Both Marcellin and North Old Boys have "easy" last round games so today's match will see the winner with the only chance of continuing towards the four. The other two teams are Ormond and Old Melburnians who both have hard roads to hoe and if they get through this round today they meet at Ormond next week. St. Kilda, desperate to remain in B Section, await Caulfield Grammarians whose 1981 Section is as yet undecided. Caulfield had a convincing win in the May 31 game. However, they will find the Coghlan Oval conditions far different from Oval 3. For Caulfield, Buchanan could again do well up forward. Matthews, Hood and the reliable Wakeham will all endeavour to lift Caulfield. However, I believe St. Kilda will triumph. The old adage "a good big man will outplay a good little man" will again bear fruit today when the undersized Old Paradians return to their former ground to play Old Xaverians. Although less than half the Parade players have played on this ground, their supporters can be excused for reliving their halcyon days of the 'sixties. I have no doubt the Old Xaverians will play a prominent role in the finals. Today I do not expect the Paradians to be able to outplay Curtain (11 goals on May 31), Corcoran, Caleo, Sierakewski, Noonan, Burne, Vale, Adgemis, Blake, Stanley, Tiernan and their nine team mates enough to kick a winning score. Sam Assetta, Chris Hughes, plus youngsters like Alex Morelli, Phillip Hammond and Stephen Watson will strive hard for the Paradises before they succumb to superior opposition. Selections : Fawkner, Kew, Cofleqians, C.B.C. St. Kilda, Old Xaverians. - NORM NUGENT, C SECTIO N My consistency continues with another three wins. An examination of the premiership lists reveals that this is the only Section where all sides are either involved in the battle for the four (the top seven) or the fight to avoid relegation (the bottom three). Geelong scraped in by the narrowest of margins last week against bottom side Coburg and today they await the arrival of St. Kevin's O.B., whose form reads like Melbourne weather - unpredictable! While it is do or die for the visitors, they will be lost on the big expanse of Queen's Park. However, the Geelong forwards will need to improve on their performances of the last two weeks. Old Camberwell Grammarians fell into a hole last week and while they will have littl e 4 chance of beating their hosts Old Brighton Grammarians, they will surely be watching for the results of the Coburg v M.H.S. game. if Coburg win today and Camberwell lose, next week's game between these two will be the "grand final" of the relegation stakes. The only interest in today's game will be how many goals "Jumping" John Priestley kicks and whether he can make the "ton". The Coburg machine must be feeling happy with their form but disappointed with the results of the last few weeks. They are at home for the second consecutive week and there is no doubt that this is worth two or three goals. M.H.S.O.B. must win to have a chance for the finals, albeit remote. For the last seven weeks the students have been on a lose/win sequence and if this continues they are due to win today. Nevertheless I am going for Coburg, probably because of their good form against Geelong last week. Old Haileyburians kept their chances alive last week and should be a natural against Old Trinity Grammarians. However, Trinity picked up the "Bloods" scalp in the first round and they must win today if they are to have any chance of avoiding relegation as they play top side Old Brighton next week. I selected Trinity in the first round and to keep things even my choice today is Haileybury. The match-of-the-day sees Buf!een-Tempiestowe at home to Hampton Rovers. The Rovers have lost their last three and Ian Cooper will no doubt be "pulling his hair out" trying to find a way to lift his players by example and encouragement. Quaife and Chard have been accurate on the forward line for the B-T's and they will want to avenge their first round defeat. This was the first of five consecutive defeats, which thought must leave a sour taste in their mouths. The game is shaping as a preview of the first semi-final. I fancy the Rovers as they have the knack of putting in that extra effort in hard games. Selections : Old Brighton, Old Haileyburians, Hampton Rovers, Coburg, Geelong. - PETER NATHAN. D SECTIO N Last Saturday there were no real surprises, with the sides who held the higher position on the ladder all defeating their opponents. Today, Power House, who last Saturday defeated Beverley Hills to record their fourth consecutive win, visit State Bank. Power House have now a faint chance of making the final four due to the current lapse in form of Old Carey. State Bank had a narrow, three-point win over Old Ivanhoe last week and they are now waiting for St. Bede's to make a slip, so that they can get the double chance. State Bank won by five points last