SERIES PREVIEW Campbell (24-18, 15-3 Big South) is coming off a midweek upset victory at No. 5 NC State. The Camels downed the Wolfpack 5-4 in Raleigh for CU s first win over a ranked opponent since 2015 (No. 25 Coastal Carolina) and first win over a top-5 opponent since 2007 (No. 2 North Carolina). Matthew Barefoot lifted a solo home run in the top of the ninth to seal the victory over NC State. The outfielder from Dunn, N.C. leads the Camels in nine offensive categories: battting average (.327), on-base percentage (.464), runs scored (34), hits (49), doubles (11), triples (3), walks (23), HBP (17) and stolen bases (22). Christian Jones ranks second in the Big South with 12 homers and 43 RBI this season. The senior infielder out of Jacksonville, Fla. sits 26th and 70th in the nation in those categories, respectively. Campbell s pitching staff tops the Big South in ERA (4.49) and opposing batting average (.244) while ranking second in the league in strikeouts (389). Allan Winans (2.77) and Michael Horrell (2.85) sit first and third on the Big South s ERA leaderboard among starting pitchers in the conference. With a 15-3 record in league play, the Camels have already clinched a spot in the 2018 Big South Tournament. CU has swept four BSC opponents this season, just the fourth time that feat has been accomplished in program history and the first time since 2014. High Point (23-18, 12-6 BSC) also defeated an ACC opponent in the midweek, taking down Wake Forest in a home game on Tuesday, May 1. The Panthers have won three of their last four games and sit third in the Big South standings heading into the weekend. HPU tops the conference as a team in batting average (.291) and slugging percentage (.444). The Panthers have five players hitting above.300, highlighted by senior infielder Hunter Lee (.361/.469/.557). 2018 CAMPBELL UNIVERSITY BASEBALL #ROLLHUMPS CAMELS PULL THE UPSET AT NO. 5 NC STATE Campbell picked up a huge non-conference win on Wednesday with a 5-4 victory over No. 5 NC State in Raleigh. The win marked CU s first victory over a top five opponent since April 17, 2007 when Campbell downed No. 2 UNC-Chapel Hill 7-5. It was also CU s first victory over a ranked opponent since May 15, 2015 when Campbell defeated No. 25 Coastal Carolina 5-2. With the game tied 4-4 in the ninth, Matthew Barefoot launched a go-ahead solo homer over the left field wall. NC State stranded three runners in the bottom of the ninth as Tyson Messer recorded a strikeout and a groundout to second for the final two outs of the game. ROAD WARRIORS Campbell returns home after a 10-game road stretch that lasted 22 days. The Camels posted an 8-2 record over that span to move their overall away record to 13-5. CU picked up road sweeps over Presbyterian and Longwood, as well as midweek triumphs over N.C. Central (3-1) and No. 5 NC State (5-4). CU SWEEPS LANCERS FOR COMMANDING BSC LEAD Campbell outscored Longwood 30-7 in a three-game road sweep (4/20-22), including a dominant 15-1 victory in Saturday s matchup. Redshirt sophomore Matthew Barefoot led the Camels offensively, hitting 6-for-14 (.429) as the outfielder collected five extra-base hits in Farmville (3 2B, 3B, HR). Senior outfielder Jeff Hahs looked more like himself, cranking three home runs on the weekend for his first dingers of the year. The O Fallon, Ill. native missed the first month of the 2018 campaign with a broken bone in his hand after a Second Team All-Conference nod in 2017 that saw him hit a team-high 10 homers. Allan Winans (6.2 IP, 2 ER) and Michael Horrell (7.0 IP, 1 ER) each produced quality starts for Campbell on Friday and Saturday. The duo ranks first and third on the Big South ERA leaderboard at 2.77 and 2.85, respectively. JENKINS DEAL 10 K S AT PRESBYTERIAN Freshman right-hander Brandon Jenkins tallied a career-high 10 strikeouts in the series finale at Presbyterian. The Glendora, N.J. native tossed 6.0 innings with one earned run for his second quality start of the season. Jenkins outing marked the third time a Camel logged 10 or more K s in a single game this year. Redshirt senior Allan Winans dealt 12 K s over 6.0 IP in a 9-0 win over Rider (3/13), while Michael Horrell fanned 10 batters in a 5-1 victory over Western Michigan (2/24). BAREFOOT S LEADOFF DINGER AT PC FIRST FOR CU SINCE 2012 Redshirt-sophomore Matthew Barefoot launched a leadoff homer in Campbell s 7-6 win against Presbyterian on April 14, good for his second of the season and 10th as a Camel. It was the first leadoff home run by a Campbell player since March 5, 2012, when Jimmy Brenneman cranked a homer in an 8-0 win against Holy Cross. Matthew Barefoot led the Camels with 14 hits, five doubles, three homers and 10 RBI over the stretch, batting.333 and slugging.714. PITCHING CAMELS ON PACE FOR RECORD-BREAKING SEASON Through 42 games in 2018, the Campbell pitching staff has totaled 389 strikeouts. With a minimum of 14 games remaining (12 reg. season, 2 conf. tournament), CU is on pace for 519 K s that would shatter the Campbell record of 432 set in 2012. Campbell s current rate of 9.29 K s per nine innings would also break the school record of 8.24 set in 2000. JIM PERRY STADIUM ATT. RECORDS # OPPONENT ATTENDANCE DATE 1. #18 ECU 1563 2/22/17 2. The Campbell skipper joins Greg Goff (224 wins, 2008-14), Chip Smith (267 wins, 1996-2006) and Cal Koonce (174 wins, 1980-86) as the only head coaches in program history to reach triple-digit wins with the Camels. JOHNNY WHOLESTAFF RACKS UP 15 K S AT NCCU 11 Campbell pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts and just one earned run as CU defeated N.C. Central 3-1 on Tuesday, April 10. BAREFOOT + GIMENEZ: MASTERS OF STEALTH Redshirt-sophomore outfielder Matthew Barefoot has amassed 22 steals on 25 attempts so far this season, ranking him 22nd in all of NCAA Division I and first in the Big South. Allan Winans, Alex Yarem, Logan Bender and Tyson Messer combined for 17 strikeouts, no walks and no runs allowed as Campbell won 9-0.
