game information www.cakesbaseball.com @cakesbaseball Monday, June 25 Shrine on Airline Metairie, LA THE BABY CAKES The New Orleans Baby Cakes begin their longest homestand of the season, playing 10 games in nine days, with tonight s opener of a four-game series against the Iowa Cubs. NOLA dropped four of five in Des Moines from May 25-29, including three straight one-run setbacks before salving the series finale. The Cakes are resuming a stretch of playing 17 of 21 games at home leading up to July 4th. YESTERDAY S NEWS The Baby Cakes allowed 11 runs and 15 hits in an 11-5 loss to the Memphis Redbirds. Rangel Ravelo was 4x4 with a home run, four RBI and was a double away from hitting for the cycle for the second time in the series. The Redbirds racked up three runs in the third inning, headlined by a two-run shot from Ravelo off Cakes starter Dillon Peters, who began the game with two solid innings before allowing four runs in the third and fourth innings. Peters was replaced by Mike Kickham, who let one of his two inherited runners score. The Baby Cakes responded through Cristhian Adames sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth, but the Redbirds added on four more runs over the next two innings to put the game out of reach. Redbirds starter Kevin Herget worked 6.0 one-run innings, striking out seven without a walk. Tomas Telis ripped a three-run shot in the eighth and Adames added a solo home run to bring the defecit to bring the Cakes within 7-5, but the Redbirds responded with four in the bottom half to put the game away. ON THE HILL Tyler Cloyd takes the mound in his fifth start for the Baby Cakes. Cloyd recorded his first win against Sacramento last Monday, his only start at the Shrine, yielding two runs in 5.0 innings. Cloyd has pitched in seven games out of the Marlins bullpen across a pair of stints this season, posting a 8.66 ERA (17 ER/17.2 IP). Cloyd picked up his first quality start of the season against Iowa on May 28, throwing 6.0 scoreless innings and recording four strikeouts, but did not factor into the decision. DEAN OF HITS Austin Dean has hit safely in 17 of his last 19 games, batting.324 (25x77). Dean owns a.344 average overall between NOLA and AA Jacksonville, ranking 13th in all of Minor League Baseball, after hitting.420 (34x81) in 22 games at Double-A to be named April s Southern League Player of the Month, pacing the circuit in batting average, hits, total bases (53), slugging (.654) and OPS (1.120). Dean is batting.345 (37x107) in 26 games for the Cakes since moving into the leadoff spot. New Orleans is 16-8 when Dean starts in left field, and 13-13 when he leads off. HOT SOUP Over his last 50 games, dating to April 26, Eric Campbell is batting.366, second-best in the PCL in that span to Reno s Socrates Brito (.381). His.458 on-base percentage in that time leads the league, while his 39 RBI are tied for fourth-most. Campbell has driven in 20 runs in June, trailing Fresno s AJ Reed (24) for the league lead this month. Campbell is ninth in the PCL batting race (.332). In addition to his success league-wide, Campbell leads the Baby Cakes in hits (70), doubles (14), batting average (.332) and RBI (46). WHAT A RELIEF Javy Guerra has pitched 9.2 shutout frames in seven appearances since being activated from the disabled list. Dating back to his final six outings with the Baby Cakes last season, Guerra owns a 19.0-inning scoreless streak. Humber strikes out three while walking none to win his league-leading eighth game. PINCH ME Scott Van Slyke picked up a pinch single yesterday, the third pinch hit in the last two games for New Orleans. Pinch hitters are batting.307 (12x39) for the season, adding a home run and 10 RBI. JUNE BOOM New Orleans boasts a.278 team batting average this month, ranking seventh among PCL clubs. The Cakes had hit just.225 in April, the club s lowest over a full month since hitting.222 in May 2008. NOLA has scored 109 runs in 21 games, averaging 5.1 per contest, after averaging 3.5 in April and 5.4 in May. GETTING DEFENSIVE Despite committing two errors yesterday, the Cakes are tied for fourth in the league with a.982 fielding percentage. The 18 errors in June are second-most in