February 18, POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist women s basketball team won their 20th game in a row, defeating the Manhattan Jaspers on a day in which the program retired all-time Marist great Rachele Fitz s jersey. Fitz became the first women s basketball player to have her jersey retired. Brandy Gang scored a career-high 19 points for the third time that season and the second time against Manhattan as the Red Foxes led from wire-to-wire. SCOUTING QUINNIPIAC The Bobcats sit just half a game behind first place Iona in the conference standings and boast a dynamic freshman one-two punch with Paula Strautmane and Aryn McClure, winners of the last five MAAC Rookie of the Week awards between them. In McClure s previous outing vs Iona she had a career and game-high 22 points on 10-of-16 shooting from the floor to go along with nine rebounds, three assists and three blocks while Strautmane posted 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting with eight rebounds, a career-high five assists and three steals in a career-high 35 minutes. The Bobcats have been on an absolute tear since their emergence outscoring their last seven opponents by a combined score of VS QUINNIPIAC Series Record: 4-4 Current Streak: MARIST, W1 RED FOX NATIONAL RANKINGS Tori Jarosz currently sits 15th in blocked shots per game averaging 3.12, 11th in blocked shots overall with 78, 9th in rebounds per game with 11.9, and 8th in overall rebounds with 298. Allie Clement is currently ranked 77th in three-point field goals made with 58, 72nd in three-point field goals made per game with 2.42, and ranked 70th in three-point field goal percentage at Sydney Coffey ranks 46th in the nation in assists to turnover ratio, averaging DAILY DOUBLE-DOUBLE Tori Jarosz has been a machine on the offensive and defensive side of the floor as well as a beast on the glass for the Red Foxes so far this season. The sixth-year senior center now has 20 double-doubles and is currently second in the nation. Although Jarosz missed some early games last season she has already exceeded her double-double output from last year in just over half the season. 600 IS HISTORY With the Red Foxes win against Monmouth on January 17th the Marist women s basketball team reached a milestone 600 victories. With 332 of those wins coming under Head Coach Brian Giorgis watch, in just 13 seasons the Red Foxes have accumulated more than half of their program win total in close to a third of the time the program has been in existence (35th year as varsity). BLOCK QUEEN Tori Jarosz set Marist s single-season blocks record with 71 last year, and tied the program s single-game blocks record with seven against South Dakota on Dec. 21, 2014 and then did it again this season with seven blocks against Rider on Jan. 3, On January 28th against rival Siena Tori Jarosz had six blocks including the all-time record tying and breaking blocks. 1,000 POINT CLUB Sydney Coffey and Tori Jarosz are the two newest members to the 1000 point club. Coffey secured the milestone in the Red Foxes season opener against South Dakota State University; Tori Jarosz secured the mark in a January game against Saint Peter s and is the fourth fastest Red Fox to the mark based on games played. Marist now has 24 players in program history who have scored 1,000 career points.

