game information www.cakesbaseball.com @cakesbaseball Thursday, June 8, 2017 Shrine on Airline Metairie, LA THE BABY CAKES The Baby Cakes conclude a four-game set tonight against the Memphis Redbirds. New Orleans had dropped five of six meetings with Memphis to open the season series before winning each of the last two, only the second time this year the Cakes have won back-toback home games (May 2 & 4). A victory tonight would give the Baby Cakes their second three-game winning streak of 2017 (May 22-25). YESTERDAY S NEWS Chad Hinshaw s two-out, two-run homer in the eighth inning rallied the Baby Cakes past Memphis, 5-4. The lead traded hands for the fourth and final time when KC Serna reached on a bunt single to extend the eighth, and Hinshaw sent his first Triple-A home run over the left field fence to provide the decisive blow. The teams were scoreless until the fourth, when Destin Hood roped a single and scored on Cal Towey s two-out liner to center. Memphis answered in the top of the fifth by capitalizing on a pair of Cakes errors to grab a 2-1 lead. Hood s two-run homer in the sixth put New Orleans back in front, only for the Redbirds to respond on Patrick Wisdom s two-run blast in the seventh. Victor Payano got the win by pitching a scoreless eighth inning, and Drew Steckenrider worked around a leadoff single in the ninth to secure his third save. ON THE HILL Stephen Fife gets the nod for his team-leading 12th start of the season. He took the loss on Saturday in Round Rock, yielding four runs and seven hits in 5.0 innings to snap a three-game winning streak. He had worked 6.0 frames in each of his previous five assignments, posing a 2.40 ERA (8 ER/30.0 IP). Fife is unbeaten in five starts at the Shrine, going 3-0 with a 3.46 ERA, including his season debut on April 10 vs. Memphis when he gave up five runs and eight hits in 5.0 innings and did not factor into the decision. He is 0-1 with a 8.46 ERA in three career starts against the Redbirds. new orleans baby cakes (21-37) vs. Memphis redbirds (35-24) RHP Stephen Fife (4-3, 4.14) vs. RHP Jack Flaherty (0-0, 3.00) On This Date... 2007: NOLA sets a new club record by scoring 18 runs in an 18-8 win at Iowa. Chip Ambres goes 3x5 with a three-run homer in the first and scores three times, and Andy Tracy caps the outburst with a ninth-inning grand slam. They would top their record the following night by pounding the Cubs, 19-4. UNDER THE HOOD Destin Hood has a hit in 10 of his last 12 games, batting.357 (15x42) in that span with six home runs and 16 RBI. He is tied for fifth in the PCL with 14 dingers and tied for seventh in the league with 41 RBI. Hood is just one home run shy of his career-best total, set with New Orleans last season, and becoming the 12th player to reach 30 career homers with the club. Dating back to May 13, Hood is riding a 10- game hit streak in road games, hitting.429 (15x35) with 16 RBI. THE LONELIEST NUMBER NOLA snapped a five-game losing streak in one-run games dating back to a 1-0, 10-inning victory at Tacoma on May 6. The Cakes are 3-9 in one-run contests, tied with Nashville for the worst mark in the PCL, after pacing the circuit with a 25-15 record in 2016. WE LIKE MIKE Mike Aviles has hit safely in 10 of 13 contests since returning from a stint with the Marlins, picking up two doubles, a triple and five RBI while hitting.318 (14x44). He has a hit in all eight of his games at the Shrine, where he is batting.440 (11x25). WHAT A RELIEF Drew Steckenrider improved to 10x11 in career save opportunities with New Orleans over the last two seasons. Steckenrider has held the opposition to a.140 average (13x93) this year, second-best among PCL relievers to Memphis John Brebbia (.127), and his 10.87 