In many cases there are still six teams in the running, including the top grade. Old Trinity moved into fourth place last Saturday, when the previous occupiers, University Blues, went down by a goal to Reservoir Old Boys. But Trinity meet Ormond, who still have a chance, in today's round, and must win to hold their place, as University Blues should score from Monash Blues. But who can tell? Ormond kept their hopes alive just before half-time they were when they scored a big win over 3-18 and at one stage in the third St. Bernard's, who were displaced quarter, 3-24. If Ormond and University Blues win, the Blues will go back into the four. Hampton Rovers are equal second, but are the "odd man out" (fifth) on percentage, and will be looking for one of the three bottom teams, Alphington, Power House or Kew to cause an upset and let them in. There's little between Heather- ANOTHER O.M. CENTURY Old Melburnians congratulate Peter Roberson, in his 7th season with the club, on playing 100 games. Peter was, is, and we are certain, will always be one of our most outstanding club men. As a committee man and friend to all he generates much enthusiasm. As a player, Peter has proved to, be a dedicated and determined footballer, having recently overcome serious injuries to become vice-captain of the seniors and a prolific goal-kicker. However, the resultant edge of menml keenness has been counterbalanced by an inability to control the pen. What am I going to do about St. Bernard's? I'll tell you what. I am g,,ing to tip against them for the first time this season. So its De La Salle to notch an important morale-boosting win for me and put the seal on the important sec o nd chance in the final series. What a rcnt effort for a club, fresh from B seciion. Although assured of a second chance North Old Boys will adopt a very business-like approach to their encounter,siih Reservoir Old Boys. Following their big win last week, North must start iac~?urites but I am sure Reservoir will severely test them before going down narrowly. I he last game, between Old Trinity and Ormond has a great deal hanging on it, and in my opinion, the teams look very e %, enly matched. I'm falling back on the weakest reason of all, home ground advantage, and the incentive of a first ever appearance in A section finals for their club, in deciding in favour of Old Trinity. SELECTIONS : De La Salle, Coburg, University Blues, North Old Boys, Old Trinity. - ALF KEAM. B SECTION Hell hath no greater fury than a tipster scorned. After Old Paradians' performances in the last fortnight it has been suggested a case exists for a Final 3 rather than a Final 4 or 5. Old Scotch will, if they play to their true ability defeat Paradians comfortably. However, I have still to be con- THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - AUGUST 21, 197 6 vinced that Scotch have shrugged off that No. 3 label and wish to return to A Grade where they should have been well before this point. Sure they have great individual players in Cox, Sherwen, Marx, Tallent, Purnell, King and Anderson, along with newcomer Brown, but of that group only "Ando" has proved by continual example that he is- going to make A grade or bust. We must still find out whether that Scotch half-back line is tight enough to win finals or whether they are an exciting, dashing but loose group. Paradians have individual class (sometimes) and will claim their two great wins in the last month make them a worthy Flag contender. I wonder. Anyway Scotch want that double chance and will win. Melbourne High's spirited run home is to be admired and it is a pity to see such an enthusiastic group going back to C (if in fact they do), but all in I cannot see them defeating Marcellin who still have a hope for the double chance. The small ground will trouble Marcellin and whilst Jones could be shut out of the game, Mahon, Cullinan and Gartner will not be affected. The clash between Power and Silberberg will be a good one. Geelong are fortunate they only have to defeat Old Carey as a loss could send them to C grade. (They have been trying awfully hard to get there.) I must select Geelong only because they have won games and Carey haven't, but keep in mind this game is away from home. Collegians will end the year on a good note and defeat a disappointing St. Kilda C.B.C. These two teams at least live to fight again. Drinan's form is interesting F.B. to F.F. How many today? The best game today will be between Ivanhoe and Caulfield. Ivanhoe have nothing to lose and will move the ball about cleverly. This will be a headache for Caulfield's stronger brigade. I know Ivanhoe would love to win this one and boast having beaten the possible Premier team. Caulfield should win but under conditions like this game