time these sides met and I can see them winning again today, thus ending Power House's late run to the four. Alphington were held to their lowest score Old this season, last week but they sti!l won. Today Ivanhoe Grammarians visit them and they will he trying to keep the free-scoring Alphington to a similar total. Old Ivanhoe have been playing reasonably well lately but, apart from holding onto sixth spot on the ladder, they have not much to look forward to this season. Beverley Hills after three close finishes in a row, were defeated by forty-five points by Power House last week. They are back on their home ground today and will provide spirited opposition for Country Colleges, who defeated A.M.P. last week and now require one more win to avoid relegation. Last time these sides met, Country Colleges won by thirty-three points after an even first half. Most sides have struggled to win at Zerb!es Oval this season and Country Colleges will have to be at their top to win and I will go for them to produce the goodies today. Last week, St. Bede's O.C. came back well from their thrashing by Alphington the previous week to defeat Old Carey by sixteen points in a!ow scoring game. Today, on their home ground again, they Play Heatherton, who, last week were beaten by Alphington in another low-scoring affair. If Heatherton win today they may go up a rung on the ladder, but St. Bede's have the extra incentive to win as a lapse in form will see them surrender second spot to the State Bank. St. Bede's will repeat their seven-goal win of the first round. Old Carey Grammarians lost their fourth game in rive weeks and they now have only two more games to get their act back together before the finals. Last week they managed only four goals at wet and windy Beda Park and today, on their home ground, they Play A.M.P. Society who had all sorts of trouble in kicking the ball through the goals last week against Country Colleges. A.M.P. must win today to avoid re!egation, but going on their current form they do not look capable of doing it, despite Old Carey's current performances. Selections : State Bank, Alphington, Country Colleges, St. Bede's O.C., Old Carey Gram. - WILLY PICKHAM. E SECTIO N The first two positions in the four are assured of a game in the finals, but the next two places could be swinging seats until the last home and home games. Old Geelong had the opportunity to clinch their position in third place, but were beaten after a very tight tussle with West Brunswick. ~'entone, Thornbury and Old Geelong are eligible for the two vacant positions. Out of these three Old Geelong meet Mentone at Como Park, and this will be a very close match being very important to both teams. Thornbury will be hosts to ANZ and again this will not be a one-sided game but it is essential to Thornbury that they get the points. Bulleen United are starting to come good at the end of the season, and managed a drawn game last week against a much stronger North Brunswick. This week they visit St. Pius who will be too strong for them. U.H.S.O.B. at home to La Trobe. A very important game for the home side as relegation could hinge on this game and the same will apply with the match ANZ away to Thornbury this being equally vital to ANZ. West Brunswick are at their peak of form and I cannot see North Brunswick giving them any worries. Selections : All home sides! St. Pius, Old Geefong, U.H.S.O.B., Thornbury, West Brunswick. - NUGGET STEPHENS. F SECTIO N Monash Whites v Uni. Reds Brunswick v Thomastown. Brunswick don't have to win this match to retain their place in the four, but if they can't make a game of it, why bother. On the other hand, a win over the Hairy Ones would give their promotion prospects a boost and could put the club on the way back to A Section. So, for what it is worth, I offer my support to the Dirty Reds and will pray for rain during the week, thus ensuring that ability and skill won't matter. Peninsula O.B. v Common. Bank. Peninsula are in the four with a chance, are playing at home and Bankers aren't. I think the Bankers will end the season with a 50/50 score ie., lose this week, win the following. POB's to consolidate. Footscray IT v Banyule. The Fitites didn't go so well on the Harry Trott (watching the girls' basketball?) whilst Banyule must have thought it was Christmas. I hope that they derived sufficient pleasure from their great win to enable them to survive the season and come up fresh in '81, because I expect the Fitites to bring them back to earth today. Therry C.C.O.B. v St. John's. Therry haven't fared as well this season as last, but haven't been disgraced. They should be able to take care of St. John's at home, in fact should be able to practice some tricky moves for their last game of the year against the Hairy Ones. Coolaroo Rovers v Clayton. Coolaroo should have enough to take care of Clayton even after the mental devastation suffered