at Launceston, in 1967 But South Australia will remember that it was an even longer wait from thc fi rst win, at Perth in 1948, unti l they started their present run In the same city ; 1970 What wil l be the outcome of the next Carnival, presumably at Hobart in 19 ;, South Australia started off very shakily top gear and slammed on 8-1 to 1-1, with a lucky 7-point win over West went in at the interval with a lead Australia in a thrilling finish to the 31 points opening match of the Carnival Victoria went further ahead in t Their burst of six goals in the second third quarter and had it well won term was a big factor in their win three-quarter-time West Australia ag South had the better of things generally lapsed into inaccuracy in the last qu in the first half and led by 20 points at er when they added r 1-7 to be 52 poll the interval West Australia got to within down at the finish five points in the third term only to see But West proceeded to annihilate 1~ South break away and lead by three mania in the early match on the fi goals at three-qua nal d rt er-time :; l and led by almost 10 goals at half-tin It was a ding-dong struggle in the last And this time they kicked straight : quarter with West creeping up to as the last quarter, adding 10-2 to win close as a point, but couldn't get the nearly 24 goals, Simon Beasley, win goal to put them in front of the Carnival Best and Fairest awar,_ Inexperience (none of the West Aus- kicking 12 goals tralian players took part in the Carnival Then came the final game! at Melbourne) and a lack of steadiness in Each side opened with a quick go : front of goal in the vital last quarter and the scores were levelled again at : robbed the West of victory and prevented each but then Victoria forged ahead wc them from causing a major upset 3 goals only to see South score fill, They were really unlucky in hitting the third just before quarter-time post twice and kicked 4-7 for the quarter Victoria looked to be getting on r to South's 3-2 when they added 2 goals and it appear,, Victoria had no trouble in scoring an as if it could be a repetition of rl overwhelming win over Tasmania, their Vic-W A game overall strength, pace and determination Suddenly South Australia cut loose a : being too much for the Tasmanians, who with their big men giving them gr, : however must be given credit for fighting drive and their forwards gaining the ur the game right out to the fi nish per hand, they rushed on 3 goal s Victoria opened with 5 goals in the quick time to take a 1-point lead at ti first quarter, but poor shooting for goal interval in the second term spoilt much of the The home side raced away to a 5-ge good work Victoria added 6-12 in this lead halfway through the third term z quarter to lead by more than 10 goals at the Victorian defenders could do litt, the interval to stem the flood of goals Tasmania showed their best form in At three-quarter-time, South Austral the last quarter when they added 3 goals were in a very strong position wh~ but they were no match for the power- they led by 39 points, and the ful Victorian combination torians were playing well below t i Tasmania put up a better showing form they showed against West Australi ;: against South Australia who were not South stormed forward early in ft impressive in winning by 50 points, their last quarter and ran to a lead of mor inaccurate kicking ( 15-25) pointing to than 8 goals but Victoria fought bac haphazard forward work well and gained a little of their lo West Australia opened in a lively prestige as they added 4 goals manner against Victoria who were strug- But Victoria were unable to go r gling in, the first quarter and trailed by with what was an almost impossiob 11 points at the first change task and South Australia ran out winner But it was a different story in the by 34 points second term as the Victorians got into ( Continued on page 12 1 Page 4 PREVIEWING TODAY'S GAMES A SECTIO N Last week's round again produced, some surprise results At,east surprised me must again thontulat cg r e Monash for tipping the bucket on me University Blues journey out to Coburg and could have too much pace for the Burgher who may be,,rlthout cheeky rover Paul O'Brien, tointerstate seen This cause s after me hi s trip cast my - vote for Blues st Bernard's will be greatly ;trengthened by the return of their five State men and should be able to wear down the inconsistent Old Trinity De La Salle should continue on their recent good form and take the points from giant killers, Monash Blues Although strengthened hy the return of reliable Ross Booth, Monash may not stand up to "De La's pressure tactics Even though they play at home and have the added bonus of coach Peter O'Donohue at the helm again, University Blacks have a poor track record