PACK THE HOUSE HISTORY JAN. 25, 2008 The Marist women s basketball program recorded its first sellout in program history on its inaugural Pack the House night, one of only six schools in the nation to record a sellout. FEB. 6, 2009 Marist recorded its second sellout in program history, as the Red Foxes became the only program in the nation to Pack the House for the second straight season. FEB. 4, 2011 The NCAA announced that Marist was the overall winner in the 2010-11 NCAA Division I Pack the House Challenge. Marist beat out 177 participating institutions which included sellout crowds by Army, Baylor, Duke, Gonzaga, Louisville, Michigan State, Navy, Oregon and Pacific. Feb. 10, 2012 The Red Foxes again hosted a successful Pack the House as 2,692 fans watched Marist triumph in a first-place showdown with Fairfield, 60-54, in a Pack the Prom theme. Feb. 22, 2013 Using the theme of White Out, 2,671 fans saw the Red Foxes record a 69-44 triumph over Rider. Feb. 8, 2014 A sellout crowd - the second of the season, a program record - saw the Red Foxes host Fairfield with a Hawaiian theme. PACK THE HOUSE Pack the House began as an NCAA initiative in which conferences and institutions compete to build attendance. Although the NCAA no longer sponsors Pack the House, the Marist Athletics Department continues to carry on the tradition. MARIST AND BREAST CANCER AWARENESS For the seventh straight year, the Marist Athletics Department partnered with the Women s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) to host a Play 4Kay game, formerly known as Pink Zone, when the Red Foxes defeated Quinnipiac by a score of 100-81 on Feb. 14, 2014. The Red Foxes have been actively involved in raising funds for breast cancer since 2003, and have raised thousands of dollars and reached over 17,000 fans at the McCann Center for these games. The 2012 game was particularly special for Marist assistant coaches Erin Leger and Alisa Kresge as their mothers, Margaret Leger and Diane Somers, who are both breast cancer survivors, served as the Red Foxes guest coaches for the game. MILES OF HOPE BREAST CANCER FOUNDATION Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation is the primary beneficiary of Marist s Play 4Kay contest. A foundation based in the Hudson River Valley, Milesof Hope helps people in the Hudson Valley who are affected by breast cancer. The foundation serves eight counties: Dutchess, Greene, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Ulster and Westchester. The foundation was started by Dana Effron and Cathy Varunok who were both personally affected by breast cancer in their lives. The pair began their involvement with breast cancer fund raising at a national level, but decided to give back in their own community, the Hudson River Valley. Pari Forood serves as the Executive Director of the foundation and is responsible for all administrative aspects of the foundation including fund raising, public/media relations among other things. She coordinates four major fund raising events for the foundation each year, including the Hoops for Hope Women s Basketball Tournament, which is held at the James J. McCann Center in March. For more information on Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation, visit: http://www.milesofhopebcf.org/ WOMEN S BASKETBALL COACHES ASSOCIATION The WBCA began the WBCA Play 4Kay, formerly known as Pink Zone and Think Pink, in 2007 as an initiative to raise breast cancer awareness in women s basketball, on campuses and in communities. The late Kay Yow, former North Carolina State University head women s basketball coach, served as the catalyst for the initiative after her third reoccurrence of breast cancer in 2006. The mission of the initiative is a nation of coaches raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The Kay Yow Cancer Fund will continue to be the official charity of the initiative. Founded in 1981, the WBCA promotes women s basketball by unifying coaches at all levels to develop a reputable identity for the sport and to foster and promote the development of the game as a sport for women and girls. The Red Foxes led at the half but some hot shooting and strong rebounding from the Jackrabbits allowed South Dakota to pull away and control the remainder of the game. The Jackrabbits had their biggest lead of 15 with 6:41 remaining and the closest the Red Foxes would get to is within 10 with 3:31 remaining in the game. The Jackrabbits used a 28-15 third quarter to take control of the game and would hold the Red Foxes at bay from there. Tori Jarosz hampered by early foul trouble would score 19 of her 21 points in the second half while converting on 11 of her 14 free throw attempts. The quick fouls for Jarosz wouldn t deter the Red Foxes from a hot shooting first half as the team connected on 12-of-24 (.500) of their field goal attempts and 5-of-11 (.455) of their three point attempts in the half. The Red Foxes had stretches of genius on offense but the youth also showed as the team would have ten turnovers in the half and 14 in the game overall. The youthful mistakes could be chalked up to a milestone moment for the Red Foxes, as head coach Brian Giorgis started true freshmen, Rebecka Garderyd and Morgan Bartner, for the first time in his tenure. Garderyd played 13 minutes and recorded two points and a steal, while Bartner played 12 minutes and pulled down four rebounds. Heading into the game Coffey needed 14 points for 1,000 in her career, a three pointer from the wing with 5:37 left in the 4th quarter would give Coffey her milestone and helped pull the Red Foxes back to within 11. Coffey would finish the game with 18 points on 5-for-11 shooting and led the team with a game-high five assists. The Red Foxes other double-digit scorer, Allie Clement, scored 12 points on 4-for-8 shooting from three point range and dished out four