recently. Clayton haven't been good enough but at least they know now what is needed for the future. Selections : Brunswick, Peninsula O.B., Footscray IT, Therry C.C.O.B., Coolaroo. - SYD WHITFIELD. JUNIOR SECTION 1 A direct telecast of the V.A.F.A. results to us over here in down-town San Francisco show that the results almost went "according to Hoyle". The fight for the final four is almost as desperate as my battle to stop on top of the tipping ladder. Congratulations to all winners and all the best for all teams for the last two weeks of the "home-and-away" games. Kew, who have battled manfully for the whole year face top side St. Bernard's in what is a "herculean task" for them. The Saints will be anxious to go into the Finals on winning notes and will be too strong for the Kew Boys. Old Haileyburians face Ivanhoe in what should be a comfortable lead up to the important part of the year. The "Hoes" will battle it out manfully to the end and I'm hopeful for a great display from them but I feel the "Bloods" will be a!ittle too strong. 4 PREVIEWS (contd.) they are to be in the last desperate struggle for this years finals. Both teams have been great competitors during the season and this game will be a great test of strength and courage. I have a feeling that North Old Boys' ability is a little above that of Ormonds but the "Monds" brain trust will certainly be at their most active. I tip North Old Boys in a close game. Another vital game is Melbourne University and De La Salle. Once again the pressure will be on both sides to win in what will be a close and thrilling match. Melbourne University have shown some great form during the season as has the De La Salle side, but the University side I think have that bit of class that will get them the four points. Hampton Rovers meet Coburg in a game that has no great bearing on the four but is sure to be full of interest. Both sides have shown form during the year and can look forward to the future. I think Hampton Rovers home ground and better handling ability will get them the points. Selections : St. Bernard's, Old Haileyburians, No rt h Old Boys, Melbourne University and Hampton Rovers.. - M. J. ARNOLD JUNIOR SECTION 2 Another clean sweep but I'm unable to run down Mick Arnold. I think I should point out to all my fellow tipsters what a desperate position we are all in. Firstly, despite the fact that Mick Arnold's sending his selections courtesy of Western Union or pony express or whatever, he still leads. Secondly Mick wouldn't know one end of a bag of wind from the other because his sporting prowess has always been confined to indoor activities. So if he does hang on and win you can rest assured that we'll never hear the end of it. So fellows, your peace of mind is in your hands (or should I say, heads). Back to more mundane matters. Today's games provide only one interesting match, this being at Bundoora. Fawkner journey to the small but picturesque ground at MHS and should score a lot of goals (about 30 I would say) at MHSOB's expense. Therry travel out to the unusually windswept Marcellin ground. However this should not prevent them from scoring a big victory. Old Scotch didn't have things all their own way at MHS Oval last week but should find things a little easier today against West Brunswick. Bulleen-Templestowe v Old Old Paradians features a clash of two finalists. First time round, O.P.'s won by 5 goals and with the home-ground advantage I believe O.P.'s will consolidate their grasp on top spot. Monash Blues are now eliminated from the finals race after last week's loss to O.P.'s. I would not be surprised at this stage if the M.U. boys call a premature end to the season. However, they'll probably find 18 starters and wfn over Caulfield. Selections : Fawkner, Ol d Scotch, Old Paradians, Monash. - RON HANCOX. 6 JUNIOR SECTION 3 Last week saw the top five teams win -_ thus occasioning no change in their standings - and Power House move a game clear of the twelfth spot which they have occupied for most of the season. Today will have a different result as the top four clash and Power House meet St. Kevin's O.B. This is St. Kevin's chance to move back into the four and I fancy that even the newfound form of the home side will not be enough to deny them the points. St. Kevin's to win. Top-side Banyule are hosts to fourth placed Old Brighton Grammarians. Banyule will be keen to win to eliminate the faint possibility that they could lose the double chance. Old Brighton must win to stay in the four but I don't think they will be quite good enough on the day. The other big clash sees second and third place holders, Thomastown and St. Kilda C.B.O.C., meeting at Thomastown. A loss to either will prove extremely costly. The home side could lose the double chance, the visitors could lose their finals' berth altogether. I'll go for the home side to win what should be a close tussle. Old Ivanhoe Grammarians at home should be too strong for Parkside. Similarly Heatherton should be able to return to the winners' list at the expense of their visitors, St. Pius. Both Clayton and St. Bernard's (B) have been disappointing this year. I'll go for St. Bernard's (B) to win away from home today - because they occupy the higher position on the ladder. 