Andrew Thome picked up the triumph for Corpus Christi, retiring all four men he faced. Meanwhile, Riley Ferrell blanked the Hounds over a career-high three innings. The visitor s bullpen was impressive as well. Hard-throwing Lou Trivino penned 2 2/3 perfect frames and lefty Cody Stull had dispatched seven of eight leading up to the one-out Laureano salvo in the 12th. Hooks starter Dean Deetz fired five shutout innings, supporting a pair of early RBIs by Jon Singleton. Trailing 2-0, the Hounds pounced on Corpus Christi southpaw Kent Emanuel for three runs in the sixth. Brett Vertigan opened the stanza by grounding a double down the left-field line. One out later, B.J. Boyd singled through the left-side, putting Midland on the board. J.P. Sportman gave his club a 3-2 edge with his second home run in as many nights, a no-doubt laser to left field. James Naile worked the first four for Midland before being relieved by Grant Holmes. The A s prospect stranded two in the fifth and faced three in the sixth thanks to a double play. Holmes jumped ahead of Bryan Muniz, 0-2, to begin the seventh, but Muniz finished off an eight-pitch at-bat with a monster home run that landed to the left of the cotton press beyond the left-field wall. Right-handed pitchers Ralph Garza and Ryan Deemes join the club from High-A Buies Creek. IF Tyler Wolfe comes to Corpus Christi from extended spring training. Mayfield batted.258 with 5 doubles, 1 triple, 2 home runs and 8 RBIs in 17 games for the Hooks. The 26-year-old from Del Rio logged 45 games with the Grizzlies to finish Deemes last pitched Sunday at Carolina, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits and 1 walk in 1.2 innings. He had pitched 3 scoreless innings to start 2017, striking out 6 against 3 hits. The former Nicholls State Colonel posted a 5-1 record, 2.93 ERA and 7 saves in 40 games between Quad Cities, Lancaster and Corpus Christi last year. Deemes featured a 1.10 WHIP and struck out 63 while walking 18 in 73.2 IP. Garza pitcher predominantly at Quad Cities last year, going 5-4 with a 2.33 ERA and 6 saves in 32 outings. The New Braunfels resident finished the campaign with an 8-game stint at Lancaster. The 23-year-old out of Maple Plain, MN, was drafted in the 39th round last year out of Kansas State. DAZZLIN DEETZ: RHP Dean Deetz turned in another electric performance last night. In 3 assignments this season, Deetz has permitted only 1 run on 4 hits and 3 walks, while striking out 13 over 13.2 innings. Dating back to the end of last season, Deetz is 4-0 with a 0.35 ERA (1 R, 25.2 IP) and 0.62 WHIP in 5 Texas League outings. The hard-throwing right-hander has struck out 30 and walked only 5 in 25.2 Double-A innings. IMPRESSIVE PEN: Right-handers Riley Ferrell and Andrew Thome were key cogs in Corpus Christi s dramatic win last night. Ferrell has been charged with 1 run in 7.0 innings over 4 appearances with the Hooks. WALK IT OFF: OF Ramon Laureano s 12th-inning blast last night was the 25th walk-off home run in club history. The Hooks boasted 7 last-at-bat triumphs in 2016, with 3 decided via home runs.
