Homelands Schools Battle It Out On the Athletics Field The 4 the homelands schools Clinic, Irrultja, Soapy Bore and Amungalindum did athletic s skill work, leading up to coming into Arlparra for a day of athletics. Each student participated in a range of field events and track events to score points for their school. We saw some great throwing styles, strong pulling in the Tug of War and the dust was flying off their feet in the sprints. At the end of the day it was Soapy Bore declared the winners with 241 points, 2nd was Clinic with 139, 3rd Irrultja with 120 and in 4th place was Amungalindumwith 82 Page 2
WORK OUT ON WATER Tennant Creek High School girls with the Stars Foundation and Barkly Sports Coordinator Pam Dillon experienced first hand the fitness benefits of canoeing this week! The girls had a lot of laughs as they tried to man oeuvre their way around the dam and up into the small creeks. Watching bird life pass by and trying to stay in a straight line proved to make for a great afternoon on the water! Canoeing calls for teamwork and good communications skills to ensure everyone stays on top of the water and not in it! The girls worked together so well and should be very proud of themselves. Thanks girls its was lots of fun! Thanks to Pam Dillon for the great instructions and direction and to Anyinginyi Sport and Rec for use of the Canoes. By Meg Baker Page 3
Murray Downs and Alekarenge Combine For A Fun Filled Activity Day Students from Alekarenge School ventured down the dirt road to Murray Downs School to join in with the students and Murray Downs Station Children to have a fun filled day of various sporting activities. All participated in an obstacle course that had the students racing against each other in jumping activities. A friendly game of Space Ball was played in which students wear a Velcro vest and run away from others who are throwing soft cloth covered balls at them to stick on their vest. All students were all mixed up and divided into teams of 5 to compete in the Minute To Win It competition. This saw the students competing against the clock to compete each activity and score as many points as possible for their team. They rotated through 5 different activities which included ping pong ball throwing into a bucket head dress worn by another student in their team, foam javelin throwing to targets, lawn bowls to a target, hoop throwing and ball rolling through hurdles. Each team pushed themselves to get as many points as they could in the allotted time. A game of softball with a foam ball was played before lunch. The last activity for the day was a game of Bin Ball which everyone enjoyed dodging and weaving as the opposition threw soft foam balls at each other to try and get them out. Both schools look forward to socializing again through friendly sports and activities
BARKLY BAGS 19 MEDALS AT NT ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS The Barkly Region School sports Athletics team have just returned from their most successfully Athletics Championships. Students from TCH,TCP, Ti Tree, Alpurrurulam, Alekarenge, Elliott and Neutral Junction came together to form a very competitive team. The weather was very hot and humid but our students tried their hardest and won 5 Gold, 6 Silver and 8 Bronze medals over the two day event. Students not only competed against our Regional teams but also lots of Little Athletics Clubs who travelled to be a part of the Championships. Michael Jones from TCH was our very first competitor in the NT Cross Country and he finished 10th in his 3km race. Well done Michael as it was very hot and humid running around that track. At the end of the Championships winning School Sports Regions were announced with Darwin topping the ladder followed by PARRS, Arnhem, Barkly and then Katherine Region. The March Past Trophy was announced with Barkly being the winners for the very first time, all students were very excited to receive this trophy and were very proud to have a group photo with it and it travelled all the way back in the bus with them to Tennant Creek. The students had the Sunday off before the big drive home on Monday, they enjoyed the water park followed by shopping and to top off their day of rest they ventured into the new King Pin Centre to play Laser Tag which was one of the highlights of their day off. Id like to thank Elyse from Alpurrurulam and Bev from Elliott who drove the team up to Darwin and back and organised the team for their events. 7 CANTEEN CREEK PADDLE POLICEMANS WATER HOLE 14 students donned on their Life Jackets and ventured out onto the water at Policeman's Waterhole to learn the skills of Kayaking. This was a part of a 2 day Camp that also involved camping, bush walking and swimming. The students paddled up the waterhole and spotted various kinds of birdlife and went mussel collecting. Edward Wilson a teacher from the school organised the camp to get the students out into the bush environment and to take advantage of this beautiful site close to their community and the school owned Kayaks. The students kayaking skills improved greatly over the 2 days and all are looking forward to camping out there again.
Three Barkly Boys Make The NT Touch Team Congratulations to Andrew Green, Andrew Peckham and Cooper Gould who were selected in the U/12 NT Touch squad who will travel to Perth in October for Australian Championships. The Barkly Region Team travelled 2 days to Nuhlunbuy to compete against other regions in the NT U/12 Championships. All the boys played very well and managed to come 3rd and I have been receiving messages on how well the Barkly boys have improved and how well they played. Throughout the championships. Thanks goes to Lachlan Dunneman who went up as an umpire and did a great job and also helped out with the team when needed. A big thank you goes to their coach Yves Makita and manager Ruth Hillier for all the work they have put into the team prior and during the Championships. Page 8