5 BALL BRIEF S 100TH TO OLD CAMBERWELL CAPTAIN Old Camberwell's captain David "It's Cool" Steven played his 100th game against M.H.S.O.B. and everyone connected with the club congratulate him on reaching this milestone. A strong and courageous ruck rover whose style of play has made him a vital player in the Senior side since he was recruited from the school in A very popular member of the Club, Dave was appointed, captain of the club in A talkative player on the field he makes Kevin Sheedy and Alec Epis sound like amateurs. Besides ruck roving Dave has served the Wells well in many other positions - back-pocket, centreman, and half-back flanker. As a halfback, Dave played strong defensive football in the 1978 finals to help win the '78 flag. A noted mud runner, Dave loves the wet, fortunately Helen has been put onto "drive". Off the field Dave has given the club fine service as a committeeman. Well done Dave - now for 150! RAY BAINBRIDGE PLAYS 100 GAMES Ray Bainbridge played his 100th game for Old Ivanhoe against State Bank. 'Bainbo" joined the club in 1975 and has therefore reached this milestone in relatively short time. Ray is a versatile player who can play equally well in many positions. He is also a skillful player who has played many fine games for the club. All at Old Ivanhoe congratulate Ray on his achievement and look forward to his reaching 200. WABBIT'S TON State Bank's Peter Wabbis played his 100th game with the club last week. "Wabbit" runner-up in the Reserves' Best and Fairest last year, has also won the most improved trophy in the Firsts. A committeeman on both the Social and General committees, "Wab" gives as much off the field as on. All the best Peter from everyone, and may the next 100 be as good as the first. All at Old Trinity congratulate Peter Beer and Broughton 'Bluey" Lumsden on playing their 50th games for the club. Both have been great clubmen both on and off the field since joining from the school. Peter has worked his way from the Seconds into being a regular member of the Firsts and Bluey" is now a regular member of the Seniors and seems to have developed into the favourite of the girls at the club. Al joined the Wells from Old Scotch in 1977, and is a fearless hard tackling player with a tear through style who always goes in for the "hard ball". Al has played mostly as a rover or wingman and has put in many scintillating though at times volatile displays. A very popular club member, Al has a quiet, philosophical manner off the field that belies his fierce desire on the ground - Well done "Mad Monk" and hope your future studies will not restrict your more earthly pursuits on the football field. Paul Considine, Greg O'Toole and Dean Zabrieszach all achieved this milestone. Dean first played in 1976 with the successful Under 19 Premiership Team, while "Conno" and "Otis" were members of the Under 19 Premiership Team of 1978 in their first year. Dean has had an interupted career due to injury and other commitments but his speed on the arena and ball handling are always a pleasure to watch. Conno moved into senior ranks last year and has certainly proved that he will be a player of the future Otis continued with the Under 19's last year, reaching the Senior ranks this season. His determination has made him a valuable player in the Reserve Eighteen. Congratulations Dean, Paul and Greg from all at North Old Boys. Jerome has now established himself as a regular Senior player with a versatility that makes him one of the first players picked at Selection Night. La Trobe supporters had the rare privilege of witnessing the football class of occasional boundary umpire and ratbag revolutionary Peter McGrath recently. Peter is a very modest footballer, who refuses to show his ability except on rare and special occasions. One notorious football judge suggested that Peter had the brilliance of Alex Jesaulenko (well, would you believe Mrs. Jesaulenko?) Peter, also known as Mr. Magic, has been around the club for many years, and was Club Secretary in It is also believed that Mr. Magic has scored two goals in his career. Would the half-forward line ever be the same without Mr. Magic? The member's flank at La Trobe once again salutes Peter Tunbridge, vice-captain and rover, for another fine season of courageous football. Tunner has won the last two best and fairest awards and this season achieved interstate selection, a well-deserved recognition of his consistent performances. Tunna has seen a lot of the ground lately, and developed the neat trick of seeing fingers coming out of his ears. He