The Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA) will be conducting surveillance testing for Avian Influenza (AI) at county fairs in 2017. The testing of poultry exhibited at county fairs is a vital part of the surveillance program in Nebraska. Your cooperation and participation is always greatly appreciated. * NDA s AI testing protocol involves sampling a maximum of five birds from each exhibitor using a tracheal swab. With this method of testing, a bird is removed from the cage and held with its head up, with the wings restrained. The tester then opens the mouth and inserts a swab over the tongue into the trachea. The swabbing procedure does not harm the birds. FAIR ENTRY TAGS Be ready. Be prepared. Get your Animal and Static Entry tags for the Harlan County Fair. 2017 State Fair Livestock Fees From the desk of Kathleen Lodl - Associate Dean/4-H Program Administrator On December 9, the Nebraska State Fairboard voted to add a bedding fee onto the entry fee for ALL LIVESTOCK EXHIBITORS; the fee will be $15 for beef and dairy and $5 for sheep, goats, and swine. The Fairboard also voted to add a $3 per head fee for 4-H & FFA market animals to help defray the costs of drug testing. These costs are in addition to the existing entry fees that will stay the same for 2017. The Nebraska State Fair continues to be supportive of FFA and 4-H and values all that youth and families bring the Fair; however, escalating costs for bedding, bedding removal, etc. have forced them to reassess their fees. 2017 STATE FAIR ANNOUNCEMENTS PREMISE ID NUMBERS FOR 2017 From the desk of Brad Bennett - Extension Educator, Livestock Judging Coach All State Fair and/or AKSARBEN Livestock exhibitors are required to obtain a Premise ID for 2017.
