Frisco (12-16, 50-47) at Corpus Christi (13-15, 60-38) Saturday, July 23, 2016 Whataburger Field Corpus Christi, TX 7:05 p.m. ON THE RECORD: 25-22 Home 35-16 Road 16-8-3 Series 5-1 Sweeps W 1 Streak 2-3 Last 5 3-7 Last 10 PLAYING ADD-ON: A stellar start by Edison Frias and late solo home runs by Nick Tanielu and Danry Vasquez helped Corpus Christi beat Frisco 4-3 Friday night before 7,614 fans at Whataburger Field. Scott Carroll, making his debut as a Rangers farmhand, opened the game with lead-off walk to Nolan Fontana. Fontana stole second, moved to third on a Garrett Stubbs single and then scored via a groundout by J.D. Davis. Carroll proceeded to blank Corpus Christi over the next four innings. The Hooks broke through against Jose Monegro in the sixth. Davis reached on a force play and Vasquez muscled a two-out double into the right field corner. Davis appeared to be in jeopardy rounding third but scored when Kellin Deglan could not handle the throw home. Frias kept Frisco off the scoreboard over the first four innings, permitting two men to reach. Three consecutive singles began the fifth, resulting in a run for the RoughRiders. Frias stranded two in the inning. He countered a lead-off single in the sixth with six straight outs. Tanielu provided some insurance with a lead-off bomb in the seventh. With two away in the eighth, Vasquez went deep to right field off Luke Jackson. Aaron West worked a perfect eighth but allowed two unearned runs in the ninth. Albert Minnis was called upon to get the final out, stranding the tying run at first base. PAGE 2 MIGHTY FINE: RHP Edison Frias dispatched 11 of the first 13 batters he faced last night. Frias yielded 4 singles from the 5th thru the 6th, but the RoughRiders went 1-for-6 with men in scoring position, striking out 3 times. The 25-year-old from Gaspar Hernandez, DR, has limited Frisco to 1 run in each of his last 2 starts. During this run, Frias has struck out 10 against 2 walks in 13.0 innings. For the year, Frias stands 4-1 with a 2.44 ERA and 1 save in 15 appearances (10 starts), holding the Texas League to a.222 batting average. He would lead the circuit in ERA, but is 5 frames shy of the qualifying threshold. ROSTER UPDATE: The Astros promoted RHP Trent Thornton to Corpus Christi from High-A Lancaster, and placed IF Chase McDonald on the Hooks inactive list. Thornton, a 5th-round pick of the Astros last year out of UNC, went 7-4 with a 4.12 ERA in 17 games (14 starts). The 22-year-old right-hander struck out 89 against 16 walks and 91 hits in 89.2 IP. The Cal League batted.265 with 14 home runs against him. Thornton ranked 4th in the league in WHIP (1.19) and tied for 2nd in HR allowed. His 1.49 BB-per-9.0 IP ratio slotted 2nd among starters. Thornton is 1 of 2 California League pitchers to muster a shutout, doing so in the opener of a July 14 doubleheader vs. San Jose. The former UNC Tar Heel won his last 4 Lancaster starts, posting a 2.70 ERA while striking out 28 against 2 walks in 26.2 frames. Thompson last worked Tuesday, hurling 6.0 innings at Rancho Cucamonga. NEW ADDITION: OF Ramon Laureano, who joined the Hooks from Lancaster Thursday, went 0-for-3 and was hit by a pitch in his Double-A debut last night. Laureano, 22, was hitting.317 with 19 doubles, 5 triples, 10 home runs, 60 RBIs and 33 stolen bases in 80 games for the JetHawks. At the time of his promotion, he led the California League in on-base percentage (.426), runs (69) and walks (50), while tying for 1st in steals. Laureano also ranked among the league leaders in batting average (T-3rd), RBIs (T-3rd) and slugging percentage (.519, 4th). He last appeared for the JetHawks on Tuesday at Rancho Cucamonga, going 0-for-3 with 2 walks. Laureano had hit safely in his prior 14 games, batting.519 with 6 doubles, 2 triples, 4 home runs and 14 RBIs, whilst sporting a.583 on-base average. DUFFY TO TEXAS: Former Hook and 2015 Pacific Coast League MVP Matt Duffy was claimed on waivers by the Rangers, and assigned to Triple-A Round Rock. IF Duffy was designated for assignment last Saturday to clear a spot on the Astros 40 -man roster for Cuban IF Yulieski Gurriel. Duffy spent most of the year at Triple-A Fresno, hitting.226 with 6 home runs and 30 RBIs in 74 games. The 2014 Texas League South All-Star made his Major League debut last year, and was 3-for-11 with 1 double and 3 RBIs as an Astro over the past 2 campaigns. Duffy spent parts of 2013 and 2014 with Corpus Christi, batting.285 with 11 home runs and 45 RBIs in 73 assignments. The 27-year-old Massachusetts native hit.294 with 29 doubles, 20 homers and 104 RBIs for the Triple-A champion Grizzlies last season.
