1 PITBOARD October SBR SCCA Road Rally Report 2013 Leon Krauss Rally Master Duane Belisle, in dark shirt and khaki shorts, goes over the instructions before the Rally begins. Sunday, September 15, 2013 Seven teams showed up at Tire Rack to begin the adventure of a lifetime by participating in the third SBR Road Rally of the modern era. The rally had two major components; one required following route instructions (therefore no males were allowed to be driving) and two; answering 12 trivia questions taken off the back of Captain Crunch cereal boxes! The questions determined which direction to turn at specific intersections which would probably explain why we have never heard from 5 of the 7 cars ever again!! And these were the simpler questions. The more difficult questions we just ignored (since we were lost anyways) and once we found we were driving around the backside of Dowagiac s Four Winds Casino, we thought we might as well cash in some of the rally points we had earned (which was exactly zero). The official rally length was 80.6 miles. Some of us contested that at the 313 mile marker point. Jeff and Dawn Luckritz drove exactly 80.6 miles-did not follow any of the directions (Dawn, I told you not to let Jeff drive!) threw away all the questions and drove directly to Beef O Brady s where Jeff called the rest of us to give up because we could never beat him and just drive back to the restaurant so he could gloat in our faces. All teams did receive a $20 gift certificate for dining at the restaurant, so at the very least, everyone ate well. Jeff had to leave early, though, so he could go home and polish his First Place Trophy. The rally route started in St. Joseph County and went into Berrien and Cass Counties, but the rally organizers forgot to photo-j.luckritz tell us those counties were in Michigan!!! Actually, the rally went very well until one of the organizers caught the Luckritz team pulling the marker stakes out of the ground and placing them in their trunk! If anyone sees a dark blue Volkswagen Jetta with Indiana plates driving very slowly by every county intersection in southwest Michigan, would you please stop them and inform them the rally is over with! Thanks goes out to Duane Belisle for putting the rally together for us (next time Duane, don t tell Luckritz what the marker stakes look like). We all had a blast even though my wife has learned I know nothing about trivia! If you did not participate than you need to come out for the next rally and get lost with the rest of us. Maybe we can find a winery together to sooth our damaged egos! 1

7 photo-l.loring SBR Karting Fun! On a sunny October 1 st, 23 SBR members headed out to Michiana Raceway Park to test their skills in Jet Karting s rental karts. The annual event has been held for five years or so and this is the second year the event was run as an enduro. Anticipation was in the air as each driver signed the waiver and weighed in (the scale was reading 8 pounds high). While the karters gathered up their helmets, karting jackets, gloves, and neck collars, I formed teams by pairing up the heavy guys (like me) with the light guys (Steve Jackson). The owner, Andy went through the format of the day, talked about safety stuff and ontrack behavior. On more than one occasion he mentioned he really likes our group of guys. I agreed every time. After two ten-minute practice sessions, the teams lined up for the 40-minute endurance race which required one driver change. For some reason, Duane Belisle and his co-karter Jason Nichols, decided to make more driver changes than everybody else. That theory didn t work so well as you can see from the results below. As the sun set beneath the trees and the clock wound down to zero, the team of Adam Locsi and Brian Tack took the checkered flag well ahead of the competition. Good times were had by all. Pos. But for this amateur race driver, it was a very big deal. Ever since I ve had this 1999 Miata in SSB race trim I ve always been a sort of second-tier competitor. I d head to each race hoping to be in the top third of the field, but never really expecting to win unless the stars were aligned and better drivers had mechanical problems. At tracks like GingerMan and Mid Ohio where driver skill and handling was important I would do pretty well. But at a big horsepower tracks like Road America and Michigan International Speedway I wouldn t have the horsepower to keep up. That all changed in September. Runoffs week started on Monday, September 16th. Due to my work schedule I couldn t leave for Road America until Monday after work. I took a little detour and headed to a race prep shop at Autobahn in Joliet on Monday afternoon for a little dyno tuning. Lucky for me these guys had some experience tuning Spec Miatas. I arrived about 3:30 pm, they hooked up the car to the dyno and 12 dyno pulls later they found 6 horsepower. In a class where the top cars have 129 hp, 6 hp is huge. Needless to say, I was pretty optimistic as I made the tow up to Road America Monday evening for the 50th running of the event. Qualifying was Tuesday through Thursday. Tuesday was cool and the conditions were perfect. Instead of heading back to St. Joe to work like I ve done every other year, I decided to stick around for the other qualifying sessions. One day it rained, the next day it was hot an humid. Figures. Using Tuesday s time, I ended up qualifying 28th out of 70 cars. Not bad for a guy who works on his own car, tows with a 13 year old truck, preps his own food, sleeps in the trailer, and has to answer to his wife for race expenses. Come race day on Friday the plan was to break into the top 20 and not wreck the car. As the green flag fell, the inside row(my row) motored by the outside row and I was up to 20th BEFORE the starter stand and 16th by the end of lap one. I managed to pick the fast line into most of the corners and didn t get held up by slower cars. More importantly, I was able to avoid spinning cars, flying tires, and cars going backwards along the wall at 100 mph. On the last lap I got bump-drafted by the 12th place car and finished 10th. Rod called me on my cell phone on the cool-down lap, buddies high-fived me and other competitors were genuinely happy for this low-budget, work on his own car racer. Best finish ever for me at the SCCA Runoffs! 15th STR John Woody Rogers 16th RTR Steven Ruschak 20th STS Andrew Peppler 22nd STR Chris Harvey 29th ESP Dave Gushwa 42nd RTR Kevin Horecky 7