against Reservoir Old Boys Mike Bates and Ray Shepherd return for Reservoir and further confirm them as my choice North Old Boys are at home to Ormond and I see a very even, game in prospect as Ormond reiurn to something of the form that has earned them the respect of all clubs over recent years I must confess to seeking Bruce Bourne's advice on which way to go He said North and I know he ~vouldn't pull my leg Of course he could see me as "Kiss of Death" but nevertheless I will stick to his sound advice My congratulations to all the Victorian Squad who have represented our Association with distinction SELECTIONS - University Blues, St Bernard's, De La Salle, Reservoir Old Boys and North Old Boys - ALF KEAM B SECTION B Gradians can be proud of gaining 8 representatives in the carnival team This is a staggering high percentage and indicates that the two promoted teams next year will do well in A Section Class will always win out and Greg Tootell's great individual performances of 8 goals must be applauded With three Caulfield stars in Adelaide someone had to take command and naturally it was Greg Jim,Fidge - your slip is showing and your sarcasm is on a par with your prediction ability Special Prediction - Old Carey to win their 1st game for 1976 Naturally it is hard to pick the winner of the Old Scotch-Caulfield clash Statistically Caulfield should win but they will have to fit 3 tired carnival players into the team and this should be just enough to give Scotch the edge Cox (9 last week) is moving beautifully and he will be the key to a win I sense a great will to win in the Scotch side today All in all a very even game Old Paradians are back in the four and I do not think they will let Geelong set them back Geelong need a win and will be confident at home but Paradians have the best of two worlds Firstly, they are tight and secondly they have a dominating spearhead who is playing to his real ability Paradians to win well Marcellin are playing so strongly with both forwards and backs participating and they will wear St Kilda CBC down The Marcellin rucks in particular will be a handful of trouble for St Kilda to combat Heading for a double chance will make Marcellin strive for a big win Collegians not disgraced against Marcellin should bounce right back at Harry Scott and defeat Ivanhoe THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - The scores filtered through to Adelaide rather promptly - I've jumped in the Pool and now feel fresh enough to try and pick this week's winners Old Melburnians venture to tombstone Territory to take on "giant killers" Fawkner Our's will have all their big guns out to take the points The inside info, was that Park side would be first to knock off Old Haileybury and if only third in line I'm sure that they will be very pleased - at home I think they can do it Kew will be switched on against Power House and gain four survival points Even though Old Ivanhoe were in the money last week I expect Hampton Rovers to return to the winning list Alphington and UHSOB will be close and the Old Boys' success last week will give them a boost to get the upper hand SELECTIONS - Old Melburnians, Parkside, Kew, UHSOB, Hampton Rovers Congratulations to all the carnival boys who performed so well i n Page 6 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER-JULY 17, 1976 Adelaide even though they didn't!and-the bacon - ALEX JOHN- SON D SECTION Good sides seem to get over their mid-season slumps - here's hoping the tipsters, pre- sumptuous saphoughtit to consider myself "good" Five last week but I think my chances this week are brittle as I only pick one home side And that's a danger game - AJAX at home to Assumption AJAX have not been winning by as much in recent weeks - perhaps it's because "that man" has been over in Adelaide! Nevertheless, look out today I have a sneaky suspicion that even while consistency must force me to lean cowards AJAX, Assumption who appear back in business, could upset that long AJAX winning sequence We will see! I saw State Bank for a quarter or so last week and they looked good! Brunswick were goalless until mid third term but then improved as the Bank appeared to relax "Porky" Brennan drove home a classy goal for the Bank while Jeff Inglis took a magnificent mark which he followed with an equally talented goal that was comparable to anything you will see in our higher Sections If the Bank keep playing like most of last week they can make the four The Old Brighton ground is an old State Bank strongpost so I predict Bank to adapt readily and beat Old Brighton who are always dangerous at Brighton Beach Old Camberwell, the other chance for fourth place, are doing everything right and will beat Old Geelong who disappointed against Assumption last week That consistent form of recent weeks looks like it will really pay off for Camberwell i WHOLESALE-SUPPLY an d ENGRAVIN G Comprehensive range of trophies Presentation and Gift s SILVER, PEWTER and STAINLESS WARE CLOCK S PARKER PEN S JOHN F HICKMAN 94 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne (Opp Hotel London) Illustrated Brochures on Request THE AM ATEUR FOOTBALLER-JULY 17, 1976 Page 7

