LEVEL Upper primary LONDON 2012 SPORTS DESCRIPTION In these activities, students learn about the sports to be played at London 2012. They explore aspects including rules, equipment and game play be researching on the Internet or in reference books. These cross-curriculum activities contribute to the achievement of the following: Creative and visual arts Selects, combines and manipulates images, shapes and forms using a range of skills, techniques and processes. English Interprets and discusses some relationships between ideas, information and events in visual texts for general viewing. Physical education Interprets and discusses aspects of sporting activities including rules, gameplay, equipment and safety. ACTIVITIES The following activities may be completed independently or combined as part of a more comprehensive learning sequence, lesson or educational program. Please refer to your own state or territory syllabus for more explicit guidelines. London 2012 sports 1. Discuss the sports played during an Olympic Games. Brainstorm with the class to create a list of sports to be played during London 2012, using the following as a guide: gymnastics baseball sailing basketball boxing cycling fencing London 2012 sports volleyball judo athletics When you have a few sports recorded, read the following to the class: In London 2012 the program will include the following sports: Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Boxing, Canoe Slalom, Canoe Sprint, Cycling BMX, Cycling - Mountain Bike, Cycling Road, Cycling Track, Diving, Equestrian Dressage, Equestrian Eventing, Equestrian Jumping, Fencing, Football, Gymnastics Artistic, Gymnastics Rhythmic, Gymnastics Trampoline, Handball, Hockey, Judo, Modern Pentathlon, Rowing, Sailing, Shooting, Swimming, Synchronised Swimming, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis, Triathlon, Volleyball, Water, Polo, Weightlifting and Wrestling. 3. Show the class photos or video of a selection of these sports (you might like to access http://www.london2012.com/sport beforehand to prepare). Ask if anyone in the class has participated in any of these sports. Discuss the variations of selected sports, such as Gymnastics Artistic, Gymnastics Rhythmic, Gymnastics Trampoline. Distribute Student handout and organise the class into several groups. You might like to organise student into groups of mixed ability to allow for peer tutoring and/or to assist students with difficulty.
Ask each group to divide a number of the sports between members of the group, with a one sport assigned to each person. Access the Internet http://www.london2012.com/sport to research the rules, game play, equipment and venues required for each of their assigned sport. Report the findings to the rest of the class and co-construct the table as a whole class. Use you own paper if you need. REFLECT ON a.s.p.i.r.e. VALUES Discuss how sportsmanship relates to the actual rules and game play of a range of sports and activities. For example, if the referee misses a rule violation, should players point it out, even if they would gain from the error? What are some situations where the Australian Olympic Team has shown good sportsmanship? EXPLORE A LITTLE FURTHER Draw pictures of a London 2012 sport and display on the classroom wall. Write plays featuring characters competing in a range of sporting events. Collect photos and illustrations of different types of sports played at London 2012. Research other cultural events that are part of the London 2012 Olympic festival. Discuss and research the uniforms and safety equipment used in a range of sports. Find other examples from everyday life where rules need to be kept or can be broken. What are the relevant guidelines and why?
