rounded inside to outside. 8.5 hen the start/finish line is in the middle of the course, it shall be open (i.e. boats may pass through it while racing). 9. MARKS Marks,,, and will usually be ORANGE colored tomatoes. If a shorter windward leg is set for a different class, its mark will be a YELLO ball. 9.. The starting mark will be either a starting pin with an ORANGE flag or an ORANGE tomato. 9.. The finishing mark will be the starting pin with an ORANGE flag, an ORANGE tomato, or a finish pin with a BLUE flag. 9.. A HITE Ball will be used as an Offset mark on a Course. 0. . THE START.. Races will be started using RRS Appendix S. The table below lists the sound and timing sequence... Times shall be taken from the sound signals... The starting line will be between a staff displaying an ORANGE flag on the Committee Boat and a nearby mark or pin... Boats whose warning signal has not been made shall keep clear of the starting area and of all boats whose warning signal has been made..5. A boat starting later than 0 minutes after her starting signal will be scored Did Not. CHANGE OF COURSE AFTER THE START.. A change of course after the start will be signaled from the RC boat or a Mark Boat before the leading boat has begun the leg, although the new mark may not then be in position... Any mark to be rounded after rounding the new mark may be relocated without further signaling to maintain the original course configuration.. If the windward mark is moved there is no subsequent requirement to round the offset mark.. THE FINISH.. hen the start and finish lines are on opposite sides of the Committee Boat, the finish shall be between a BLUE flag on the Committee Boat and a nearby pin with a BLUE flag... In all other cases, the finish line will be between a staff displaying an ORANGE flag on the Committee Boat or Line Boat and a nearby mark or pin.. TIME LIMIT.. The time limit from the ing Signal to the for the first boat will be one and one half (½) hours for each class. A boat that did not finish within 0 minutes after the first boat finishes or within the time limit (whichever is later), shall be scored points for the finishing place one more than the number of boats registered in the class.

5. PROTESTS 5.. All competitors are required to notify the committee boat at the finish of the intent to protest and the sail number of the boat to be protested. 5.. ritten Protests shall be submitted to the Race Committee not later than 0 minutes after the Race Committee Boat arrives at the dock following the last race of the day. 5.. A list of the yachts protesting and protested will be posted on the bulletin board and the competitors or their representatives must remain available for a hearing to be held as soon as possible. 5.. Safety equipment specified by class rules and current applicable U.S.C.G. and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Registry of Motor Vehicles, Marine Division regulations for each boat category must be carried by all competing yachts. 7..