5 Print Old Xavs have come good and will not be troubled by poor old National Bank whose stocks are as low as can be It's a chance for the Xavs to bolster percentage which is the weaker of the top four The "wicks" meet at Brunswick and this game could be more interesting than would first appear Elsternwick still with final four aspirations, will get the points but as was evident last week if you relax when playing Brunswick, that team can come to life SELECTIONS - Old Camberwell, AJAX, Elsternwick, State Bank, Old Xave ri ans - JIM FIDGE E SECTION Syd Whitfield has been away and his return to Melbourne has been delayed Consequently his preview will not appear this week SELECTIONS - St Kevin's North Brunswick, Heatherton, Old Mentonians, AMP Society - GEORGE McTAGGART F SECTION West Brunswick have assured me that they do not believe in midseason slumps by having "a resounding win over University Reds With eleven matches played, it was not a bad effort to be undefeated in both seniors and reserves This week Bulleen-Templestowe meet Bulleen United and the outcome will be in favour of the visitors, Bulleen United, who have been more consistent in the last few weeks Footscray IT and St Bede's could be an interesting game but I don't think that the bridesmaid team St Bede's'will give too much and should be the victors Although Beverley Hills have shown good promise they just won't have the ability to "knock off" West Brunswick, there is nothing more that can be said about this game The battle for the wooden spoon could be interesting with the two universities fighting it out; on form La Trobe Reds will be too strong for University Reds Page 8 The Thornbury-Glenroy matc}l will be a tough affair and even though Glenroy usually prove me wrong, I will go for home side Thornbury to win the day SELECTIONS - Bulleen Uiuted, St Bede's, West Brunswick, La Trobe Reds, Thornbury - KEITH FINDLAY JUNIOR SECTION 1 We are now two-thirds of the way through the home-and-home games and this is the time when many upsets can occur We have sides trying to avoid relegation, attempting to make the four and in some sections endeavouring to remain unbeaten With Thomastown beaten last week, Old Haileybury the week before, the big question in this section is whether North Old Boys can maintain concentration Power House are at home to North Old Boys this week and coach Gary Boyd will be keen for his players to knock off the unbeaten side As the saying goes, House have everything to gain and nothing to lose, but Gary will understand if I select North on form Hampton Rovers are at least three games plus percentage shor t of' avoiding relegation, with six games to go University Black g s should have no trouble in winnin this game Old Scotch are at home to Coburg but they will find the visitors' strength and determination too much to overcome Ivanhoe trail Monash University by one and a half games and percentage but they have a home ground advantage, together with a rough chance of getting the double chance for the finals With Steve Giles and Mark Hodge in form I must go for Monash I have left the most difficult game until last On form University Blues should beat Ormond, but Ormond suffered a bad defeat ;at the hands of North Old Boys last week and will be keen to make amends This, THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER-JULY 17, 1976 combined with their home ground advantage, has convinced me to select Ormond SELECTIONS - North Old Boys, University Blacks, Coburg, Monash University, Ormond - PETER NATHAN JUNIOR SECTION 2 What a day of surprises Round 12 provided in Junior Section 2 The two leaders were beaten convincingly As I write I feel like the lion in the Wizard of Oz as I too lacked the courage of my convictions last Saturday Undaunted, I must continue to try to select five winners today Caulfield Grammarians disappointed last Saturday They wilted badly as West Brunswick applied pressure and their players' ears must still be ringing from the stinging reprimand delivered by George Voyage at lemon time The double chance and with it promotion opportunity is at stake today for Caulfield who should be able to defeat Alphington, battling out their first season The match of the round will be played at St Bernard's where West Brunswick are the visitors St Bernard's bounced back last week with a victory albeit one over the bottom side On the other hand West Bruns- %vick