1 Issue 6, March 2014 What s in this issue? Presidents Message Presidents Message It s Official Special Awards What s Coming Up Investment for the future Get your badges here Calendar Volunteer Roster Dear Athletes and Families, its been a huge season already and with only a month remaining, our attention for a little while goes to those athletes who are representing the Tigers at the upcoming Championships. For those of us with children in the U6s and U7s, Ginninderra offers a junior Club Championship so these kids get the opportunity to participate for ribbons in their favourite events just like the older kids. March then finishes with the ACT Championships at the AIS and this will conclude what s been a year full of achievements. Our MyResults website reports that there has been over 3300 Personal Bests set this season. That s 10 PBs for every athlete registered in the club. Well done to you all! This is the last issue of the Roar for the year and I would like to thank Fiona Jarvis who every month pulls together this great publication on the going s on at Ginninderra. For all our parent volunteers, age marshals, officials, canteen team and committee members a special thanks to you also. The program couldn t run without your support and our combined efforts make the weekends so much fun. If you have ideas, suggestions or feedback on the performance of the Committee, please attend the AGM after presentation day and let s chat. We can always improve and that starts by listening to you our members. Yours in sport, Steve Dodt President Ginninderra Tigers Athletics Location: Sport Way, Charnwood, Belconnen ACT, Telephone (only on Sat mornings) President president@ginninderra.com Website: It s Official Every parent starts somewhere in Little Athletics, as a helper, a spotter, a recorder or as a timekeeper. For most parents the thought of being an Official is a daunting concept. Normally there is a Key Official who is happy to help new parents understand the basics & also impart some of this knowledge. Completing a Level D exam in an event is like getting a head start in this respect because it allows you to get an understanding of the basic rules of an event, and in that way help your kids understand why a throw or jump is not valid or why an athlete was disqualified. Congratulations to the following parents who have all successfully been accredited: Daniel Connolly, Matt Cuzner, Kirsty Leslie, Damian Munday, Marie Smith, Kim Sturgiss, Steve Wallace, Alex Weinhardt, Tim Liddiard, Alison Cerritelli, Amanda Guest, Geoff Love, Glen Hatherly, Meegan Foster. Boy and girl athletes who most epitomise the meaning of Little Athletics? Each year Ginninderra presents two awards that recognise qualities other than athletic ability. These are: Colman Trophy: Boy and girl athletes who most epitomise the meaning of Little Athletics, ie Family, Fun and Fitness. Goldsmith Trophy: Boy and girl athletes who have provided the most help and support to the Club regardless of ability. Nominations for these awards are now open All you need to do is send an to secretary@ginninderra.com stating: - who you are nominating; - the award you are nominating that person for and - a brief explanation (max 100 words) as to why they deserve the award. All nominations will be collated & presented to the Committee for a decision.
2 Page 2 What s Coming up? The Northside Regional Championships are being held at Charnwood Oval on the 1st and 2ns of March. is a qualifying meet for eligibility to compete at the ACT Championships. Every child U9 and above at the Tigers are eligible to compete in five to seven events. Children in the U8s can compete in 5 events but will not progress to the State Championships. is a great team event and the Tigers make a real carnival out of the two days with plenty of chanting, dressing up and supporting each other. Last season Ginninderra claimed for the first time the John Hunt Northside Championship Award which is presented to the Centre achieving the highest aggregate points score at the Northside Regional Championships. Club Championships For only the second time in Ginninderra s 37 years it is proud to offer a Club Championship in Championship places will be based solely on results of Ginninderra Athletes (U8 U17 Age Groups) competing at the Northside. The underage Club Championship for U6 U7s will be held in the weekends following. Place ribbons will be awarded to the top three Ginninderra athletes in each and every event and a participation ribbon will be presented to all other competitors. Ribbons will be handed to athletes in the weekends following. Entry is free to however there is a restriction on the number of events an athlete can enter. ACT Championships The ACT Little Athletics Association State Championships are held at the AIS Track in Bruce on 22nd and 23rd of March Qualification is via the Regional Championships at the beginning of March. Athletes who finish in the top 4 in all sprint events, top 6 in the middle distance events and top 6 in field events are automatically qualified for the State Champs. This event concludes our official season and there is a weekend off before our annual Presentation Day. Presentation Day and Annual General Meeting Presentation Day is held at Lake Ginninderra in John Knight Memorial Park on Saturday 5th April from 9am. Club Awards are presented to little athletes at presentation day. Athletes must have competed in at least 25% of the total number of events planned for the season to be eligible for the main awards. Every child who is registered at our Club, and who does not receive a special trophy will receive a participation medal at the end of the season. A healthy club requires a healthy committee. If you have ideas and opinions about Ginninderra and Little Athletics we strongly encourage your participation on the Committee. The AGM is held at the end of presentation day.