the league (Sacramento, 24). The Cakes are 10-26 when committing an error. TOMAS THE TANK Tomas Telis took his hitting streak to a seasonhigh eight games with his first home run since May 17. He has hit safely in 13 of 15 games at home, where he is hitting.390 (23x59). On the road, Telis is batting.247 (21x85). Since joining the Cakes on May 4, Telis has picked up 44 hits - 40 of which have been singles - to rank among the top 20 in the PCL in that span. Dating back to May 23 last season, Telis owns a.329 batting average (95x289) over his last 74 games with New Orleans. NOLA AWAY FROM NOLA Austin Nola is hitting.365 (27x74) in 22 road games this season, producing six doubles and 14 RBI. The former LSU standout is hitting.364 (4x11) in his last three appearances. BULLIED The Cakes bullpen has allowed 19 earned runs in their last six games, spanning 20.0 innings for a 7.05 ERA. Their 15 blown saves lead the PCL. HOME SWEET HOME At 22-13, the Baby Cakes have the second-best home record in the PCL behind Oklahoma City (27-9). Conversely, New Orleans has the worst road mark in the league at 14-26, percentage points behind Iowa (13-23) and Nashville (12-22). LONELIEST NUMBER The Baby Cakes are 11-18 in one run games, 15th in the PCL ahead of only Sacramento (7-12). The Cakes had won four in a row until dropping back-to-back decisions Friday and Saturday. The 29 one-run games are four more than Iowa (25) for the league lead. MAGNIFICENT MAGGY Magneuris Sierra has hit safely in 18 of his last 21 games. In his last 26 starts, Sierra has compiled a.298 batting average (34x114) with seven doubles, two home runs, nine RBI and 17 runs scored. ROSTER MOVES The Marlins have recalled right-hander Ben Meyer, who had been scheduled to start tonight s game for New Orleans. Meyer pitched 3.0 scoreless innings across two relief appearances with Miami earlier this month in his first career big league action. IN THE PEN Cloyd pitched in five games out of the Miami bullpen, posting a 10.80 ERA (16 ER/13.1 IP) around a trip to the paternity list to attend the birth of his third child. He worked at least 3.0 innings in three of the five appearances. WHAT A RELIEF Cloyd scattered four hits and a pair of walks across 5.0 shutout innings of relief vs. the Dodgers on 5/12. It tied the longest relief outing of his career, matching 5.0 scoreless frames on August 24, 2013 vs. Arizona while pitching for Philadelphia. He was optioned to NOLA after the game. HOME COOKIN Starting in his hometown of Papillon, Cloyd gave up eight runs on 11 hits to Omaha on 5/22, both season highs by a Cakes pitcher. He rebounded six days later in Des Moines to blank Iowa for 6.0 innings, but did not factor into the decision. 2017 in review PATRIOTIC DUTY Cloyd began 2017 with the independent Somerset Patriots, where he allowed two runs in 12.0 IP with 16 strikeouts across three starts. He was signed to a minor league pact by the Seattle Mariners on 05/10 and assigned to AAA Tacoma. MARVELOUS MAY Cloyd opened his stint with Tacoma in superb fashion, blanking the opposition over his first 15.2 innings spanning three-plus starts. On 5/23, Cloyd picked up his first win of the year, pitching 5.0 shutout innings against Fresno. BACK IN THE BIGS The Mariners purchased Cloyd s contract on 6/2, and he tossed a scoreless seventh inning in his lone appearance with the club on 6/9 vs. Toronto to earn his first Major League victory since June 6, 2013. He was optioned back to Tacoma following the game, and DFA d on 6/21. HOMER HAPPY After rejoining Tacoma on 6/14, Cloyd went on to pitch in another four games (three starts) before the All-Star break without serving up his first home run. Following the break, he gave up eight home runs in 35.0 innings. EARLY SEASON STUD Cloyd carried a 1.42 ERA (4 ER/25.1 IP) into the All-Star break in 2017, after notching a 1.37 ERA prior to the break for AAA Scranton Wikles-Barre in 2016. Cloyd faltered to a 8.74 ERA (34 ER/35.0 IP) in 12 games (eight starts) with Tacoma in 2017. CLOSING STRONG In his final two starts, on 8/30 vs. Salt Lake and 9/3 at Las Vegas, Cloyd worked a combined 10.2 innings and surrendered just one run on five hits with seven strikeouts and one walk.