is also going to paint a target on his jumper. Also performing very well are Simon Hast, Shane Westley and the dancing dorsal, John "Fish" Condon, who is always good for a goal or two. And speaking of the member's flank, Dino Reynolds was in good form at last week's cultural extravanganza, despite the absence of John Solomon. V.A.F.A. GOLF DAY The third annual V.A.F.A. Golf Day will be held on Friday, 31st October at Riversdale Golf Club. Once again the format will be golf in the afternoon and a dinner in the evening. Each competing club will have four players who can be anyone associated with, or prepared to represent your particular club. This event has become one of the more enjoyable days in the Amateur Football year and, because the number of teams able to compete is limited to 20, we suggest early applications. Blues (sixth) in a low-scoring game. Ormond kicked 3 goals against the wind in the last quarter and beat Melbourne High by 26 points. It was High's third successive defeat but they held their place in the four as a result of Monash's defeat. Alphington's devastating first term, 7.3 to Ormond's 2.0, gave them a firm grip on the game to run out winners by 37 points. Best were Harris, Fuge (5 goals), E. Old Paradians battling to Aet in the 'B' Section four, kicked themselves out of it by scoring 4.23 against Collegians, and losing by 5 goals. 14 l1nip1res' CORNE R HANDBALL One of the distinctive features of Australia n Rules football is handball. Modern coaching techniques have brought handball into even greater prominence in recent years to the point where there are some games in which there are more hand passes than kicks. Good handball contributes to the speed and spectacle of our game. It is sometimes forgotten that the rules of the game make clear provision for what is and what is not legitimate handball. Rule 11 provides that : "A player may handball by holding the ball in one hand and hitting it with the clenched fist of the other hand. If the ball is not handballed correctly, a free kick shall be given to the nearest opponent." So handball is clearly holding the ball with one hand and striking it with the CLENCHED FIST of the other hand. The hand holding the ball must not deliver or propel the ball. The ball must be despatched by the force of the clenched fist. It is not compulsory for the hand holding the ball to be still - it may move in any direction. The ball must be held on one hand. It must not be juggled or thrown, nor should the hand holding the ball be pulled away before the ball is propelled with the clenched fist of the other hand. A player may not hand or throw the ball to a team mate. A free kick would be awarded to the nearest opponent. However, if a player deliberately grabs or pulls the ball from another player the umpire should call "play on". A player is permitted to hit the ball with the open hand provided he is not holding the ball with the other hand at the time. Should the ball be on the ground or in the air a player can legitimately hit the ball with the open and ("palm"). Players may legitimately tap the ball out in front of them to assist them in gaining possession. Scooping the ball is a form of throwing and as such, using one hand or two hands, is a breach of the rules. Whilst the ball is in play, no player is permitted to throw the ball in any circumstances. BALL BRIE F 250 GAMES AT ALPHINGO N Barry Shearer today becomes only the third person to reach the 250-game mark at Alphington. During this time, Barry has served the Club magnificently both on and off the field, having won best and fairest awards, been Club Captain, Committeeman, V.A.F.A. member, topped off with being made a life member. Barry's marking and kicking have always shown out in his game, and together with his hard but fair play, has earned the respect and plaudits of not only our Club, but also of his many opponents over the seasons. BALL BRIEF 250 TO OLD CAMBERWELL STALWART All Old Camberwell players and supporter s congratulate Peter Robinson on playing his 250th game for the 'Wells against Old Haileyburians. One of the stalwarts of the Club, "Robo" joined Old Camberwell shortly after its foundation in Peter can remember the times it was necessary to play two games a day in order to field two sides. Aren't you glad that's not necessary now, Pete? These days Peter plays in the Reserves, where his fine ruck work and good ball ploy provides leadership, inspiration and solidarity to our younger players. A Life Member of the Club, Peter has won many awards over the years, including best and fairest in 1964, 1967, 1973 and His good play still earned him a game in the seniors this year. Off the field, Peter is a great asset to the Club as a jack of all trades and maintenance man, and has served on the Committee for numerous years in various capacities, including Secretary in 1968 and 1976 (when he learnt the constitution by rote).
