September, 2017 ISFR ASPEN SNOWMASS January 27 February 3, 2018 Ed. Note. Last year your ISFR board member, Marilyn Branch, stepped in at the last minute and organized the meeting at Jackson Hole. Now, with a year to be able to plan for Snowmass, she has created an excellent meeting for us. Here is her report: IF IT S ISFR, IT MUST BE SNOWMASS!! This year it is SNOWMASS, CO for our annual ISFR Ski Week, January 27 to February 3, 2018! Have YOU made your reservations yet? Have you REGISTERED on our website yet? (www.isfrski.org) This year marks the 50 YEAR ANNIVERSARY of Snowmass Ski Resort so expect a lot of memorabilia and specials going on throughout the village while you are there!

Snowmass under the full moon Our Ski Week is coming together nicely and 39 people have already made reservations. When we run out of rooms in our block, the Stonebridge Inn has agreed to continue our discount ($219 per night) on any remaining rooms until there are none left. That being said, you should make your reservations today (deadline November 28) by calling The Stonebridge Inn at 800-922-7242 and identify yourself as a member of ISFR-Rotary in order to reserve within our block and get our discount. You can also make your reservation on-line at www.destinationsnowmass.com. Click on Accommodations and follow the steps. Our GROUP CODE is Rotary! If you have problems, please contact Marilyn at 970-708-2202 or branchm@telluridecolorado.net. Our hotel offers limited free transportation from Aspen Airport, just 20 minutes away with a call to them on your arrival. Registration for the ski week must be made on our website, www.isfrski.org, and you have to be a current member ($35 dues) in order to do so. The fee for the meeting this year is $390 (it goes up to $440 after October 31) and includes: Welcome Party, Seven Gourmet Buffet Breakfasts, Home Hospitality, Annual General Meeting (with hors d oeuvres), Joint Rotary Meeting, GALA, group photo and more! Lift tickets to ski ALL FOUR MOUNTAINS are just $59 this year! We will have an on-line access to purchase them (it must be done at least two weeks in advance) so keep an eye out in late October or early November for instructions. Also, Snowmass Sports has offered a 30% discount on ski/snowboard equipment rentals for those who don t want to schlep their own. Again, the on-line opportunity to reserve these will be coming to you later.

Skiers will have access to Snowmass Mountain Tours on Sunday, hosted by Steve Sewell, the Mountain Manager. Also, Tuesday and Thursday at 8:00 AM, Steve is arranging First Tracks for ISFR members. Signups will be available at the Saturday registration. There will be a good number of other activities for non-skiers and for those who want a day off the slopes or a special evening event. In the works are: 1) lunch excursion to historic Redstone Inn; 2) lunch at iconic Woody Creek Tavern; 3) Foodie Food Tour behind the scenes in Aspen restaurants/food shops; 4) lunch at Krabloonik and time with the dogs...maybe dogsledding, too; 5) Dinner via snow cat to Lynn Britt Cabin on Snowmass Mountain; 6) Woody Creek Distillery Tour and Tasting; 7) Escape Room in Glenwood Springs (more on this one later), and, of course, Home Hospitality on Sunday evening, and a Joint Rotary Meeting with the Snowmass club at our regular breakfast on Wednesday (Bring your club banner for an exchange with the Rotary Club of Snowmass Village, our hosts!). Plan now for a special item to bring with you to include in our Silent Auction at The GALA! Perhaps you can talk to your local club members to put together a trip to your area for the Live Auction! Local Rotarians are already cooking up some special treats for the Dessert Auction. As is our norm, half of the monies raised during our Ski Week will go to Challenge Aspen, the local adaptive ski program. See www.challengeaspen.org. Some of you may remember our AGM speaker in Aspen seven years ago, Amanda Boxtel. She is still in the area working with the Bridging Bionics Foundation, and has made great progress with use of the Bionic Electroskeletal Suit that allows paraplegics and others with debilitating injuries to stand upright and walk again. She will be our speaker at the Joint Rotary Meeting Wednesday morning, a definite do not miss! Take a look at www.bridgingbionics.org. All of the above information is meant to entice you to make your plans now to attend ISFR Ski Week in Snowmass! Talk to fellow Rotarians in your club, in your district and elsewhere around the world and ask them to join you! If you come a day early, you can even catch the X-Games at Buttermilk Ski Area, just 15 minutes away from our hotel! Please direct any comments or suggestions to Marilyn Branch at branchm@telluridecolorado.net

