HOG RIDER January 2012 Monthly Meetings 2012 January 4 Director s Message February 1 March 7 April 4 May 2 June 6 July 4 August 1 September 5 October 3 November 7 December 5 Inside this issue: Director s Message With picture from the Christmas party Meet the Executive Member s Buy & Sell 1 2 to 5 Rallies 2012 6 Your Executive Upcoming Events 7 As the holiday season is now upon us it truly is a reminder that our riding season has all too quickly come to an end. 2011 was a very busy year for the Chapter with many of our members attending numerous rallies across Canada and the United States. Our Sunday rides were once again accident free. A tribute to the time and dedication taken by our Road Captions to ensure safety is first and foremost a priority for all those attending. The rainy weather early in the year may have slowed some from riding as much as planned but it did not stop our membership from finding ways to get out and enjoy the camaraderie and friendship that abounds within our fellow riding enthusiasts. The movie nights, HOG Olympics & Pig Roast were just some of the non-riding activities enjoyed throughout the year. 2012 Events There are three Canadian rallies that have the interest of our members so far. The Prairie Regional will be held in Saskatoon in July and we will be attending with the intent of winning the Chapter Challenge. More details will follow as to who will be leading the ride out to Saskatoon. We will be planning some Bike Game training once riding season commences so that we will have a well trained contingent in attendance. I encourage our membership to put forward any other rally plans they may have as there are many good rallies within one or two days of Calgary. The Solstice ride will be moved to Saturday June 23 rd so that we can get more people out for the all day portion of the ride. Executive Member Changes We have three members leaving the executive who have put a great deal of time and energy into the Chapter for many years. Jan Pedlar is stepping down as director, Jim Pedlar is departing as Membership Officer and Lynne Punt has completed her time as Activity Coordinator. Thank you to Jan, Jim & Lynne for your many hours of service to the Chapter. Sandi Kerr will be moving from Activities Coordinator to Membership Officer. Thank you to Sandi for the past two years in the Activities position. Brian Richmond moves from Secretary to Assistant Director. Diane Wild will be Secretary/Treasurer. Tim Taylor has agreed to a dual role as Safety Officer/Road Captain. New to the Executive this year are Carol Lewis & Maggie Ranta who will be our Activities Coordinators for the next two years. As your new Director, I am looking forward to working with the new executive and an exciting year of riding in 2012. Meet our Executive Jim Kerr ; Director Age: 55 happily married for 31 years to Sandi and we have 2 adult sons. First ride on a Harley was in Maui February 2004. Been hooked on riding ever since. Joined the Calgary Chapter in 2009. Current rides are a 2007 Road King and a 2011 Road Glide. Diane Wild ; Treasurer After crossing off another bucket list item - a motorcycle trip to St. John's NFLD this year, Wayne and I look forward to doing 3 trips overseas on H-Ds in the next few years! Really enjoy the Calgary H.O.G. Chapter for the rides and friendships! See you at the Rallies in 2012 riding my 2010 Softail Deluxe or my 2012 Forty Eight! Brian Richmond ; Assistant Director I've been riding for 24 yrs now. Started out on a Yamaha 800, 2-stoke motorcycle, which I rode 12 months of the year. Mainly because it was what I could afford and it was easy to park at the University of New York between the cars on campus. My father got me interested in motorcycling when I was 7, having numerous bikes through the years. I was lucky enough to get my first Harley in Feb 2007, a Blues Brothers Blue 2-tone Heritage Motorcycle and join the Calgary Chapter. Now a bit older, I've been fortunate to have had the chance to enjoy a few rides and rallies with my Dad before he puts up the kick stand for the 1 last time, and soon I'll be seen riding with my son... Keeping the family tradition going... H.O.G. Olympics, November 2011 Carol Lewis ; Activities Officer I would consider myself a late bloomer as far as motorcycle riding is concerned. My first rides on a Harley was in 2007 and have accompanied my husband Greg on many rides and rally s including the 105 th in Milwaukie, Medicine Hat, Billings MT and Langford, BC. I am looking forward to the 2012 riding season and the rally in Saskatoon. Maggie Ranta ; Activities Officer When my husband Allen got his first "Harley" my adult son told him "You will never get Mom on that". He was wrong! I love it and have ridden on the back to many beautiful places throughout Canada and western USA. Joining the Calgary Chapter allows us to enjoy our riding adventures with great new friends.
