May 2010 Issue Remarks Mark E. Walker, Regional Executive H E L P! You ve heard me many times in past columns talk about how we need help in this area or that area. Well, it s getting critical. We have no Activities Director to oversee the local programs. We have no Timing & Scoring Chief for Solo, no Registration Chief for Solo, can t get eventmasters for the Solo s or the RallyCrosses. We ve asked at the drivers meetings, on the forums, in emails sent to people on the sign-up lists, and person to person. We have had no success. At the Board meeting last Wednesday, we decided to try one last thing before we start cancelling events due to lack of people stepping up to help YOUR club. We are going to give a free entry at the Solos to the people who Chief the following positions: Tech, Registration, Timing & Scoring, Waivers, Event Master, Course Designer, and Safety Steward. The free entry is for the event in question. The same person can perform the duties of a particular position, or it can rotate between people. You have to be qualified to perform the position. You can t just step in and say I d like to be the T&S Chief unless you know everything that s involved, or have been trained by someone who has that designation already. Now, you may have already noticed that the Event Master and Course Designer position have been split officially. That doesn t preclude someone from performing both at the same time if you wish, but it doesn t have to be that way. If you are doing both, you only get one free entry. Inside this Issue... Remarks 1 General and Contact Information 2 Schedule of Events 3 Land O Lakes Club Race 4 Safety Recalls 5 New RallyCross Site 5 The idea behind this is to spread out the work between people so NOBODY has to work very hard. Now I have to say that I ve been preaching this for the past year and a half and it hasn t done any good. I don t have any hope at all that this will work any better. Prove me wrong. I dare you. The alternative is bleak. If we don t have people start stepping up, WE WILL START CANCELLING EVENTS. That would be a shame if the region that had what is called the best solo site in the whole country had to cancel events because we can t get people to step up and help. We will have job descriptions for all these positions posted on the web site VERY SOON. They are currently listed in this months newsletter (pages 6 7). They will also be emailed to everyone on the notification system. They will be posted on the timing and scoring bus at the events, and we will talk about this at each and every drivers meeting this year. I don t know how else to reinforce this but to repeat it in no-nonsense terms. If people don t start helping, we WILL start cancelling events. Sigh.. Yours, for the sport. Mark E. LoL Reg/Reg Racing at Brainerd Raceway New RallyCross Site - I-80 Speedway! You re Invited to Join Us for a Fantastic Fourth of July What are you plans for the July 4 th weekend? My plans are to take in a Minnesota Twins Game at the new Target Field on Thursday evening, then head up to Brainerd International Raceway (BIR) on Friday morning for the return of SCCA Club Racing to Land o Lakes region. My name is Carrie Carlson and I am a Land o Lakes region board member and incredibly excited for the first SCCA Club Race on BIR s new 2.5 mile course. I would like to personally extend an invitation to you on behalf of our region to join us. You are probably asking yourself, Why should I go to an event all the way in Brainerd, Minnesota? I don t blame you for wondering. We have a dedicated group of volunteers who are working hard to make this the best event ever not just for drivers but also for volunteers. For drivers, we are offering you the opportunity to run four races with just one tow. We are working on some great perks for our volunteers, as well, including free camping at the track (hook ups not included). Our race organizers are promising an unforgettable event for everyone. In addition to the SCCA Club Race (as if you need more than that), there will be Show & Go drag racing running concurrently with our event (and into the evening). A Classic Car will take place throughout the weekend. Fireworks are planned for the evening and the track has a live band scheduled to perform (in one of the main buildings). The Brainerd Lakes Area is a premier vacation destination for many. Bring your family and stay a while. Enjoy some of Minnesota s 10,000 lakes; rumor has it the fish will be biting. Fantastic shopping, site seeing, water parks, fishing and golfing at some of the nation s finest courses are just a taste of what you can enjoy in our neck of the woods; not to mention a great SCCA Club Racing event. Make sure you make your hotel reservations soon if you don t plan on camping at the track. If you have any questions or would like more information on our fantastic Fourth of July getaway check out our website www.scca -lol.org or contact me, Carrie Carlso n at ccarlsondds@comcast.net or our race chair, Kathy Gillen at Kathy@gillengroup.com. Nebraska Region has a new RallyCross Venue. Jerry Doctor, Mark Walker, James Phillips, Christy Carlson and Matthew Cox met with Donnie Jones, General Manager and Ed Kosiski, of I-80 Speedway on Friday, May 14th. The meeting went very well and Nebraska Region has struck a deal to hold RallyCross events on the I-80 Speedway property. There are three large areas available. The one we will be using initially is about 10 acres in size. The surface is grass covered and amazingly smooth. There are restroom and shower facilities on site as well as dry camping available at no charge. There is also a kitchen available if we need it for various special events. Right now, we are scheduling a make-up RallyCross event for June 6th, 2010 on the new site to check it out. This is probably the smoothest, largest site I ve seen and we re only using one of three areas available to us. You can find a panorama shot of the site at http://www.dvti.com/ i80speedway.html. Stay tuned on the forums and via the sign up lists for more information. Here s the Google Earth representation of the site we re planning on using. The area highlighted on the bottom left corner is what we are starting with. The other two areas on the right are also available. Page 4

Safety First Attention all club racing drivers! SFI Press Release concerning Impact Racing Article Provided by Chris Safranek Notification was recently sent to SCCA Drivers informing them of the action taken by SFI to decertify some products manufactured by Impact Racing, LLC. From the SFI Press Release of April 21, 2010: Impact Racing has withdrawn its appeal of the decertification of its products bearing SFI 3.2A, 3.3, 16.1, and 16.5 specifications manufactured in the years 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008. The decertification of these products are now permanent. It is our responsibility to inform our drivers of the action SFI has taken and the driver s responsibility to be compliant. Please post the attached Racing Memo prominently in Registration and Tech for the next couple of your events to ensure our drivers are aware of the decertification. For tech and steward personnel involved in safety inspections, please follow these instructions. Tech activities should be conducted as usual. No special activities are needed to address the situation. Photo of the Month Here is John LaRandeau driving through puddles (lakes) at Neosho on April 24th-25th. John ended up taking first place in DS. Congratulations John! *If you want to see your car here, send a picture and description to editor@nscca.com. Best photo sent will appear in the newsletter* From the Editor Hello all! Well, my first newsletter only had two typos in it. I am very proud of myself because one of them is a typo that has been in the newsletter for quite some time now, so it wasn t even my fault. Yeah! Go me. Try to see if you can find them. And what do you get for finding last months typos? The satisfaction that you found last months typos. Well, there s nothing new to report as far as the newsletter goes, but I would like to remind everyone that if they have a business or know of another member that has a business that can help other SCCA members, feel free to send me an email about what the business does and contact information. I will be more than happy to try to help support our own in the Exhaust Notes any time I can. Best wishes to all, Mikaela Walker editor@nrscca.com Page 10
