Cont.. Environmental Pollution

Cont.. Road Safety More than 130,000 road deaths occur each year Africa has only 2% of world s vehicles population but has the highest (16%) road deaths per capita in the world Jonas Bendiksen / Magnum Photos for UNEP

Road Infrastructure investments Majority of the citizens walk or cycle but poor quality of NMT infrastructure

Provide Infrastructure for the People as well..

Share the Road Programme UNEP, Share the Road Programme Investing in walking and cycling

Share the Road Programme StR main goal: To promote and support systematic investments in walking and cycling road infrastructure Working With: Government Donors Civil Society Implementing Partners

Basis for StR: Investing in NMT is a Triple Win Opportunity Investments in Walking & Cycling Road Infrastructure Accessibility Improves affordable access to vital services Encourages a shift to NMT hence reducing traffic congestion Environment Reduces GHG & air pollutants Improves resource-efficiency in land use and energy Safety Protects vulnerable users through proper facilities Improves safety for all users by minimizing conflict

StR Best Practice in Promoting Investment in NMT NMT policies NMT demonstration projects NMT support tools

NMT Policies: Balanced Distribution of Investments NMT policy (either stand alone or as part of an integrated transport policy) is one of the enabling conditions necessary to redress the negative investment cycle in transportation infrastructure Nairobi NMT Policy Launch

Demonstration Projects: examples of shared sustainable roads Before UN Avenue Road, Nairobi After

NMT Support Tools: creating knowledge & expertise on NMT NMT cost-benefit analysis tool NMT design guidelines Courseware on NMT Situational Analysis.

NMT Cost-benefit Analysis Tool Non-motorised transport project appraisal tool (NMT- PAT): A tool for the evaluation of costs and benefits related to NMT projects in data scarce environments Aim: To get a deeper understanding of the inherent benefits in walking and cycling infrastructure and programmes

NMT Design Guidelines UNEP has developed NMT Design Guidelines for Africa, as a menu of interventions to guide policy makers and local authorities in planning, designing and realizing NMT facilities. The guidelines recommendations supplement, rather than replace, any existing detailed engineering guidance and do not supersede any existing law, rule or regulation.

Courseware on NMT Situational Analysis The courseware is based on the premise that sustainable transport is more than mobility alone, it needs to address the 5 A s: o o o o o Affordability Availability Access Accessibility Acceptability

Share the Road: Key Lessons Learnt Raising awareness and continuous sensitization on the importance of NMT is necessary- policy makers, donors citizens e.t.c A NMT Policy provides the basis for provision of the required infrastructure, information and conditions to make cycling and walking infrastructure a reality. It is critical to include plans for how NMT will be funded as part of NMT policy development Political will and commitment is essential to achieve investments in NMT Pilot projects provide opportunity to demonstrate the multiple benefits of NMT. Implementing pilots also provide an opportunity to test and learn. Choosing a pilot should be done with an understanding of the wider network and long term objectives planned. Data-driven and evidence based decision making ensures decisions are grounded in reality and take account of the needs of the citizens who will use the NMT infrastructure. NMT should be integrated with other transport systems e.g BRT for greater efficiency