absolutely anything could happen so do not be surprised by the result. It is not often you have the chance to see two teams play freely today could be worth watching. SELECTIONS: Collegians, Geelong, Marcellin, Old Scotch, Caulfield Gramm. - JOHN BYRNE. C SECTIO N Old Haileybury go to the top of the Ladder and a photo finish for the next three places. It's hard to presume anything in this Section. At home, and if they make up their minds to win - Old Haileyburians should retain top spot and the double chance. Congratulations to all teams in this section on a very even competition and I hope the Tipster's Notes have given the coaches something to spruik about. My selections this week are the top five - at home : Parkside, Fawkner, Old Melburnians, Hampton Rovers, Old Haileyburians. - ALEX JOHNSON. D SECTION I am really on the "band wagon" of the Old Xaverians this week. And Association President, Lou Zacharia h must be beaming for the first time in years. And add to the "on the field" performance, they are the only Final Four contender to answer my request for up-to-date news. John Unkles is certainly a "scribe's dream" - if you reckon I am donating too much space to one of the V.A.F.A.'s o rnament club's, he is the reason why. But I still have some secrets on the hot tip for the D Section premiership resting up my sleeve for later in the piece. AJAX, I felt, have been a good chance to "skid" for quite a while ; all those inaccurate scores in recent weelcs can hardly breed confidence. Their top goal-kicker Bialek is most important to their hopes of winning r, flag. At the moment it would not sur prise if a bubbling Old Camberwell beat them to D Section! Perhaps you are a one man team after all AJAX! - certainly when Mike Ritterman really fires you are well and truly in business. The big game today, Old Xavs and Assumption. Assumption are the only team in the Section not to have yet lowered colours to the fast rising Xavs But by 4.45 p.m. today this will not be the case. Main life in the regenerated Old %nvs has come from 3 school-boy recruits - Nick Wilton, Dick Cookesley and a young centre-half-forward in Steve Curtain. They have blended well with the experienced players such as vice-captain Nankervis and "Super Glue" (not patented) in the back pocket. ' Here's a chance AJAX to restore con fidence. I remind you of what you beat Brunswick by last time. You'll win well a~ain but I hope Brunswick are spared a little mercy. Old Camberwell will not be troubled by Elsternwick. Camberwell need to win strongly to maintain rating as a threat to AJAX and Old Xaverians. They will not relax today. State Bank still are determined to finish the best side out of the four and a win today over National Bank could assure this, depending of course on Old Geelong upsetting Old Brighton. State Bank will burst home with a percentage-building goal spree but to no acail as Old Brighton will hold fi fth place by outclassing Old Geelong. E SECTIO N Monash Whites and Common Bank to accompany me to F section, LaTrobe Blacks, St. Kev's and Old Mentonians safe in the four and three to sort out fourth place. North Brunswick won last week but ctidn't achieve much in the way of perentage so they will be flat out against St. Pats. I've no doubt all the brains have been corking out the pros and cons ; if this or that happens, etc., but if your auntie had different equipment she'd be your uncle. Heatherton should account for Monash Whites without much trouble and they, too, will be looking for a percentage boost. LaTrobe Blacks to entertain Comn on Bank without much doubt as to the final result. Old Mentonians and St. Kevin's to play for second position. I fancy St. Ke\ s. They both kicked a bundle last %ceek but St. Kev's did it against stronger opposition and appear to have come good again. A.N.Z. and A.M.P. both sides playing at home, A.N.Z. having the greater incentive forlorn though it may appear on paper. Still 5th or 6th looks better than 7th and I've no doubt that A.N.Z. yvill give it a good t ry. SELECTIONS : Heatherton, St. Kevin's, LaTrobe Blacks, A.N.Z. Bank, North Brunswick. Congratulations to the top four clubs and good luck next week. - SYD 11'I-IITFIELD. F SECTION The four is now a closed affair with Beverley Hills playing Footscray in the first semi and West Brunswick playing St. Bede's. Last week's defeat of St. Bede's by Beverley Hills might have raised a few eyebrows. St. Bede's supporters may say it was a good thing to happen before the fi nals, although Beverley Hilis supporters will be thinking pretty loudly that those two top teams may not be so invincible as most people think, or at least St. Bede's maybe. West Brunswick, undefeated, handed out another thrashing last week, again proving, their