From the Editor/Webmaster Website hint Password Prompt Occasionally I get a call asking, Why don t I see the password prompt to get into the Members Only area? Well, if your browser is set NOT to allow JavaScript, or if your privacy level is set too high, you might not see that prompt (some people get the page at home, but your employer has disallowed it at work). Don t despair! You can still get to the Members Only area by entering the URL directly. (Easiest way is to click on the Trouble accessing Members Only area link on the Home Page, and following the instructions there. (If you ve forgotten the password, it appears on the back of your current membership card; if you re not a member, click on the Membership button on the website and follow instruction to join.) Remember once you do see the opening page for the Members Only area, you can bookmark the page on your browser and you won t have to remember the password at least until it changes next year. Summer is Here With the coming of the warm weather, ski trips are over, Lift Ticket Lotto (and the attendant ads in the newsletter) are done and there is more free space in the summer issues. So if you have an item you would like to include in any upcoming issue, this would be a good time to do it. Remember, no unsolicited or unannounced e-mail from Hudson Valley Ski Club has ever (and will never) contain attachments or embedded executable files. Mike SUMMER MEETING SCHEDULE: Summer meetings (now April through August) will be held only once a month on the first Wednesday of each month, starting at 8:00 PM. We resume the normal first and third Wednesday schedule September 3. Remaining summer meetings: July 2 August 6 editor@hudsonvalleyskiclub.org webmaster@hudsonvalleyskiclub.org

Vermont Bike Weekend House Trip Tuning Skis at Home Hosted by Trailsweepers Ski & Sport Club August 14--17 CANCELED We are going to have to cancel this trip due to insufficient sign ups. The longer we wait to cancel the trip the more money we loose from the deposit, so it's time to pull the plug. I'll return the checks to people as I see them (at Ski Club or otherwise). John Brooks 336-8446 (jlbrooks@ulster.net) Have you thought about tuning your skis at home? Without a tuning bench or a tuning vise? Some of the recent tuning equipment allows you to do it. First, locate a 2-foot long plastic storage box and some rubber bands. Retract the ski brakes and use the rubber bands to keep them out of the way. Place a ski, binding side down, on the storage box (with the lid removed). Make sure that none of the binding assembly is touching the box. Your ski is now supported well enough for base repairs and edge tuning. Plastic Base Repairs Buy a P-Tex TM candle, a lighter, and a metal scraper. This equipment is adequate for scrapes and gouges in the plastic base that do not expose the ski core or touch the metal edges. Clean and dry the bottom of the ski. Use a grill lighter to light the P- Tex candle. A match or a cigarette lighter can cause singed fingers. Once the candle is lit, drip its liquefied drops into the damaged area. Let the P-Tex cool and scrape off the excess until the patched area is level with the plastic base. You can make only temporary repairs to exposed core or exposed ski edges. Ski shops have the equipment to make relatively permanent repairs to these surfaces. Metal Edge Tuning Factories usually file the edges of the skis at an angle on the bottom (bottom bevel) and at another angle on the sides (side bevel). They tune only the metal edges. They do not file any plastic from the bottoms or the sides of the skis. Factories generally tune skis with a 1 degree bottom bevel and a 2-degree side bevel. Some specialty skis have different bevel angles. When the ski edges become worn, nicked, burred, or gouged, file the edges with the same base and edge bevels as the factory. File holders are available for various bottom bevels and various side bevels. Note that Swix now lists the 2-degree side bevel as an 88-degree side bevel. Buy the appropriate file holder, insert a small, 40 mm (about 2 inches) mill bastard file and go to work. Since these file holders fit into the palm of your hand, you can file with one hand while you steady the ski with the other. Note that since mill bastard files work in only one direction, you will file from front to back on one edge of a ski and back to front on the other edge. Since shaped skis do not require tip and tail detuning, you are done. Walt Gorgas