EUROPEAN MEEETING: February 10-17, 2018 Jasna, Slovakia The European meeting will be held at Jasna, Slovakia, February 10-17, 2018. Registration begins at 13:00 on Saturday February 10 with the Opening Ceremony on Sunday at 16:00, and the closing Gala and awards ceremony on Friday evening. There will be guided skiing on Monday and Tuesday, with the racing event on Thursday. Cross country skiing and racing will also be available as well as activities for non-skiers. Arrival flights are recommended into Vienna, with a booked shuttle and sightseeing in Bratislava arranged by the host organizing committee. Sightseeing in Krakow, Poland, a trip to the High Tatras on Monday, a Fine Arts and Culinary trip to historical nearby towns on Tuesday, a trip titled Liptov Region Traditions on Wednesday, and a Friday trip to Tatralandia Thermal Park on Friday will give everyone plenty of opportunities for variety. The Rotary Club Bratislava Danube and the Rotary Club Liptovský Mikuláš will be the hosts, and all accommodations will be at the Hotel Grand in Jasna For more information, go to: www.isfr.eu/next-events

President Al s Comments: Wow, it is 108 F (42 C) outside as I write this. I am really looking forward to snow! (Yeah, I know all you Aussies and South Americans are right in the middle of a great ski season. I wish I could join you for a few runs) Lynne Beck, Don Goering, Margaret Blowey Atlanta Convention It was a pleasure getting to see so many of you at the Atlanta Convention. Jerry Anne and I thoroughly enjoyed the convention. 33,000 Rotarians from 174 countries were there! The ISFR booth had good exposure in the House of Friendship, being just around the corner from the Beer Fellowship and the Wine Appreciation Fellowship. We added many names to our mailing list and gained several new members. Thank you to members Lynne Beck, Margaret Blowey, Don and Doris Goering, Greg Jasper and Elenita Parker for attending the booth along with Jerry Anne and me. Did I miss anyone? If so, I apologize. ISFR will be at Toronto in 2018. If you are planning to attend the Toronto Rotary International Convention, please consider helping out in the ISFR House of Friendship booth. It is great fun and you get to meet a lot of people who are interested in skiing. 2020...Already? Our next North American meeting is, of course, at Aspen/Snowmass, Colorado, USA in 2018. The 2019 the North American meeting will be a return to Telluride, Colorado, USA. But what about 2020? Well, we are looking for sites to host our 2020 meeting. If you have a North American resort or ski community that you think would be a good fit for an ISFR event, please let me know. If you have contacts in a resort or ski community Rotary club that ISFR should consider please let me know, especially you Canadian members, we are overdue for a visit to Canada. Fellowship Leadership There are a few vacancies on our Board of Directors and Fellowship Officers. If you or a member you know would like to have a more direct input into the operations of our fellowship let me know and we can match you up with a position. If you nominate

someone else, please clear it with that individual. We promise that our board meeting at the annual North American event will not interfere with time on the slopes. I look forward to seeing you and skiing with you at Snowmass, Colorado, or at Jasna, Slovakia in 2018. Best regards, Al Morris President, ISFR Ed.note: It looks like your board and the Snowmass Village Rotary Club has done a great job arranging for an exceptional get together. Get on your horse and get registered soon! Join Rotarians from USA, U.K., Austria, Australia, Germany, and Switzerland (with Canadians waiting in the wings) for a great week of skiing and fellowship. I have heard of some ISFR members who are travelling alone and who are looking to share a room at the Stonebridge Inn at Snowmass. If you are one of those folks, and are willing to share a room, please let Marilyn Branch know. branchm@telluridecolorado.net She ll put the two of you in touch so you can make arrangements, International Skiing Fellowship of Rotarians www.isfrski.org President: Al Morris, bighat@ix.netcom.com, Past President: Tony Sheer, Margaret Hutchinson, secretary, Lynne Beck, treasurer Board members: David Hoyt, Abby O Neal, Drew Vactor, Allyson Walter, Marilyn Branch DBMF - Davis Boyd Memorial Foundation President: Jeff Penza JPenza@PenzaBailey.com, John Shierholz, Vice President, Past President: Jim Tomlin, Brian Anderson, Ben Lawton, treasurer, Lyn Stroshin, secretary, Jim Scott, R.