superiority. Certainly they are the team to beat and I guess that many opposition supporters will content themselves with the thought that there have been many teams who have been unbeaten in the home games but when they played in the finals, well that's a completely different story. Will It be a different story? This week Footscray meet West Brunswick at Seddon and if Footscray have any thoughts of a grand final game they must "produce" this week. For fear of having the gaming squad on my back I won't bet on the outcome, West Brunswick to win. Bulleen-Templestowe although suffering at the hands of West Brunswick last week, will dish out their own revenge on LaTrobe Reds. Beverley Hills will be preparing themselves (hopefully) for the finals and a good win over Bulleen United is needed for morale as well as tough match play. Thornbury and University Reds, little to say except that the home side to win. St. Bede's and Glenroy, bad luck for Glenroy because St. Bede's will be out to make amends for last week's shambles. SELECTIONS : West Brunswick, Bulleen- Templestowe, Beverley Hills, Thornbury, St. Bede's. - KEITH FINDLAY. JUNIOR SECTION 1 We have reached the last round of home and home games and it seems to me that if one is to be a successful tipster one must have a crystal ball. With North beaten for the first time last week, Ormond Juniors putting in a game that was a direct contrast to their seniors' performance, today's draw could provide many surprises. Power House are at home to Ivanhoe and what better way to finish the season than beating a side in the four. The 'Hoes have better form but have been inconsistent in recent weeks - House to win. University Blacks travel to Ormond and both sides will be keen to finish the season on a winning note. The result of this game will not affect either the four or relegation, but after running the boundary at Ormond last week, I must go for the home side. The two sides being relegated meet at Yarra Park where Old Scotch play Hampton Rovers. Scotch have more form than the Rovers at present and are my selection. The game of the day will be at Royal Park, where North Old Boys play Coburg. If the Burgers win and the 'Hoes lose, Coburg make the finals. This is two too many "ifs" for me and North will be making amends for last week's defeat. SELECTIONS : Power House, Ormond, Monash University, Old Scotch, North Old Boys. - PETER NATHAN. JUNIOR SECTION 2 Today sees the end of the home-and away-round as well as the end of the tipping contest. Excitement mounts on both scores. Who will finish second in Junior Section Two and thus gain the coveted double chance? Will there be a last minute change in the composition of the final four? We will know the answers by five o'clock. The main game today could well be a preview of the Grand Final Thomastown travel west to St. Bernard's. Does this mean they will lose? Thomastown had four goals to spare in their June 19th game. As this match will be on St. Bernard's ground and as they have a lot more at stake today than do Thomastown I have a premonition that St. Bernard's will take the points. Caulfield Grammarians must defeat Geelong to be sure of playing in a final. Lately Caulfield have shown little form. Neither has Geelong. So desperation coupled with home ground advantage prompts me to select Caulfield Grammarians. Two battling sides meet at Alphington when Kew travel across the river to their northern neighbour's ground. Alphington have won two games whereas the youngsters from Kew have been unable to open their account. Alphington at home showed enough form against Geelong to warrant me selecting them to defeat Kew. An interesting match will be played at Reservoir between the local High School Old Boys and the visiting Old Paradians. My "advisers" from Parade assure me good form at home this season. On June 19th they accounted for De La Salle by over eighteen goals. These two factors plus the lure of the finals cause me to select West Brunswick (sorry Don I'll keep out of your way this afternoon). DOUBLE CENTURY AT ROVERLAND Congratulations to Peter "Honest " Wolfe who will play his 200th game for Hampton Rovers today. Peter started his career with the club in the Juniors in 1964 and after playing for a little over one season was quickly promoted to the Seniors when the club realised his potential. He has played many fine games on the ball in the forward line at at full-back where his fine marking, drop kicking and team play have earned him admiration and respect from both Hampton and opposition members. He has captained the club and has won many trophies including Best and Fairest, Most Consistent, Most Determined and Best Clubman and has been an activc member of both the Social and General Committees. When Peter