3 Page 3 Investment for the future Today the ACT Government has provided Ginninderra Little Athletics Club with a financial grant under the 2014 Capital Assistance Program. The primary objective of the CAP is to, in accordance within the Active 2020 Strategy, provide financial assistance to eligible organisations for capital developments that will support participation in active lifestyles through the delivery of quality programs and services for the benefit of the Canberra community. The funding continues the Tigers investment in the future of Athletics in Belconnen since 1976 and builds upon significant facilities development in the provision of professional discus cages, full-sized jumping pits and timing gates. In 2014 this will now be extended to a Hurdle Replacement Program. Club President Steve Dodt says Ginninderra currently must supply hurdles for Athletes from as young as 8 years up to 17 years at present. On any given Saturday we use 48 Hurdles for junior Athletes (60mH) and 80 Hurdles for senior Athletes (80mH ~ 200mH). We will in the near future provide Hurdles for athletes competing in Belconnen at the Under 20 and Open age groups too as we return to being an all age athletics club. The Hurdle Replacement Program will enable Ginninderra to better meet the needs of its members and those of the local community. Ginninderra has over the last 5 years grown a reputation of being the home of grass roots athletics in Belconnen and a number of schools hire their facilities and equipment including Hurdles. Our growing engagement with Senior Athletics through Athletics ACT saw for the first time an AACT track and field event staged outside the AIS. Ginninderra s involvement with members of Companion House through the LAACT initiatives to encourage migrant children into the wider community is proving very popular with families in Dunlop and West Belconnen. The Tigers investment in the future of the sport has been paying dividends this season with the club twice knocking off the bigger clubs in the ACT with wins in the LAACT Relay and Multi Event Championships. With just a month remaining, Ginninderra are looking forward to a great team performance at the Northside Regional Championships at Charnwood Oval on the 1st and 2nd of March before heading into the ACT Championships later that month. Ginninderra s unprecedented level of investment over the last 5 years now totals in excess of $80,000 in improvements to Charnwood Oval. This funding has been provided 50/50 between the club and its generous sponsors, who include the Magpies Sports Club, The Paint Place Mitchell, Ride 365, Conveyancing Canberra, Kippax Fair, ACT Tyrepower Belconnen, Ray White Belconnen, St John Ambulance, Framed Like That, Australian Surveillance Systems and the Coffee Club Canberra Centre. Get your badges here are primarily for recognition of improvement by the child from week to week. Merit badges are awarded for the completion of 50, 100, 200 and 300 events. On reaching these number of events and to obtain a badge, your child must hand in their ticket booklet, with the tickets stuck in, to the Canteen. As the ticket count is cumulative, make sure that the previous season books are also presented. All tickets received whilst competing in LAs competitions (not just at our club) should be presented. For athletes with 400, 500, 600 or 700 tickets, medals/trophies are awarded on presentation day. Each child receives a ticket for each event they compete in. These tickets display times or distances and should be glued into their event ticket book. They
