First motor cycle late 1960 Newsletter Story - Michael Church Motorcycling History Yamaha trail bike RT 1A 360. A beast of a bike. It used to break the soles of boots on kick back and once broke the back of the crankcase. Suzuki TS 250J trail bike. This had an aftermarket kit. Chamber, different ported barrel and a bigger carburetter. No muffler and off we went racing. Being the early 1970 s the motor cycle track at Pt. Lincoln was opposite the horse racing track and 100 yards from the land owners house. No EPA in those days. Noise restrictions were starting to be enforced so we drilled the stinger and placed a metal cover over the stinger filled with fibreglass. In those days in Pt. Lincoln we used to ride the MX bikes on the road as most were registered with the lights removed. Lots of dirt roads and tracks in the sand hills. From time to time inspected by the police, but, a different era. Then came proper race production bikes. CZ 125 purchased from Dave Basham Motorcycles Suzuki TM 125 1974. Racing ceased, married, family no money. RM 125S frame with a TS 185 motor (ported) with a chamber, lights, registered. A Peter Koesling special. Used as a commuter during the week. PE 250 1980 model. We were allowed to ride at places like Kersbrook forest on the fire tracks. Yamaha RD 250 LC 1980. A commuter from home in Lobethal to work in the city. Naked first then a top bikini fairing. Yamaha RZ 500 L 1984. Handed down to the next generation of the Church family Present Suzuki GSXR 750 1998. Memorable experiences. Racing at Pt. Pirie in the early 1970 s in the era of the first Honda CR 250 Elsinores. Tord Sahlburg passed me in mid air and he crashed and was killed. The world championship riders coming to Adelaide and seeing Roger DeCosta, Joel Robert etc at Silver Springs at Mylor. A year later I think, seeing Gaston Rahier and world riders at Clarendon motocross track. Seeing Shane Church win his South Australian Dirt Track title.
