Commodore s Corner The pay your dues party took place a few weeks ago, and it was a great event to cap 2018 off! It took place at Queen City Yacht Club, and included a prime rib and salmon dinner and an evening of dancing. Between dinner and dancing was a very entertaining live auction. It was great to see Past Commodore Tony Johnson and Marcia Bailey, who haven t been able to attend an event in many years. After the event, the HHYC board voted to donate $500 to the Health Link charity to help those less fortunate during this holiday season. I do have some sad news to share. Member Glen Diefenderfer lost his battle with cancer last month. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jill during this difficult time. As my year as commodore comes to a close (was that cheering I heard?) I ve been reflecting on my time in the chair. What I saw as a daunting task ended up being very fulfilling, and not nearly as difficult as I foresaw. Much thanks to the 2018 board members for your thoughtful leadership this year. After many years of discussions about the cost of dues, this board had the wisdom to move us forward in the area of greatest concern. The result is that the annual dues are still set at $100, but new members will pay an extra $50 initiation fee to cover the club s additional cost of a new burgee and other administrative items. We also had several awesome events that were very well attended. Much thanks go out to the year s event hosts who made the events possible. The year started with the Commodore s Ball hosted by P/C Mary & Brian Scott; followed by the Garlic Fest hosted by P/C Dane & Terry Fantz with Paul and Liz Ellis; then it was the Bacon Bash hosted by P/C Paul Quinn & Patty Cossack with F/C Rick & Sharon Lee; on to the Memorial Day Rendezvous hosted by PC Dennis Kroeger & Brynn Sheridan; that lead to the Rock the Dock event hosted by myself & Kari with P/C Mike & Sue Burke; followed by the Crab Derby planned by V/C Larry & Keli Parrett and hosted by P/C Mike & Sue Burke; and finally the Pay Your Dues party hosted by P/C Paul Quinn & Patty Cossack. For those of you who didn t make it to any of the year s events, we truly hope to see you some time in 2019! I d also like to welcome the ten new member families to HHYC! This is a great group of people, and we look forward to seeing you in the near future! Finally, I d like to welcome the 2019 HHYC Bridge, Commodore Larry Parrett, Vice Commodore Jeff Quinn, and newly elected Rear Commodore Bart Kooyman. I m confident that our new leaders will keep us moving in the right direction! I encourage all of you to help me welcome the new bridge by attending the Commodore s Ball on January 26. Warmest Regards Vic Portolese, outgoing Commodore 2
