MOANA CLUBBING TOGETHER Greetings to all members, A very happy New Year to all and a wish that this second half of the season will be one filled with success, enjoyment and satisfaction for all. PATROLS For the first year, SLSSA is trialling a standby patrol on each weekend morning from 9am through to 12pm at Moana. These arrangements will commence on January 1 st and will continue through the month of January. This means that there will be patrols in place at Moana from 9am through to 6pm on each day of the weekends. The extension of these hours is designed to cover potential emergencies, which can typically occur in the mornings of the school holiday period. Thank you to Neil Wilson and Harriet Whiley for their planning of this trial patrol period. VISIT FROM TERRY HILDER January 2017 On Sunday, 18 th December, the club had a visit from one of our pioneers in Terry Hilder. Terry patrolled in the 50s and still has fond memories of those beginning years at Moana. Sadly, Terry is suffering from the effects of Parkinson Disease and has minimal verbal communication skills, but his face lit up when we spoke about his pioneering colleagues at the club and he willingly gave a strong thumbs up of approval for most of what we spoke about. Terry was also a very successful League footballer with South Adelaide and a champion golfer at Thaxted Park in addition to being a committed lifesaver at Moana. I have included some photos, courtesy of Karen Evans of Terry s visit to the club, who was accompanied by his wife and grandson. DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARD The club currently encourages our junior members to take advantage of the opportunities presented by the Duke of Edinburgh Award. While not a SLSA activity, the award and the activities undertaken, develop in our young outstanding qualities that provide a platform for personal development, which translate perfectly to the skills required by successful lifesavers. A recent excursion was organised by Gold Duke of Edinburgh participants Toby Phillips and Joseph Butterworth. The following Moana youth members completed their requirements for their Bronze award under very challenging conditions: we congratulate Bronwyn Mullany, Ellie Hargreaves, Lachlan Campbell and Nicola Lieff. The group kayaked down the river Murray from Berri to Lake Bonney in mid-december, camping on most nights and carrying their food, cooking equipment and tents. They also paddled for over eight gruelling hours each day. Well done to all and to Angie Phillips, who oversaw the excursion.

HARVEST FESTIVAL Once again, Moana SLSC has been invited to be part of the working party of the Harvest Festival, an annual event conducted at McLaren Vale Oval. This year s event on the 14 th January is an opportunity for the club to raise some funds for the club by volunteering our services on the day. If you are able to commit a short amount of time on that Saturday, the club would be grateful. Please contact Peter Kerrison, the club s Vice President, who is coordinating the activity on vicepres@moanaslsc.com.au to indicate your availability to assist on the day. It is encouraging to see the sand returning to our beach!!! See you on the beach, Jim Fenoughty Carnival Entries Process In 2016 SLSSA have implemented a charge for entry into any Carnival. This applies to all areas, Juniors, Seniors, Masters, Boats and IRB s. The cost will very for each areas, with the entry cost about $11.50. Competitors are entered into the Carnival, whereby, the will be sent an invoice for the entry cost. This invoice Must be paid prior to the Carnival. If the invoice is not paid by the time of the Carnival closing date, the Competitor will be removed from the event and will not be able to compete. Club Swim Club Swim starts this Saturday 7 January 2017 will occur each Saturday through the remainder of the Season. It is intended that we will co-ordinate the start time at around 4.30pm with the Juniors to enable as many of the older Nippers and possibly their parents (if Members) to join in. Marshalling starts at 4.15pm. The swim initially would be around 250/300 metres being promoted to all current financial Members. We will require water cover, if you can assist in this area please notify Neil Wilson at captain@moanaslsc.com.au. One Club Function Life Members will be hosting this function for all Moana members on Saturday 21st January at the conclusion of Junior Training (1630). The Life Members will be supplying and cooking BBQ (Sausages) free for all members however you are also welcome to bring your own meat to cook. The bar will be open, music supplied. Please bring salad or nibbles to share if you can. This will be a great opportunity for all areas of the club to socialise in a fun and friendly environment and all the Life members hope to see you there!

Club Fundraiser You are invited to join us for a "Club" Fundraiser on the 14th January 2017 at the Noarlunga Cinema to see Disneys "Moana". $15 a ticket and starts at 6.30pm. Please contact Sonia Herpich at juniorcoordinator@moanaslsc.com.au or Angela Phillips at youth@moanaslsc.com.au. Training Well Done to the latest Squad through the SRC and Bronze. A big thanks to their trainers Sheena, Chris, Emily and Dee. Moana Triple Crown This season is the first season for the Nippers endurance event, the Moana Triple Crown. The event is the brain child of Jamie Hole, where the Nippers run, swim and board over an extended iron person course. There will be three events over the season and all competitors who complete all three events will receive a special edition Moana Triple Crown medal. The first event was very well attended. A big thank you to Jamie Hole, Tony Frances and E Patrol for all their support. The remaining two events will be held on 15 th January and 5 th February 2017. Any nipper wishing to enter, please see their age group manager, Angela or Sonia.

Santa visited the Moana SLSC Nippers On the last Nipper training session for the year, the Nippers were visited by a very special guest. All Nippers received a small gift from Santa, some of the adults also didn t miss out on the chance to ask for what they wanted for Christmas. Duke of Edinburgh s Award Six of the Moana SLSC Youth departed Berri on Monday 19 th December to participate in a Duke of Edinburgh s Adventurous Journey. The journey was planned by Toby Phillips and Joseph Butterworth who are undertaking the Gold Award. Also participating in the journey was Ellie Hargreaves, Bronwyn Mullany, Lachlan Campbell and Nicola Lieff who are all completing the Bronze Award. The group kayaked from Berri to Lake Bonney, wild camping, carrying their sleeping and cooking equipment. The group would like to thank all their support crew, who made the journey possible. Kate Powell, Sasha Hargreaves, Cecilia Ewans, Hannah, Johnny, Frodes and Angela Phillips. As well as moral support from Rory Phillips, Aimee Hargreaves and Alex Butterworth. If any Youth member 14 years or above would like to complete the Duke of Edinburgh s Award please contact Ange Phillips on 0427197260 or youth@moanaslsc.com.au