assists. Tori Jarosz finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds, her second double-double of the season, but early foul trouble plagued her all game and held her to 28 minutes of action. Cold shooting was the story of the game for the Red Foxes, as the team managed just 1-for-12 shooting from three point range in the first half and finished the game 4-for-23 overall from deep. Clement recorded the team s first and only three in the first half with under two minutes remaining. Up to that point the Red Foxes had 14 of their points inside the paint and the other seven from trips to the free throw line. Overall in the first half the Red Foxes shot 8-for-27 (.296) from the field and headed to the locker room down just 10 to the Red Storm. The Red Foxes were led by all-around performances in the losing effort. Tori Jarosz did a litte bit of everything for Marist scoring 13 points, grabbing seven rebounds, dishing out four assists, and recorded three blocks and three steals. Sydney Coffey scored 10 points on 4-for-8 shooting, had five boards, and three assists with a block. After heading into the locker room leading Louisville, 32-28, a 6-0 run in the middle of the third quarter and a close to four minute scoring drought for the Red Foxes would put Louisville up 38-34 with 4:44 left in the quarter. Consecutive free throws from Rebecka Garderyd, Jarosz, Van Horn, and Garderyd again would give the Red Foxes a 6-0 run of their own, regaining the lead at 40-38. The Red Foxes and Cardinals would then trade baskets back and forth to end the third quarter. First a three from Louisville s Mariya Moore, then a fast break lay-up from the Red Foxes Maura Fitzpatrick, capped by a short jumper and then a layup from Sam Fuehring. The Cardinals would outscore Marist 17-10 in the third and take a 45-42 lead to the fourth quarter. Jarosz and Coffey would get the Red Foxes started in the fourth with consecutive layups to pull the deficit to one. After a Cardinal s bucket, a dime from Allie Clement led to a transition layup from Jarosz that gave the Red Foxes their first and only lead in the fourth quarter with 6:01 remaining. A Louisville lay-up from Arica Carter would stop a near 2:45 minute scoring drought for Louisville and give the Cardinals the lead again at 51-50. The Cardinals used the lay-up to spark a 7-0 run and take a 56-50 lead with under five minutes remaining, a lead Louisville wouldn t relinquish. The turnovers that didn t turn into points in the first half caused the Marist offense to sputter and stop in the fourth. Louisville forced 14 more turnovers in the second half turning it into 17 points as opposed to just five in the first. Clement led the way for the Red Foxes in the first half, scorching the nets to the tune of 12 points on 4-for-5 shooting from behind the arc. As a team the Red Foxes shot 6-for-10 (.600) from deep in the first half and 12-for-25 (.480) from the field. The Red Foxes other leading scorers at the half were Coffey with seven points and Claire Oberdorf with six points. The Red Foxes also played some stifling defense in the first half, forcing nine turnovers and held the Cardinals to 8-for-30 shooting from the field (.267) and 3-for-7 (.429) from three. The Cardinals did earn 10 offensive boards in the half but were outscored by Marist 12-10 in the paint. Last FG - MARW 4th-04:51, LOU 4th-00:36. Red Foxes Downed by LSU in Second Day of GC Showcase ESTERO, Florida The Marist women s basketball team dropped their second game at the Gulf Coast Showcase, falling to Louisiana State University (LSU), 72-49, Saturday afternoon at Germain Arena. The Red Foxes never could quite get it going as an up and down performance on both ends of the floor led to the team s sixth straight loss. Allie Clement finished as the Red Foxes leading scorer and only player in double digits with 11 points on 3-for-7 shooting from behind the arc. Clement also added four rebounds and a steal. Maura Fitzpatrick tallied a career high nine points on 2-for-5 shooting from the field and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. As a team the Red Foxes finished the game shooting just 16-for-45 (.356) from the field and 7-for-21 (.333) from deep. The Tigers in comparison shot 29-for-66 (.439) on their field goals and converted on 12-for-19 of their trips to the line. Tori Jarosz was strong out of the gates for the Red Foxes as she led the team with six points and three rebounds in the first quarter. LSU started hot, shooting 9-for-17 (.529) from the field while the Red Foxes were just 4-for-14 (.286) in the opening stanza. Keeping Marist around in the first quarter was their hustle, as a team the Red Foxes had five offensive rebounds and six second chance points to go along with converting on seven of their first eight free throws. In the second quarter after back-to-back threes from Sydney Coffey and Clement knotted the score at 21 apiece, Jarosz picked up back-to-back fouls and was forced to sit for the majority of the period. LSU responded to the 6-0 Marist run with a 5-0 run of their own and from there the teams traded stops and baskets until a 7-0 LSU run ended the half. The teams headed to the locker room with LSU in the lead, 37-28. In the half the Red Foxes shot 8-for-22 (.364) from the field, 3-for-12 (.250) from deep, and 9-for-10 (.900) from the free throw stripe. Jarosz, who was held scoreless in the second quarter, led the team with six points and four rebounds. The Red Foxes ran hot and cold in the third quarter. At one point the offense appeared to be heating up and finding a groove, going 3-for-3 and 5-of-their-last-7 before succumbing to turnovers and missed shots. Marist finished the quarter 0-for-4 from the field and had five turnovers as LSU took advantage, finishing the quarter on a 6-0 run and headed to the fourth leading the Red Foxes by 16, 58-42.