Executive cont d Georgina Manson ; Ladies of Harley Well last summer was a great riding season for me..logged over 15,000km. The 2012 summer will be my official 5 th year of riding. A fair newbie compared to most in the Chapter and going into the second year being the co-loh officer (with much help from Pam Stewart). Last summer I officially gained my Road Captain status. Am proud to be a female road captain in the Chapter may provide some comfort for some of our Lady Riders this summer on some Sunday and LOH Rides. I believe that my professional career as a corporate Health, Safety and Environment Advisor for a large O&G Corporation, has lent to my abilities to ensure the safety and wellbeing of riders who ride with me. One last thought.remember..life is too short.. LET S RIDE! Pam Stewart ; Co-Officer LOH After my husband bought a HD in 2005, I decided it might be smart if I learned to ride - and I haven't looked back since. HOG and LOH have introduced me to great people, fun events and helped me become a better rider. Tim Taylor ; Safety Officer Tim Taylor has been riding for over 25 years, has a colourful character personality and a strong passion for riding, Safety is number one on every ride he participates in or leads. Bowling 2011 Bruce Stewart ; Photographer HOG History: Life member, Calgary chapter members since 2005, Assist. Dir. 06/07, Dir. 08/09 Current ride: 2005 Heritage Classic Sandy Kerr ; Membership Officer For the past 2 years I have enjoyed being part of the committee. Working with Lynn Punt on activities has been fun and filled with laughs. I am looking forward to the next term as Membership Officer which will allow me to meet more members and connect faces to names.
Executive cont d Road Captains Robert McIntosh Ron Hyde Born and raised on farm near small town Manitoba. After school, left the farm life and eventually moved to Alberta, eventually settling in Calgary where married and had 2 great kids (girl and later a boy). Worked for City of Calgary until retirement but in between got a divorce had the awesome experience of doing the Mr Mom thing for both kids at one point or another before they moved on with their chosen partners. Work ignited a passion for motorcycles in that was able to ride Harleys and even get paid for it. That passion was instrumental in getting my first MC, an older Ultra Classic, which was later swapped for a newer Ultra Classic which I still ride today. In life found being involved had some pleasant rewards so I am involved in several motorcycle& car clubs, shows, groups, dance classes, etc. Plus my retirement just led to another opportunity. And with that A 1 Traffic Ticket Defense was born- a business of helping people with their traffic ticket woes. I have been a HOG member since 2007 when I purchased my first Harley. Five years and two bikes later I can tell you that Harley is in my blood. I have been riding and repairing motorbikes since I was 16 years old. By trade I am a licensed automotive tech and worked for Ford Canada for 24 years. I'm also certified in small engine and marine motor repair. I have enjoyed the many friendships that I have made with the members of the HOG group and look forward to the Sunday rides and event rides where I have been Road Captain for the past four years. I look forward to meeting up with our members for next year s rides and welcome any new HOG members. Here is our Official Calgary Harley Owners Group tartan which is registered in Scotland. As you can see on the front page, we are quite enthused about it. Bob Punt I got my m/c license in 1968 and did a lot of offroad and street riding and competed in Trials events until my early 20's. I still own my TY250 Trials bike I purchased new in 1974 and rode it until the late '90s. In the fall of 2007 I retired and traded in a '98 1200 Virago towards an '08 Ultra. I became a HOG Chapter member immediately and have put on almost 100,000 kms since purchasing this bike. I have had a bike, of one type or another, for more than 40 years and have been an active Road Captain with this Chapter for the past several years.