is not looking after his family or tied up with the club he relaxes with a game of squash and has no trouble in accounting for. The winners were best served by Sullivan, Santamaria and Hanneberry while Warfe, Sullivan, and Zylan tried to keep Coburg in the game. Coburg trailed all day and were never a threat. Ormond (lst) kicked eight goals in zx brilliant first quarter against University Blues (3rd) and finally won 20.11(131) to 13.14(92). Logan (5 gls.), R. Curtis and Corben starred for Ormond with Barkley, Nicholls and Renowden best for the losers. A battle to avoid relegation between old Scotch and Melbourne High ended in favour of M.H.S. who raced away in the last quarter to win by 31 points. Most exciting game of the round was the desperate battle for survival between Old Xav. and Commonwealth Bank (second last and last in B Section). No satisfaction to either - a draw - 16.13(109) to 15.19(109). Gowers, K. O'Shaughenessy (4) and Iza(iaele (Old Xav.) and Dick, Torrens, inbery for Comm. Bank were best. Reservoir (D Section) with only one loss were the best-performed team in the Association. Leading goalkickers were "A" David Barkley (U. Blues) 81; B Section - Moffat (U. Blacks) 52, C Section - Be% an (Toor-Malv.) 88, D Section - Eccles (P'side) 85, E Section - Shannon (St. Pats.) 98, and F Section - Gartner (Marcellin). First player to score 100 goals was Martin Bartlett of Power House - 53 goals with the seniors and 52 with the juniors. 200 games to veteran player, Was Roach, of Collegians and 100 games to Wayne Jarvie (R.O.B.) and Laurie Fehring (A.N.Z. Bank). 10 YEARS AGO - 1966 200 games to Kell Davidson (Caulf. Gramm.) - the first player ever to achieve that record with the club. In early years a star centre half back he has recently been a devastating forward pocket. John Wall of National Bank also reached 200, and again was the first for the club. M.H.S.O.B. regained top place in A Section following Coburg's sensational defeat by Old Paradians. Coburg led Parade by 26 points at half-time after being well on top but a much more determined Parade blanketed them in second half and won by 10 points. Coburg's only score after the interval was a goal just before the final siren. Proctor, Danaher and Mansfield were best for Old Paradians and McIntosh, Scanlon, and Dumayne for Coburg. Lowest scoring team for the round was A.N.Z. Bank's 2.1.(13) against O.G.G.'s 14.14(98) in D Section. 25 years ago - 195 1 Veteran field umpire Jim Walsh retired after 21 years umpiring Amateur matches. Jim had also been honorary secretary of the Umpires' Association for many years and was remembered by many players as a wonderful umpire. In his playing days Jim used to kick goals for Brighton V.F.A. team. (Readers may remember also Jim's sons, Jim (Junior) who played with Comm. Bank and Brian who starred for Ormond and later went on to play many wonderful games as a back pocket player for St. Kilda. ) In difficult wet and greasy conditions Old Scotch held on to fourth place in A Section with a sound win over Ivanhoe. Brian Thomson and "Baron" Jim Perry (ruck) starred for Old Scotch while Neil Whittaker, Kevin Clarke, and. Len Irvin were best for Ivanhoe. Of the 10 teams in C Section in 1951 only three are left in 1976. PAST PLAYERS AT GEELOi'!G It was a long day at Queen's Park, Geelong, last Saturday but all the festivities failed to rock Old Scotch, who guided by a nervous Laurie Aghan, managed to win their first EVER game at Queen's Park. The commemoration of 50 years of the Geelong club was highlighted by a Past Players' lunch (which went well into the second quarter) and a Woolshed Barbecue after the game. Only casualties were one or two tird club officials by about midnight and the club's celebrated perpetual "Eustace Wilson Pot", a best players' beer-carry ing device, which surprisingly ended up in Tasmania! Among a strong gathering of former players was a solid core of veterans They included the first captain-coach Vic Profitt (1926-30), Ewen Laird (1926 28), Jack Miller (1926-27), Roy Fidgu (1929-33), Pat Wheeler (1928-39), and Bill King (1930-31). Former President Bruce Wemyss (1948-56), Vice-Presiden Eric Beach (1948-50) and Secretary David Shaw (1952-62) were also there. Former players and administrators Bob Poulton (1937), Peter Robinson (1965, and Philip Marshall (1966) are to h congratulated on their efforts towards the success of the day - a most sig nificant %ep towards pioneering a Pas.! Players' -Association THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER-AUGUST 21, 1976 UMPIRE'S CORNE R By KEVIN McKAY UMPIRE'S ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT Ken Jorgensen was early this yea r elected to the top post in our association, prior to this he had been secretary