MOANA CLUBBING TOGETHER Greetings to all members, A very happy New Year to all and a wish that this second half of the season will be one filled with success, enjoyment and satisfaction for all. PATROLS For the first year, SLSSA is trialling a standby patrol on each weekend morning from 9am through to 12pm at Moana. These arrangements will commence on January 1 st and will continue through the month of January. This means that there will be patrols in place at Moana from 9am through to 6pm on each day of the weekends. The extension of these hours is designed to cover potential emergencies, which can typically occur in the mornings of the school holiday period. Thank you to Neil Wilson and Harriet Whiley for their planning of this trial patrol period. VISIT FROM TERRY HILDER January 2017 On Sunday, 18 th December, the club had a visit from one of our pioneers in Terry Hilder. Terry patrolled in the 50s and still has fond memories of those beginning years at Moana. Sadly, Terry is suffering from the effects of Parkinson Disease and has minimal verbal communication skills, but his face lit up when we spoke about his pioneering colleagues at the club and he willingly gave a strong thumbs up of approval for most of what we spoke about. Terry was also a very successful League footballer with South Adelaide and a champion golfer at Thaxted Park in addition to being a committed lifesaver at Moana. I have included some photos, courtesy of Karen Evans of Terry s visit to the club, who was accompanied by his wife and grandson. DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARD The club currently encourages our junior members to take advantage of the opportunities presented by the Duke of Edinburgh Award. While not a SLSA activity, the award and the activities undertaken, develop in our young outstanding qualities that provide a platform for personal development, which translate perfectly to the skills required by successful lifesavers. A recent excursion was organised by Gold Duke of Edinburgh participants Toby Phillips and Joseph Butterworth. The following Moana youth members completed their requirements for their Bronze award under very challenging conditions: we congratulate Bronwyn Mullany, Ellie Hargreaves, Lachlan Campbell and Nicola Lieff. The group kayaked down the river Murray from Berri to Lake Bonney in mid-december, camping on most nights and carrying their food, cooking equipment and tents. They also paddled for over eight gruelling hours each day. Well done to all and to Angie Phillips, who oversaw the excursion.
HARVEST FESTIVAL Once again, Moana SLSC has been invited to be part of the working party of the Harvest Festival, an annual event conducted at McLaren Vale Oval.
