There were the usual upsets - and the predictable wins. Therry C.C.O.B. in Junior 2 acquitted themselves remarkably well when it is considered that they had virtually no notice of their inclusion into the competition. Many club members were still stunned, on Sunday, that they had managed "to "get organized" in time. The question of how they outfitted the side is a puzzle yet. Both Fawkner and Parkside were well in their game at three-quarter time but could not withstand last-quarter bursts by Old Melburnians and Collegians. Perhaps experience is the key factor here. A serious lack of co-operation was exhibited by several clubs when it came to 'phoning scores to the "Herald" or to Press Correspondent Arthur Goudy. Probably the worst offenders were a couple of D Section Clubs (who shall, at this stage, remain anonymous) whom Arthur had "to chase" for their final scores - one Club unsuccessfully. There is no need for this to happen - it causes considerable trouble - and maybe more importantly costs the Clubs money. 3 PREVIEWING TODAY'S GAM ES A SECTION Three out of five was not a great start to my tipping career. I'll certainly think twice about tipping anyone, even North, to beat St. Bernard's at home. They really do have an amazing record out at the school oval. My other mistake was that I obviously underestimated Ivanhoe. New coach Max Condie has a young, enthusiastic side and they look set for a good year. Their first big test comes today out at their new ground at Waringal Park where they meet St. Bernard's. The return of captain Charles Stradwick this week will further strengthen the 'Hoes and 'm tempted to pick them, but it's difficult to go past Gus Mitchell's boys. They took everything North could throw at them last week and came out on top. St Bernard's to win a close one. The other big game is at Elsternwick Park where No rt h Old Boys play Old Scotch. North lost a close one last week and will be in a mean mood today. Scotch, on the other hand, overpowered Ormond in the second half last week and will approach this game with plenty of confidence. It is Scotch's first big test and I, for one, will be very interested to see how they fare. I mentioned last week that they have a lot of marking strength, but I suspect North might be too fast and strong for them today. University Blacks play Marcellin at the University and will win weli. They gave De La a good run for their money last week with ruckman Peter Birch and little men Geoff Holland and Al Fisher starring. Marcellin disappointed the A Grade tipster as well as their supporters last week when they went down to Ivanhoe. They have been hard hit by injuries, but they won't get much sympathy from Bob Beynon's Blacks. University Blues have never won at the old Ormond ground, so will appreciate Ormond's change of venue this year. The home side disappointed against Scotch, while Blues had a mammoth win over Caulfield, The Uni. side will find things a lot harder today, but I think they can make it two out of two and stay on top. Caulfield played poorly last week, but will perform better at Albert Park. The loss of Lester, Morphet, Buchanan, Butcher and Mc- Donald from the Senior side is more than most clubs could handle and they must meet De La Salle today without the services of Interstate ruckman John Griffiths. De La have not hit premiership form yet, but should win well today. Today's winners : St. Bernard's, North Old Boys, Uni. Blacks, Uni. Blues and De La Salle - PETER BRUKNER. B SECTIO N 'Welcome to 'B' Grade." This greeting was extended to three of the new sides in the Section, along with a polite lesson in how to play football. Each of the new teams lowered their colours, although the Fawkner boys kicked over 100 points in a losing score. Today we see Old Melburnians take on Old Paradians at the Cordner Oval. O.M.'s, after their great win at Fawkner last week, should continue their winning run with another victory today. Parkside at home face up to a very keen Old Haileybu ry. If they learnt from last week's defeat that you cannot win by playing only one quarter, then I feel, with the advantage of their own ground, the Parksiders can win this one. The result of Tuesday night's tribunal will have a strong bearing on this game. I still believe Fawkner is one of the top teams of the section. They will have learnt from last week's set back and should prove too strong for Monash Blues at Monash. Coburg, eager to prove themselves in "B" Section, visit Old Trinity. I believe the fast play-on style of the Coburg team will create enough opportunities for their forwards to score well and win this one. Collegians, after a great win last week, have the bye. C SECTIO N Only 2 out of 5 to start the season - so let's see if we can do better today. Alphington and Hampton Rovers, both first round winners, will stage the match of the day - one of the few days in the year when veteran stalwarts Syd Whitfield and Fred Coldrey won't see eye-to-eye. Hampton jumped Geelong early last week and proved that a good first quarter is essential. Hampton have a sprinkling of height and active small players. Alphington will be typically determined and have the home ground advantage. I am in a spot - selecting between first round winners, neither for which I cared last week. Peter Harris won't forgive me - I'll take Hampton. All those pre-season stories of new-found success don't count for much, A.J.A.X.I You will have your busy moments at home today. Old Ivanhoe started strongly, but may find A.J.A.X. a more difficult proposition than re-. I lean towards Ivanhoe, building Old Carey but expect a close game. Geelong and St. Kilda played each other twice for a win apiece in Geelong is missing Wells around the packs, but is steadily establishing its now line-up that contains many new faces. "Ox" White will dominate C Section packs while Geelong has the raw Ellistone whom I predict will come good. I pick Geelong because it's at Queen's Park. "Olds" Brighton and "Xavs" clash at Yarra Park. Brighton scored well last week and I think `»V& Wv7 (cont ) they will have the poise to notch win number two today. That selection was a "guess" but this one is a complete "stab in the dark". Neighbours Old Carey and Kew meet at Bufieen. Both began their season's