The Beach will take on the Flyers of Lewis on Friday, January 12 at 5 p.m. (PT) at Neil Carey Arena, before going up against the Ramblers on Saturday, January 13 at 5:30 p.m. (PT). The match at Loyola will be televised on ESPN3. ABOUT THE BEACH kicked off the first week of the 2018 season with a 4-0 record after defeating McKendree (3-0), Princeton (3-0), NJIT (3-1), and Saint Francis (Pa.) (3-0). The Beach competed at the UCSB ASICS Tournament last week in which they went 3-0 and juniors TJ DeFalco and Josh Tuaniga were named to the All-Tournament Team. Following the first week of the season, freshman middle blocker Simon Anderson was named Big West Freshman Player of the Week for his impressive performance in his first week as a collegiate student-athlete. He finished the week with 26 kills and 11 blocks, while hitting.500 (26-5-42). Junior setter Josh Tuaniga has racked up a total of 2,617 career assists to rank him eighth all-time at Long Beach State. Tuaniga is just three helpers away from moving into seventh place. Junior TJ DeFalco has accumulated 972 kills over his LBSU career. He is just 28 kills away from becoming just the 21st player in program history to break the 1,000 kill milestone. After a strong first week of the season, LBSU is led by TJ DeFalco s 3.31 kills per set and 1.85 digs per set. Josh Tuaniga leads the team with 10.42 assists per set, while Kyle Ensing and Simon Anderson are tied for the team lead in blocks per set (0.85). IN THE RANKINGS is currently ranked No. 2 in the country only behind reigning National Champion, Ohio State. The Beach were favored to win the Big West Conference in its inaugural season. The Beach s opponents this week, Lewis and Loyola Chicago, are both ranked in the top 15. Lewis comes in at No. 11 after having opened the year with an 0-2 record, while Loyola moved up to No. 7 after going 1-1 last week. This season, LBSU will take on eight of the 15 nationally ranked teams as the Beach face a very competitive schedule.

For their efforts, the duo was named to the All-Tournament Team. DeFalco led (4-0) with 14 kills as he hit an impressive.765 after committing just one attack error in the match. He also added five digs, two service aces and one block assist. While DeFalco led the offensive attack, Tuaniga set the tone as he dished out 23 assists in just two sets of action. Tuaniga then made way for freshman setter Carlos Rivera to pace the offense. Rivera then notched nine assists in his performance. Defensively, Jordan Molina led the Beach in the back row with six digs, while Davis Cannon was solid at the net as he recorded three blocks (one solo blocks and two block assists). The Beach dominated the Red Flash (2-2) offensively as they hit.542 (38-6-59), while forcing Saint Francis (Pa.) to break even on their offensive attack with a.000 hitting percentage (21-21-67). led Saint Francis (Pa.) for the first two sets, not allowing the Red Flash to take a lead or even tie the game until the third set. LBSU opened the first set on a 4-0 run with Tuaniga at the service line and the Beach held the lead for the remainder of the game. Long Beach State extended its lead up to 11 (22-11) before eventually cruising to a 25-17 victory. The second set was much like the first as the Beach took a 4-1 lead which was highlighted by an ace off the hands of DeFalco. From there, held the lead the rest of the way. Despite the Red Flash s efforts, they were unable to come any closer than within three points. The Beach hit.464 in the frame and held the Red Flash to a.136 attack percentage as LBSU went on to win, 25-22. In the third and final set, Saint Francis (Pa.) managed to start the game off taking a 3-2 advantage, marking their first lead of the match. The two teams traded points battling through four ties and three lead changes before went on a 7-0 run highlighted by back-to-back kills by DeFalco to take an 11-4 lead. The Beach would extend that lead to as many as 12 before winning the set 25-13. SCOUTING THE FLYERS No. 11 Lewis opened the 2018 season with a pair of losses to No. 7 UC Irvine (3-0) and No. 3 BYU (3-1) last week. The Flyers are looking to get back on the winning track in their home opener against No. 2 Long Beach State. Ryan Coenen is the team s leading attacker with 24 kills for a 3.43 kills per set average. Behind Coenen is Kyle Bugee who is averaging 2.57 kills per set. Bugee is also the team s leader in digs with eight for an average of 1.14 per set. The Flyers rotate two setters in Ryan Van Loo