SAILING ASSOCIATION OF MARCO ISLAND P. O. BOX 61, MARCO ISLAND, FL 34146 www.samisailor.org August 2016 Philip M. Litow Vice Commodore Philip Litow, 79, died unexpectedly on July 28, 2016. Phil was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA, a proud graduate of Central High School, Penn State University (1958) and Temple University (M. Ed.). Phil s lifelong passion for football in general, and the Philadelphia Eagles and the Nittany Lions in particular, was well known. He was a teacher in the Philadelphia School System for many years and a tennis coach. Upon retirement, he followed his passion for sailing, purchased a Morgan 382 sailboat Renaissance and operated a chartering business, while continuing to teach on a substitute basis. He made many lifelong friends during sailing trips on the Chesapeake Bay, the BVIs, Grenadines, Cuba, and Greece, among others. In 2005, he moved to Naples, FL with his partner, Leigh Breeden. He was a member of Marco Island and Naples sailing clubs, and was the current Vice Commodore of SAMI. Phil was also a volunteer at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida where he was a boat captain. Phil is survived by his sister Connie Pearlstein of Philadelphia; nephews Seth Pearlstein and Bill Pearlstein, and grandnephew Joshua; niece Susan Echenhoffer and grand-niece Marvel; as well as his partner Leigh Breeden. Funeral will be private; a memorial service will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Phil would want donations to be made to a charity of your choice.
The thoughts of the Commodore and Rear Commodore (below) were prepared before word was received of the untimely passing of Vice Commodore, Phil Litow. COMMODORE S CABIN Ken Bardon, Commodore CRUISIN ABOUT Micki Gobeil, Rear Commodore And the summer continues. After visiting with SAMI members Rob and Donna Reiley at their Adirondack lake cottage (see picture below), Lil and I continued our driving trip North to the Canadian Lake country to visit with other sailing friends, Alan and Marilyn, and Jens and Evelyn, all of whom were participants in our around the world cruise over the last three years. Our final stop on our trip will be with fellow SAMI members Gary and Kim Bill in Michigan and, hopefully, we will do some lake sailing on their sailboat. And finally...we'll head back to Long Island to do some sailing on Moonbeam. We both wish you a continued enjoyable summer, and look forward to seeing you all when we return to Marco in September. After a long, hot, quiet summer, it is time for SAMI CRUISERS to set sail once again. Our next scheduled cruise is September 9-12 to Fisherman's Village, Punta Gorda. You won't want to miss this one. For our land cruisers, this is only a two hour drive up US 75 or US 41. For Gulf cruisers, this is a ten-twelve hour sail. Once you arrive you will find shops, restaurants, things to see and do galore, and all within walking distance of the marina. If you are planning to go on this cruise, please let me know ASAP so we can get together to make some final plans to drive up or sail up as a fleet. I will be sending out a SPECIAL E-MAIL soon with more specific information and also maps of the coast line and destination. Gilles and I have room for a couple on board Lady M if there is anyone who would like to go but does not have a boat at this time. Before the cruise though don t forget SAMI'S annual PICNIC IN THE PARK at Sarazen Park on Saturday, August 13th, starting at noon until...sirloin burgers, hot dogs, with all of the trimmings, cold beverages and utensils will be provided. You only need to show up with a covered dish to share. Since you can count on it being hot and humid in August, dress cool and come hungry! I have sent out a SPECIAL E-MAIL SIGN UP SHEET for picnic dishes to be provided. by the SAMI Members so please select the dish from the list you plan to provide and let me know ASAP. 642-4241 or mickigo@embarqmail.com SAVE THE DATE!