7 COFFEY BREAKS Sydney Coffey leads the outside/inside attack for Marist as a unique slasher and shooter who is very adept at getting to the line. Coffey is second all-time in the Red Foxes record book for free throws made. The senior guard broke a 24 year old Marist women s basketball record in her outing against Canisius, scoring 38 points. Coffey was unstoppable in the first half and fourth quarter, and was able to best the 24 year old record despite being held scoreless in the third quarter. Coffey finished 12-for-26 from the field, hit five three pointers, and went 7-for-9 from the free throw line. Coffey also grabbed five rebounds and dished out four assists while playing every single minute of the game. Coffey was named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference player of the Week for the week ending December 13th. It was the second time in her career Coffey had been awarded with this honor and the second week in a row a Red Fox has been awarded Player of the Week after Tori Jarosz had won it the week prior. DOMINATION FROM DOWN LOW Tori Jarosz has led the way for the Red Foxes this season and smashed personal achievements and Marist records along the way. Jarosz boasts an array of moves in the low post and can also step outside to shoot from range. Not only an offensive threat, her best work is featured on the defensive end as she swats away shots from the opposition with ease. Jarosz scored her 1,000th career point on January 25th, as the Red Foxes beat the Saint Peter s Peacocks for the team s fifth straight Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference win in a row. Jarosz finished the night with her 15th double-double of the year with 18 points on 5-for-13 shooting and 8-for-9 from the free throw line, 19 rebounds (two shy of the program single game record), six blocks, and two assists. On January 28th against Siena Jarosz picked up the 163rd of her career, breaking the alltime program record which was held by Diesa Siedel. Jarosz had been named MAAC player of the week twice this season along with Metropolitan Writers Association s Women s Basketball Player of the Week and Corvias ECAC Women s Basketball Player of the Week. OBERDORF HITS THE GROUND RUNNING The freshman walk-on who was recruited by Marist to play softball has been the Red Foxes spark plug this season. Oberdorf has grabbed the starting point guard position and ran with it, increasing her offensive production every step of the way. Oberdorf tallied a new career high with 18 points on 6-for-7 shooting from the field, four rebounds, and three assists. In her previous two outings she had set and matched her career high with nine points, against the Peacocks she doubled it. After missing her first four attempts for three and taking no more than six throughout the first half of the season, Oberdorf has been more than reliable from deep, converting on 40 percent of her threes throughout the year SOPHOMORE SHOOTER Allie Clement, the sophomore guard from Maine, is seeing a return to her high school days in terms of shooting the ball from deep. After shooting a disappointing.214 percent from outside in her freshman season, Clement has found the range in the college game and is currently shooting above 35 percent with a high number of threes taken. After battling illness throughout the week Allie Clement, making her first start of the season off the bench, recorded a new career high in points, scoring 18 on 6-for-7 shooting from behind the arc against Niagara on February 12th MAAC RANKINGS SCORING OFFENSE G W-L Pts Avg/G 1. 9 PACK THE HOUSE Pack the House began as an NCAA initiative in which conferences and institutions compete to build attendance. Although the NCAA no longer sponsors Pack the House, the Marist Athletics Department continues to carry on the tradition. MAAC HONOR ROLL The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference held its annual MAAC Honor Roll dinner at the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame Court of Dreams. Marist s honorees were Ursula Winter and Steve Smith. Winter played at Marist from She was a standout for the Marist women s basketball program in its early days of Division I play, and her impact is evident in the record books 30 years after the conclusion of her career. Winter graduated as Marist s all-time leading scorer with 1,587 points. She held this record for a quarter-century, and remains one of just two players in program history to score over 1,500 career points. MARIST AND BREAST CANCER AWARENESS For the seventh straight year, the Marist Athletics Department partnered with the Women s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) to host a Play 4Kay game, formerly known as Pink Zone, when the Red Foxes defeated Quinnipiac by a score of on Feb. 14, The Red Foxes have been actively involved in raising funds for breast cancer since 2003, and have raised thousands of dollars and reached over 17,000 fans at the McCann Center for these games. The 2012 game was particularly special for Marist assistant coaches Erin Leger and Alisa Kresge as their mothers, Margaret Leger and Diane Somers, who are both breast cancer survivors, served as the Red Foxes guest coaches for the game. MILES OF HOPE BREAST CANCER FOUNDATION Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation is the primary beneficiary of Marist s Play 4Kay contest. A foundation based in the Hudson River Valley, Milesof Hope helps people in the Hudson Valley who are affected by breast cancer. The foundation serves eight counties: Dutchess, Greene, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Ulster and Westchester. The foundation was started by Dana Effron and Cathy Varunok who were both personally affected by breast cancer in their lives. The pair began their involvement with breast cancer fund raising at a national level, but decided to give back in their own community, the Hudson River Valley. Pari Forood serves as the Executive Director of the foundation and is responsible for all administrative aspects of the foundation including fund raising, public/media relations among other things.