and Matt Yoshimoto. Van Loo has dished out 38 assists (6.33 per set), while Yoshimoto has registered 19 (3.17 per set). At the net, Lewis is led by Tyler Mitchem who has posted five blocks for an average of 0.71 per set. SERIES VS. LEWIS and Lewis will meet on Friday for just the seventh time in program history. The Beach leads the all-time series 4-2. The contest marks the first match between the two teams since 2016 when LBSU defeated Lewis, 3-1. The Ramblers kicked off the 2018 season defeating No. 3 BYU, 3-2, in Provo, Utah, but then dropped a 3-1 decision to No. 7 UC Irvine. The Ramblers own a.276 attack percentage and are averaging 12.22 kills per set on 11.00 assists per set. At the net, Loyola has been solid in its first two outings posting 2.39 blocks per set. Collin Mahan is the team s leading attacker as he averages 3.00 kills per set to go along with 1.67 digs per set. Garrett Zolg has paced the Ramblers defense with 9.56 assists per set as the team s setter. He has also been on point in the back row leading the squad in digs with 2.89 per set. At the net, Jeff Jendryk has been solid putting up 10 blocks (one solo, nine block assists) for an average of 1.11 per set. SERIES VS. Saturday s contest marks the first time the two teams will face off in Chicago, Ill. 1,000 KILL WATCH Junior TJ DeFalco has accumulated 972 kills over his LBSU career. He is just 28 kills away from becoming just the 21st player in program history to break the 1,000 kill milestone. DeFalco is averaging 3.31 kills per set this season and has averaged 4.12 kills per set over his collegiate career. HELPING HIMSELF TO THE TOP 10 Junior setter Josh Tuaniga continues to set the pace for this season as he has now accumulated 2,617 career assists which ranks him eighth all-time at LBSU. He is just four helpers away from taking seventh place. In the first four matches of the season, Tuaniga has dished out 125 assists to average 10.42 per set. Over his career, Tuaniga has averaged 11.09 assists per set. ALL-TOURNAMENT HONORS During the first week of the season, took part in the UC Santa Barbara ASICS Tournament where the Beach went 3-0 with victories over Princeton (3-0), NJIT (3-1), and Saint Francis (Pa.) (3-0). At the tournament, LBSU received a pair of solid efforts by TJ DeFalco and Josh Tuaniga which led to the duo being named to the All-Tournament Team. DeFalco finished the tournament with 34 kills (3.40 per set) and 19 digs (1.90 per set), while Tuaniga paced Long Beach State with 94 assists for a 10.44 set average as the Beach hit.448 at the UCSB ASICS Tournament. BWC PLAYER OF THE WEEK Simon Anderson was named the first Big West Men s Volleyball Freshman Player of the Week after helping No. 2 Long Beach State to a 4-0 start to the 2018 season. Anderson made his collegiate debut tallying six kills and four blocks while hitting.545 (6-0-11) against McKendree last Wednesday. He went on to knock down seven kills and post a pair of blocks versus Princeton to open the UCSB ASICS Tournament. Anderson continued his solid performances with seven kills and three blocks against NJIT, before closing out the tournament against Saint Francis (Pa.) with six kills and two blocks. He would hit.484 (20-5-31) during the tournament. The Middlefart, Denmark native finished the week with 26 kills and 11 blocks to average 2.00 kills and 0.85 blocks per set. PRESEASON ALL-AMERICANS Off the Block named the junior trio of TJ DeFalco, Kyle Ensing, and Josh Tuaniga to its Preseason All-American list prior to the start of the season. COACH OF THE YEAR, TIMES TWO Head Coach Alan Knipe was named 2017 MPSF Coach of the Year and AVCA Coach of the Year. Knipe earned the honors for the second time in his career after leading the Beach to a 27-4 overall record, marking the most wins for the program since 2004. PAGE 8 @LBSU_mvb ALAN KNIPE Head Coach 15th Year Alan Knipe enters his 14th season at the helm of the men s volleyball program after having led the 49ers to three NCAA Final Fours, one Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) regular season title, 12 MPSF Tournament appearances, including four trips to the championship match, and three NCAA Championship appearances. Knipe and the 49ers are coming off a season in which he guided the Beach to their 17th 20-win season as the squad made its Season eighth NCAA semifinal appearance and first since 2008. With a 25-8 overall record, posted its most wins since going 28-7 2001 in 2004 and tallied the fifth-most victories in program history.
