MAAC HONOR ROLL The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference held its annual MAAC Honor Roll dinner at the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame Court of Dreams. Marist s honorees were Ursula Winter and Steve Smith. Winter played at Marist from She was a standout for the Marist women s basketball program in its early days of Division I play, and her impact is evident in the record books 30 years after the conclusion of her career. Winter graduated as Marist s all-time leading scorer with 1,587 points. She held this record for a quarter-century, and remains one of just two players in program history to score over 1,500 career points. The 2012 game was particularly special for Marist assistant coaches Erin Leger and Alisa Kresge as their mothers, Margaret Leger and Diane Somers, who are both breast cancer survivors, served as the Red Foxes guest coaches for the game. MILES OF HOPE BREAST CANCER FOUNDATION Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation is the primary beneficiary of Marist s Play 4Kay contest. A foundation based in the Hudson River Valley, Milesof Hope helps people in the Hudson Valley who are affected by breast cancer. The foundation serves eight counties: Dutchess, Greene, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Ulster and Westchester. The foundation was started by Dana Effron and Cathy Varunok who were both personally affected by breast cancer in their lives. The pair began their involvement with breast cancer fund raising at a national level, but decided to give back in their own community, the Hudson River Valley. Pari Forood serves as the Executive Director of the foundation and is responsible for all administrative aspects of the foundation including fund raising, public/media relations among other things. She coordinates four major fund raising events for the foundation each year, including the Hoops for Hope Women s Basketball Tournament, which is held at the James J. McCann Center in March. WOMEN S BASKETBALL COACHES ASSOCIATION The WBCA began the WBCA Play 4Kay, formerly known as Pink Zone and Think Pink, in 2007 as an initiative to raise breast cancer awareness in women s basketball, on campuses and in communities. The late Kay Yow, former North Carolina State University head women s basketball coach, served as the catalyst for the initiative after her third reoccurrence of breast cancer in The mission of the initiative is a nation of coaches raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The Kay Yow Cancer Fund will continue to be the official charity of the initiative. Founded in 1981, the WBCA promotes women s basketball by unifying coaches at all levels to develop a reputable identity for the sport and to foster and promote the development of the game as a sport for women and girls.

The Red Foxes led at the half but some hot shooting and strong rebounding from the Jackrabbits allowed South Dakota to pull away and control the remainder of the game. The Jackrabbits had their biggest lead of 15 with 6:41 remaining and the closest the Red Foxes would get to is within 10 with 3:31 remaining in the game. The Jackrabbits used a third quarter to take control of the game and would hold the Red Foxes at bay from there. Tori Jarosz hampered by early foul trouble would score 19 of her 21 points in the second half while converting on 11 of her 14 free throw attempts. The quick fouls for Jarosz wouldn t deter the Red Foxes from a hot shooting first half as the team connected on 12-of-24 (.500) of their field goal attempts and 5-of-11 (.455) of their three point attempts in the half. The Red Foxes had stretches of genius on offense but the youth also showed as the team would have ten turnovers in the half and 14 in the game overall. The youthful mistakes could be chalked up to a milestone moment for the Red Foxes, as head coach Brian Giorgis started true freshmen, Rebecka Garderyd and Morgan Bartner, for the first time in his tenure. Garderyd played 13 minutes and recorded two points and a steal, while Bartner played 12 minutes and pulled down four rebounds. Heading into the game Coffey needed 14 points for 1,000 in her career, a three pointer from the wing with 5:37 left in the 4th quarter would give Coffey her milestone and helped pull the Red Foxes back to within 11. Coffey would finish the game with 18 points on 5-for-11 shooting and led the team with a game-high five assists. Red Foxes Open MAAC Play With Win Over Quinnipiac POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - The Red Foxes collected their first win of the season in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opener on Thursday, Dec. 3 with a victory over the Quinnipiac Bobcats. The defeat marked the first conference loss in the last 21 MAAC games for Quinnipiac, with the previous coming on Feb. 27, 2014 in a defeat vs. Iona. Tori Jarosz led Marist with 16 points and 14 rebounds, good for her fourth double-double in eight games. Allie Clement and Sydney Coffey each chipped in 13 points and five rebounds, as the Red Foxes outscored the Bobcats in the paint and outrebounded Quinnipiac 48-37, with 15 on the offensive side of the ball. Maria Napolitano led the visitors with 13 points on 5 for 15 shooting with three rebounds and two steals, while Katie Carroll contributed six points and six rebounds. Both teams started hot trading buckets to start the first until a near three minute scoring drought for Marist led to a 7-0 Quinnipiac run. A three from Clement would snap the Bobcats run and pull the score back to Clement poured in eight points in the first quarter behind 2-for-3 shooting from deep and the Red Foxes headed to the second quarter trailing Quinnipiac The second quarter failed to start as quickly as the first as both teams locked down on the defensive end and held each other to prolonged scoring droughts. Similar to the first quarter Clement rose to the occasion again, snapping a 0-for-8 scoring drought with another three to knot the game at 23. While the offense sputtered the defense picked them up holding Quinnipiac to eight points in the quarter to the Red Foxes 14. Marist ended the half on a 6-0 run capped by a big block from Jarosz that found a streaking Coffey and a two shot foul to take a lead heading into the half. Quinnipiac would hit the first three of the half but it would be all Marist from there. The Red Foxes would respond with a 6-0 run to open up a lead and then later in the quarter a 7-0 run to end the quarter up by 10. To go along with the Red Foxes offense the defense held Quinnipiac to another single digit scoring quarter including a near five minute scoring drought heading into the fourth. Despite finishing the game on just 3-for-13 shooting, the Marist defense locked down the visitors even tighter in the final quarter, holding the Bobcats to only 12 points on 5-for-17 shooting, including 1-for- 11 in the final 5:29. The Hawks then used a 6-0 run to take a lead heading into the first media timeout of the third quarter. Overall, after the Red Foxes took the lead, the Hawks responded with a 14-5 run to end the quarter and headed to the fourth with a lead. Marist and Monmouth started the fourth quarter trading baskets until a three from Coffey cut it to six, 51-45, with 6:05 remaining in the fourth. After a response from Monmouth, a hoop and a harm from Jarosz at the 4:50 mark sent her to the line heading out of a media timeout. Jarosz missed the free throw and after a few defensive possessions Monmouth s Sarah Olson drained a three from the top of the arc to take a lead with 3:32 left. Clement answered right back with a three of her own from straight away and cut the deficit back to six. After a stop and two free throws from Jarosz the Red Foxes had cut the Monmouth lead back down to four with 2:33 remaining but it was the closest Marist would get.