really hit top form with a ten goal burst in the third quarter Confidence is now high in the Magpie nest and bearing in mind their May 15 victory over St Bernard's I am confident West Brunswick can take the points today The clash of the brown and gold sides at Thomastown could prove a torrid afternoon for the visitors from Kew Thomasown will win and Kevin Rodgers will be out to insure each of his Thomastown players gives all to erase memories of last week's loss Giant killers Old Paradians make the journey to Geelong If the finals were played in July, Old Paradians would be pennant favourites I tip a big win for the visitors as Old Paradians strive to build percentage Reservoir Old Boys still have final's aspirations and despite their A Section side borrowing players they should record a victory over De La Salle today on the Barling Reserve SELECTIONS - Caulfield Grammarians, West Brunswick, Thomastown, Old Paradians, Reservoir Old Boys - NORM NUGENT BALL BRIEFS OLD MELBURNIAN PLAYS 150th Thirteen years ago, at the age o f nitneteen, Dave Wilson played his first season with Old Melburnians Since then "Willow" has risen to fame, not only as "Willow the Wizard of Football", but also and especially as one of the club's favourite characters - something like "Willow the Wacker" The O and O M players M supporters all know Dave well and look forward to his company for many years to come Congratulations Dave Wilson on 150 STATE BANKER REACHES 150 Congrat's to Jeff Inglis who today i s playing his 150th game with State Savings Bank Jeff joined the club in 1968 and in that time has achieved just about everything a footballer wishes for He has won a Best and Fairest, played in a premiership side and officiated on both the social and general committees He has been a great member of the club and the sort of player every coach wants He won his Best and Fairest on the half-back flank, has played in the centre and is currently having a great season roving The club congratulates Jeff on reaching such a milestone and hope he continues his great service FOOTSCRAY VETERAN BREAKS CLUB RECORD Last week against Beverley Hills Geoff Fletcher broke the Footscray Tech all time club record of 245 games held by Robert Sharp Geoff first started playing with the club in 1958 In 18 years, as both a talented and consistent dedicated player he is renowned for his committee membership for 10 years, which was capped off by his being elected as president for the 1976 season Geoff's prominent role in club's activities has been accentuated by playing in grand finals both in 1964 and 1968, in which the club was successful in the latter He was Captain-Coach in 1972 and coach in 1973 and 74 Congratulations on this tremendous achievement Geoff, and we hope that you stay with us for many more seasons on our way tq the top, THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER-JULY 17, 1976 Page 9

7 Ptint LOOKING BACK BY NOEL RUNDLE 5 years ago games to John (Egg) Elliott the first Old Carey player to reach that number Captain from 1962 to 1965, John won the Best and Fairest trophy in the club's 1961 premiership team A double century also to Dennis Davies of St Kevin's Old Boys - as the scribe said "a bachelor gay, he is believed to be losing his grip of late" Collegians and M HSOB staged a "relegation-saver" game with High kicking 52 to 12 in the third quarter to seal the game and win by 19 points Collegians suffered a setback when Vice-Captain, Phil Pryor was carried off unconscious on a stretcher and taken to hospital after an accidental blow to the head Vengeance was Old Trinity's when they easily defeated Assumption, 21 9 to 88 at Elsternwick Park Fletcher, G Fellows ( 5 goals) and Emerson were best while Stevens and Phil Cohen each kicked 6 goals 10 years ago In the worst weather conditions for some years, three leading teams were defeated - Melbourne High, Old Carey (on top in "D" Section) and AJAX, who suffered their first loss for the season at the hands of Assumption who lead all day and won, 1116 to 8 6 Jackson, McMahon and Munari (Assumption) and Janover, Duzenman, and Perelberg (AJAX) were best Surprise of the day was backman "Crash" McMahon's 2 goals Top "C" Section sides, St Bernard's and Old Brighton staged a low-scoring thriller with the home side victors 5 6 to 5 5 Mudlarks were Reidy, K Hampson, Mahoney (St Bernard's) and Berry, Code, and D Myers (Old Brighton) Page games up to John Taylor (Kew), Bruce Ferrall (A MP) Best "trueboot" performance of the round - Geelong's Guy L~Tilson with 6 goals against Preston 25 years ago Commonwealth Bank continued their hoodoo run over Ormond who took a one-point lead in time-on only to see Bank clear the ball down to a certain ruckman who held the mark of the day and capped a magnificent display