for 3 years, treasurer 3 years and was Vice-President in 1975. Well known in Amateur Football circles, Ken played five seasons with Commonwealth Bank gaining interstate selection in his first year and representing our State a total of 4 times. Not a bad effort for a man who only played 5 seasons. Joining our umpires' association 9 years ago, he has been a regular appointment in "A" section and also umpired in the 1973 carnival series hosted by the V.A.F.A. Last year his services were recognised by the umpires' association when he was elected a Life Member. Ken is one of the best known field umpires in our ranks, and is a mos t KEN JORGENSEN popular person with players, clubs and fellow umpires. A member of the staff of the Commonwealth Bank there is a chance he may be transferred to a country area in the near future; (I hope not). If this does eventuate, his loss will be felt not only by umpires but by all V.A.F.A. members. As president Ken's last formal night when all umpires will be present, will be next Monday night when he will be host at our annual dinner. This season we gained 22 new field umpires, although most were inexperienced, we were fortunate in gaining a few from other bodies who quickly showed their ability and were all promoted during the year. One young man in his first season is Wayne Hinton, whose father (John) umpired in the V.A.F.A. a few years ago. (Wayne runs much faster than his dad. ) Former Assumption Old Boy, Frank Mannix returned after a year away from umpiring and brought his young brother Paul with him. Both are proving to be acquisitions to our ranks. Again in 1976 we have been well served by our experienced men, who have been with us for many years and upon whom we rely so heavily. Do not miss these functions. Saturday 21st (tonight) Progressive Dinner. Monday next 23rd Annual Dinner at Park Royal. This is compulsory for all Field and Goal umpires. A section - Grand Final night (September 18th) at the Stokehouse St. Kilda. Friday October Ist Baron of Beef, at $8.00 per person this is top value. All at Brunswick congratulate Barry "Badgo" Edge on playing his 50th game against National Bank although it has taken "Bazza" 7 years to realise this achievement. Let's hope the next 50 come up a lot quicker. Whilst never showing any great brilliance on the field "Bazza" always battles on regardlessly. BERNARD'S CENTURY St. Bernard's congratulate Paul "Junior" Kennedy on playing his 100th game with the club today. Paul joined us in 1971 from Footscray U.19 as a forward and has had many setbacks (mainly injuries) in his career. For a long time he looked to be a permanent Iteserves' player but his determination and skill have finally won through, for this vear Paul has established himself as a Senior player. An extremely loyal and popular clubman for a "ring in". Paul 11so plays cricket for St. Bernard's. Now a dashing hackman (pity the selecors did not realise this earlier), he was instrumental in our 1975 Reserves Premiership. All his fellow clubmen hope he continues to play many more fine games. i CAULFIELD RESERVES CAPTAIN HITS THE 200 MARK All at Caulfield Grammarians heartily congratulate Ken "Stick" Criswick on playing his 200th game against Marcellin. "Stick" is only the second player at the club to have reached this illustrious milestone - the other being that fine amateur footballer Greg Tootell. "Stick" started with our Juniors when they re-formed in 1963. He was Vice- Captain of the Juniors in that year, but also had his first taste of senior football when he played in the C Grade Finals. He continued to play with the seniors through B Grade into A Grade. After Geoff Tamblyn stepped down, "Stick" took over as captain-coach of our rese rv es side. In the last four years apart from occasional games in the Seniors, he has proven to be a most valuable player in our Reserves. During the practice games at the start of the season, "Stick" broke his collarbone. It was feared that his playing days were ended. However, he made a courageous comeback to resume playing with the club. During the off-season, "Ken" plays cricket with South Melbourne firsts. I hear tell, that he is a much feared spin bowler in district circles. He is a most valuable member of the club both on and off the field a g ain. "Stick", from all of us here at Caul fi eld, congratulations, best wishes for the future, and here's hoping that you play many more seasons with the club. HAMPTON "TON " Hampton Rovers also have another great player making a name for himself in the person of Bruce Bennett who will play his 100th game for the club today. Bruce, the quiet man of the side, or did I mean tight, plays well in any position and his attributes include high marking, long kicking and a little handball.
