STIX n PUX BMHA Newsletter PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Hello everyone, I hope everyone is enjoying the World Cup and the beautiful weather. Thank you to everyone who came out to the Association's AGM on May 23rd and your continued support of the Association. Including myself, the Executive welcomed 6 new members: Rupert Pong, 1st Vice President, overseeing the Association s Rep programs; David Jacobucci, 2nd Vice President, overseeing Junior Bulldogs to Novice (formerly H1 - H4); Lee Poizer, Director at Large, overseeing Female Hockey; Peter Chau, Head Coach; and Cheryl Reesor, Director at Large, overseeing Risk Management for the Association. We are fortunate to have Steve Beemish, 3rd Vice President (Bantam-Juvenile C), Harjot Guram, Director at Large (Atom-PeeWee C), and Mark Corra, Treasurer remain on to provide guidance as we move forward. And, as always, Larry Hayes continues to be a resource to the Executive with his years of recognized experience. I would like to thank the outgoing members of the Executive for their dedicated service to the Association over the years: Darryl Mah, President; Moe Velji, 1st Vice President; David Graham, 2nd Vice President; Echo Lee, Director at Large; Joe Wansink, Head Coach; and Kelly Miles, Director at Large The Association and its leaders have recently been recognized for outstanding contributions to amateur hockey: Burnaby Minor Hockey Association, 2017-2018 PCAHA Minor Hockey Association of the Year; Darryl Mah - Long-time volunteer and past president with BMHA was awarded the Meritorious Service Award by PCAHA for his outstanding contribution to amateur hockey in the lower mainland for a period of at least 5 years. Darryl was also honoured by the Association as its 15th Life Member for his contributions to the Association over the years; and Larry Hayes, Executive Administrator, was (1) named to the BC Hockey 100 List under the "Builders-District Leaders" category, and (2) the recipient of the PCAHA President s Service Award for making a significant contribution to amateur hockey in the Lower Mainland during the preceding year. This is a pretty big deal for the Association and is the result of a lot of hard work over the years. Thank you to everyone for their contributions. The Association is already busy booking ice, planning rust removal and development sessions, securing rep coaches, and planning for everything that comes with the start of the new season. I want to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable summer. August will be here before you know it. If you have considered or are considering volunteering this coming season, please complete the online application form or have a conversation with a coach or manager you know or reach out to the executive member who oversees your child s division. The strength of our association is

completely dependent upon volunteers stepping forward. If you have questions, please ask. Thank you again for your ongoing support for Burnaby Minor Hockey Association. Sincerely, - Lucas BMHA WINS ASSOCIATION OF THE YEAR AWARD Woot Woot!!! For the first time in its storied 54-year history, the Burnaby Minor Hockey Association has been recognized as Association of the Year by the Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey Association, the governing body of forty-four Lower Mainland youth hockey organizations. The Fred Page Memorial Trophy, named after the long-time amateur hockey volunteer, is awarded annually to the Metro Vancouver Minor Hockey Association adjudged to have made an outstanding contribution to its community by providing a sound minor hockey program. The award was presented at the recent Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey Association Annual General Meeting, where it was noted that the BMHA is seeing its registration numbers increasing and that it offers a comprehensive youth hockey program for players ages five to twenty. With fifty-two teams and over eight hundred players hitting the ice during the just concluded 2017/18 season, the BMHA provides an avenue for beginners, with their Junior Bulldogs program, recreational players and representative teams. Their Wildcats program is the girls only arm of the Association and is also seeing their numbers grow. The Burnaby Minor Hockey Association has a number of unique initiatives that recognizes volunteers, on-ice officials and long-time players. Each year they see a number of international transfer players wanting to participate in Canada s Official Winter Sport, from traditional and non-traditional countries such as China, Japan, Lebanon, Iran, Brazil, Ireland, Vietnam, Afghanistan, the USA and others. All are welcome to the BMHA. In addition to this award, outgoing BMHA President and long-time volunteer Darryl Mah was honoured with a Meritorious Service Award for his outstanding contribution to amateur hockey in the Lower Mainland for a period of at least 5 years and administrator Larry Hayes was presented with the President s Service Award for making a significant contribution to amateur hockey in the Lower Mainland during the preceding year. The Fred Page Memorial Trophy Minor Hockey Association of the Year has been presented by the Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey Association since the 1977/78 season. No other minor hockey organization in Burnaby has been recognized with this award in past years.

COACH TALK Message from BMHA s New Head Coach, Peter Chau! For those parents I have not the pleasure of meeting throughout the years, I m Peter Chau. I have been elected to the 2018/19 BMHA Executive Committee as Head Coach, responsible for coaches and hockey development. Thank you for your support and the opportunity for me to help shape the direction of BMHA over the next two years. I want to continue on the great things our past executives have put into place and embrace new opportunities that become available. Like most of you, I am passionate about the game of hockey. Hockey is not just a fantastic team sport, but also a medium to gain life-long friends and positive life lessons along the way. As such, volunteering with BMHA is my way of giving back to this great game. I have been a BMHA volunteer since 2011 coaching both my son and daughter. As with any non-profit organization, BMHA relies heavily on engaged volunteers. I encourage you to volunteer at any capacity and am confident that you will find this rewarding. You need to look no further than the smiles on the kid s faces when they step on the ice! One of the common themes in the recent AGM was for the Executive Committee to be more transparent in its communication and more dialogue with the BMHA membership. As such, I will keep you abreast throughout the year of any news, updates, etc. relating to coaching and development. Please keep an eye on our website for latest information and news throughout the summer months. I welcome all feedback and would encourage such throughout the year. BMHA is our association and you should be proud and have a sense of pride that we are all Bulldogs and Wildcats! Cheers, Peter Chau, BMHA Head Coach ESSO FUN DAY WILDCATS COME TRY HOCKEY Another Successful Event! In early June, the Wildcats hosted another successful Esso Fun Day Come Try Hockey event!

BMHA SUCCESS STORIES Bantam C5 Represents Canada in Portland! Bantam C5 ended its season by winning the Portland Jr. Winterhawks 14U Frozen Rose tournament in March. This was a unique tournament experience, with teams from Washington State, Idaho and different parts of Oregon. Bantam C5 was the only team from Canada in the tournament. Bantam C5 fully took on the spirit of Canada by proudly wearing a Maple Leaf on its jerseys and helmets, as well as singing O Canada before each game. The team gave gifts to each team and on-ice officials in the form of BMHA Toques and City of Burnaby pins, to show their goodwill. The international flavour of the tournament reached its peak in the final on Sunday March 11 with two undefeated teams facing each other at the Winterhawks Skating Center Team USA Tri-City Americans (an all-star house team from Washington State) vs Team Canada Bantam C5. As usual, Bantam C5 proudly sang the national anthem before the game and took its Canadian spirit onto the ice to defeat the Tri-City Americans 4-0 to take home the Banner and the Gold back to Canada! After the final, both teams shook hands and stood together for pictures (see below) to celebrate how much they enjoyed playing each other in the final and to show good sportsmanship. Families had a very memorable experience in Portland and the Parents wanted to especially thank Coaches Rob Ponis, Mat Prasad, Andrew Fox and Adrian Caporale and Manager Tim Walker for putting so much effort into helping the players have such a great experience and memories to last a lifetime. This was a great way to end the bookend season that started with a tournament win in North Vancouver last October when Bantam C5 won every game in the NVMHA Thanksgiving Tournament to take home the Gold!