with the winning goal (Gympie 's press correspondent believed in anonymity - will your archives give the ruck man's name?) Or as Ormond scribe, Dr J, R Porter, penned "The fickle dame transferred her affections in our encounter with the Bank A fei chips light in that settlement" Col Campbell, Ron McFarlane, and Laurie Holman were Ormond's best In "B" Section Geelong held off a determined finish by visitors Alphington who kicked 3 goals and a poster in 4 minutes to get within 7 points when Tom Russell tore through to goal with a long punt, Alan Vizard, with clever scouting, kicked 4 goals for the home side, Another Carnival is over - (Continued from page 4) It's hard to explain how Victoria lost certainly injuries to several key players didn't help their chances, and perhaps the hard game against West Australia three days previously (and it certainly *as a vigorous one) had more effect than at first thought South Australia was certainly the better side on the day - and that was what counted as far as the records are concerned The fact that they just scraped home from West Australia and were not impressive against Tasmania, in contrast to Victoria's efforts against these two states, is of little concern The score book shows that South Australia won all three games and Victoria won only two Our congratulations to them THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - JULY 17, 1976 UMPIRE'S C ORNER By KEVIN McKAY ~ Reply to "F" section club , you are quite correct, the coach of eam is NOT permitted to act as a nne r, X gain n you are right, any player ne part in the game must have his ne and correct number on the team Itcply to "B" section coach Re centre square - If a player opponen t ehcentre e at a centre bounce, ne boundary umpire does not blow his rhistle - He tells the offending player " cut it out" and he must also tell he field umpire when he gets the op- -,,rtunity - there is no penalty against he player pushed over the line 1 2, ;,Io - an umpire cannot report an itence he does not see - it is similar tfi'e awarding of a free kick - h e ;vust see the infringement - so also n ust see the reportable Incident - e niust not report what he thinks may nace An occurred interesting rule 18 which reads No free kick shall be given against a, ;;iyer who, in legitimately going for a nark, interferes with an opponent from ~ ehind,~otice the words "Legitimately going or a mark " If a player is not legi-»ately going for a mark" he is open to -enalty if he interferes with the player r},ine to mark the ball 'Therefore the opponent flying into he air with a clenched fist takes the isk of a penalty Hc surely can't be "legitimately tryto mark" with a clenched fi st The,p oiler takes all the chances of being ir'e kicked Holding the" man - means a player ith tine ball must be held firmly enough stop him or retard his progress - Retarding does not mean completely t i stopping, to check or ease down a man's progress is sufficient Take the instance of a 10 stone man trying to stop a man of some 15 stone He could "retard" him but the odds are he would not stop him Do you, know? That the free kick for deliberately forcing the ball "out of bounds" was introduced as far back as 1922? That in 1930 the Football Council adopted the principle of allowing a substitute for an injured player In 1921 the Williamstown v Footscray (V F A) final match was abandoned during the third quarter on account of a terrific hailstorm I 'Social" Many umpires are at present spending Sunday mornings on the goif course, preparing for our annual Golf Championship;at Torquay David Dressing is again in control of the arrangements and is now accepting entries This - is one day during the season that is for all the family David is again allowing us to use the "dressing shed" beach house for our barbeque The date is Sunday July 25th - if you can't play golf, it doesn't matter - come along and learn from the masters - or go direct to the house for lunch - Tee time is a m to 1100 a m Lunch time is when you are hungry All umpires and their families are invited to join in this day Old Trinity `congratulates Rob Peers on reaching his 50th, game last week Rob played his first full season in 1974 and has been a key member of the side ever since So far he has won the club's Best and Fairest (1975), been runner-up (1974), and won the best first year player (from the school) trophy (1974) He has also been a member of four final sides, including the 1974 B-Grade Premiership team Rob is a very skilful player, and has the ability to take a big grab from a leap ' He is also capable of the long kick straight through the middle So far he has scored 59 goals for the Firsts Well done, "B B " The ball officially approved for use in all VFL matches since Ttle name our game grew up with!