strikeouts per 9.0 IP ranks fifth. In 11 appearances at home, he has worked 16.1 scoreless innings with 23 strikeouts and opponents are hitting.077 (4x52). BARNYARD Brandon Barnes has hit safely in 10 of his last 12 games, batting.294 (15x51), on the heels of going hitless in 16 at-bats over his prior six contests. Barnes has recorded a hit in five of six games vs. Memphis this season, going 7x25. SHALL NOT PASS Baby Cakes catchers have combined to throw out 26x53 baserunners this season, a 49.1% rate which is second-best in the PCL to Colorado Springs (52.5%). New Orleans backstops gunned down 30.9% of runners last year. Tomas Telis has thrown out 54.2% (13x24), which would lead all PCL catchers if he had enough innings to qualify. GETTING LATE EARLY Through the first three innings, the Cakes have been outscored by a combined 110-69. The Baby Cakes have also been outscored 34-11 in the ninth inning, their largest deficit of any frame. IN A PINCH Moises Sierra came off the bench to deliver a pinch single yesterday, his second hit in five pinch hitting appearances. Baby Cakes pinch hitters are 10x38 (.263) with five walks, a home run and six RBI. 7:00 p.m. CT Game #59 Home Game #32 cakes corner Current Streak...W2 Home... 12-19 Streak...W2 Road... 9-18 Streak...W1 Last 10... 4-6 vs. RHP (starter)... 17-30 vs. LHP (starter)... 4-7 vs. Division... 4-12 vs. American Conference... 16-26 vs. Pacific Conference... 5-11 vs. NL Affiliates... 15-21 vs. AL Affiliates... 6-16 Day... 5-12 Night... 16-25 Extra Innings... 2-3 Shutouts... 3-3 One-Run Games... 3-9 Score 5+ Runs... 16-8 Scoring First... 14-10 Opponent Scores First... 7-27 Commit Error... 10-22 Hit Home Run... 17-14 Quality Start... 11-5 Outhit Opponent... 14-7 Leading After 6... 18-3 Trailing After 6... 0-30 Leading After 7... 18-2 Trailing After 7... 1-33 Leading After 8... 18-3 Trailing After 8... 0-30 Series Record...0-8-6 Series Openers... 8-7 Series Finales... 5-9 Doubleheader Games... 1-1 Sweep/Swept/Split...0/0/1 Come From Behind Wins... 7 Bat Around For/Against...3/8 Longest Win Streak... 3 Longest Lose Streak... 5 High Water Mark...+0 Low Water Mark... -18 White Jersey... 10-12 Grey Jersey... 6-14 Blue Jersey... 5-11 Throwback Jersey... 0-0 Misc. Their 14-series drought without a win (0-8-6) is the longest to begin a season in franchise history. The 2004 club went seven series - losing four and splitting three - to open the campaign. NOLA is 5-9 in series finales. A CALL TO ARMS Chris O Grady turned in his first quality start of the year while establishing season bests of 6.0 innings pitched and seven strikeouts. O Grady lowered his ERA in four home starts to 2.65 (5 ER/ 17.0 IP). The Cakes improved to 11-5 when receiving a quality start. THE BALLOT BOX In the latest update of the Triple-A All-Star fan voting released today, a pair of Baby Cakes teammates are leading the way at their respective positions. Steve Lombardozzi is the top vote-getter among PCL second basemen, while Drew Steckenrider is on top among relief pitchers. Matt Juengel ranks second in the voting at first base, as does Scott Copeland for starting pitchers. MAGIC NUMBER The Baby Cakes improved to 18-3 when leading through six innings. Meanwhile, NOLA is 0-30 when trailing after six frames, the only winless club in the league. MR. MAY The Miami Marlins have named Drew Steckenrider the organization s Minor League Pitcher of the Month for May. Steckenrider charted a 0.82 ERA in eight May appearances, limiting opponents to a.139 batting average (5x36) while striking out 14 and walking only two in 11.0 innings. NAWLINS NOTES The Baby Cakes recorded their first win in 34 tries when trailing after seven innings... New Orleans improved to 16-8 when scoring at least five runs... Nick Noonan became the ninth different Baby Cake to bat leadoff, five of which have come in the last 23 games. Noonan is 0x16 over his last five contests and 2x29 over his last nine... It was the first time Fife won three starts in a row since June 7-19, 2011 while pitching for AA Portland. He posted a 1.50 ERA (3 ER/18.0 IP) during the winning streak, while holding opponents to a.231 batting average (15x65). CENTURY MARK Fife gave up only a pair of unearned runs in 6.0 innings to defeat Salt Lake on 5/18. He made 102 pitches, the first time he reached the century mark since his last MLB start on 5/4/14 against the Marlins. THAT S QUALITY Despite pitching on short rest and taking the loss on 5/8 at Tacoma, Fife turned in his first quality start since July 8, 2014 by limiting the Rainiers to five hits and two runs (one earned) in 6.0 innings. Fife had not completed 6.0 innings since that 2014 quality start while with Albuquerque. LEFTOVERS Through his first five outings, Fife yielded a.576 batting average (19x33) to left-handed hitters. Overall, the opposition was batting.381 (40x105), the highest mark among PCL starters. WINNER WINNER With 5.0 scoreless frames on 4/22 vs. Omaha, Fife earned his first victory in nearly three years. His last win came on on June 27, 2014 vs. Reno, as he made just three more starts before undergoing Tommy John surgery. INDECISIVE Fife did not factor into the decision in either of his first two starts on 4/10 vs. Memphis and 4/17 at Omaha. He allowed a combined eight runs in 9.2 innings, with opponents batting.386 (17x44), but limited the damage by yielding a.167 average (3x18) with runners in scoring position. MAY DAYS The month of May saw Fife go 3-1 with a 3.18 ERA in six starts. From May 18-28, Fife earned three straight victories and in those games he did not allow more than two runs. He struck out 24 batters compared to 19 in the month of April while opponents were batting.279 against Fife. 2016 in review WITH IOWA Due to injury, Fife was limited to seven starts for the Iowa Cubs. In his season debut vs. Round Rock, he was roughed up in three innings, giving up four earned runs. However, he bounced back in his second start on 4/13 limiting New Orleans to two hits in 4.1 scoreless innings before leaving with a right side strain. After spending six weeks on the disabled list, Fife worked 4.0 shutout frames with five strikeouts and two hits vs. El Paso on 5/23. ON THE DL After his start on 5/23 vs. El Paso, Fife was placed on the disabled list on 5/24 and missed nearly three months of the season. 2017 season W-L ERA G IP H R ER BB K 4-3 4.14 11 58.2 73 31 27 18 45 Home Games: Away Games: Day Games: Night Games: vs. Left-handers: vs. Right-handers: April: May: June: July: August/September: 2017 splits (aaa) 3-0, 3.46 ERA 1-3, 4.68 ERA 0-0, 5.79 ERA 4-3, 4.00 ERA.396 (42x106), 1 HR, 9 BB, 17 K.240 (31x129), 3 HR, 9 BB, 28 K 1-1, 5.03 ERA 3-1, 3.18 ERA 0-1, 7.20 ERA 0-0, 0.00 ERA 0-0, 0.00 ERA 2017 highs/lows (aaa) Innings: 6.0 Five times (recent: 5/28 vs OKC) Most Hits Allowed: 10 5/4 vs. Iowa Least Hits Allowed: 2 5/28 vs. Oklahoma City Most ER Allowed: 5 4/10 vs. Memphis Least ER Allowed: 0 4/22 vs. Omaha and 5/18 vs. Salt Lake Strikeouts: 6 4/22 vs. Omaha and 5/23 at COS Walks: 3 5/28 vs. OKC and 6/3 at RR Homers Allowed: 1 Four times (recent: 6/3 at RR) Winning Streak: W3 5/18-5/28 Losing Streak: L2 4/28-5/8 Shortest Start: 4.0 5/4 vs. Iowa Pitches Thrown: 102 5/18 vs. Salt Lake last time (AAA) Win: 5/28/17 vs. Oklahoma City Loss: 6/3/17 at Round Rock Quality Start: 5/28/17 vs. Oklahoma City Complete Game: - Shutout: - career vs. opponent W-L ERA G IP H R ER BB K 0-1 8.56 3 13.2 19 13 9 4 11 day-by-day starts DATE OPP.