poorly - today a loss ior either could be demoralizing. i fancy Old Carey at home - Kew won't adjust quickly enough to the wide spaces of the big Carey ground. Selections : Geelong, Old Ivanhoe, Old Carey, Old Brighton, Hampton Rovers - JI M FIDGE. D SECTIO N Near neighbours Country Colleges and University High School meet in Royal Park. Forwards win matches and on last Saturday's form the U.H.S.O.B. were the better combination. Country Colleges may lack that vital yard in pace to enable them to compete with their urban opponents. University High is my selection despite my allegiances. Heatherton, stung by last Saturday's reversal of form, journey into the East to meet 'Big' Peter Hutchinson and his 18 wise men from Camberwell Grammar. Old Camberwell have talented big men who are so necessary in a good side. Providing they heed the Instructions of their sagacious coach Old Camberwell players should win the points. West Brunswick, on the restricted confines of the Ransford Oval, should prove too talented for Elsternwick whose opening form is an unknown quantity to all who didn't see their game. The "Magpies" are really a rejuvenated club and they should continue on their winning way today. Near neighbours St. Kevin's Old Boys and Melbourne High School Old Boys roost for the first time in many seasons. St. Kevin's, judging on"1977 form (which may well prove unreiiable), should prove too talented for Melbourne High School whose opening form left a lot to be desired. Two of the strong sides, Power House and State Bank, clash in the Match of the Round at the Ross Gregory Oval. Power House have already impressed some keen judges as potential premiers. Their well-known leader, Michael Perry, has brought a leavening of experience to the promising side of Sate Bank had a good win last week and with evergreen Peter Wynd starring, impressed with their overall srength. Home ground advantage prompts me to select Power House as the likely winner. In a decade of watching State Bank performances their home form has always been better than their away form. A special plea to the five home clubs - please be prompt in phoning your scores to the Herald. A repeat of last week's' fiasco will cause hundreds of people to lose faith in D Section clubs' integrity. Selections : University High School Old Boys, Old Camberwell Grammarians, West Brunswick, St. Kevin's Old Boys, Power House - NORM NUGENT. E SECTIO N After receiving my appointment late at night, having some refreshment to celebrate, I was asked to put my tips in an envelope for first mail the next day and I finished up with three out of five. Knowing the habits of amateur football teams not playing to form it might be just as well if I do mostly guess-work and leave out the theory. Bulieen-Tempiestowe will be too strong for Brunswick, who do not appear to have started regaining their strength of a few years back. Old Geelong are a new, revitalised side and have started the season with determination for a higher grade in They also have the advantage of the home ground. St. Bede's made a very good showing in a practice match I saw and Old Geelong will have to watch St. Bede's smaller players or they will be In trouble. A.M.P. - No rth Brunswick : Both winners last week and I think this will be a good tussle. Home ground, if the usual wind arrives, could be the influence. La Trobe Blacks : As others have stated, University teams are slow starters, and A.N.Z. Bank will be too strong for them. I haven't seen Beverley Hills in action but have seen Old Mentonlans so with the home ground advantage and the determination of Old Mentonians it is my guess that they will be too strong. Selections : Bulleen-Templestowe, Old Geelong, A.M.P., A.N.Z. Bank, Old Mentonlans -- NUGGET STEPHENS. F SECTIO N We will start with a hard one, Bulleen United v F.I.T. Both ran into good sides last week and I fancy that the Footscray side may be able to get off the mark at Bulleen's expense. The next problem is whether the Commonwealth Bankers have improved on last year and whether Monash Whites have recovered from the shock administered by Clayton. I fancy that the "Bankers" will finish In front of the locals. National Bank had a good win last Saturday over Uni. Reds, but this week they front up to a really good team, one which will test them to the utmost. Very likely even a bit beyond that point, if what I hear is correct. Clayton to win unless they go looking for golf balls. Uni. Reds are to entertain Thornbury at Royal Park. Thornbury opened with a solid win against Bulleen United, while the Reds went down to National Bank. If Thornbury do not win this game - and win it well - they will have lost an old friend. Therry C.C. should use this opportunity to get to know each other. A good collection of players is only half the game of football but a good team should be their aim. NUGENT Norm's career in the V.A.F.A. spans 19 years and three clubs it began in 1960 when Norm was a member of Power House. In 1961 he played 3 B grade games with that club - (not many Reserve XVIII sides were fielded in those days) : ' saw Norm playing at home for Broadford in the now defunct Waranga - North East Football League. Norm's longest, and most import ant, stint began in 196 when he was elected inaugural Secretary of new V.A.F.A. Club Assumption Old Collegians. He played 128 games with this club. These games encompassed F ; E Reserve; D and D Reserve ; C Reserve and B Reserve, and included 9 goals. Norm was Club Secretary for 13 years. In 1977, Norm moved across to Old Paradians - s till continuing as a V.A.F.A. Club Secretary. He has played 12 B R~- serve games with Old Paradians and kicked 1 goal. A total of 13 V.A.F.A. games and 50 goals. Norm has officiated as V.A.F.A. Duty Officer at finals games at Royal Park and Collingwood since (He missed 1972 because Assumption were playing in C Sec tion Grand Final) Norm has been involved in all Sections except A began Norm's tipping career - with Junior Sec ti on -2, last year Norm handled F Section. Tlils year, Norm is also a member of the V.A.F.A. Umpire Committee. Norm is now the longest serving ( and therefore, by some definitions, the worst) current Secretary in the V.A.F.A. - entering his 15th se ason this year. PETER BRUKNER Current A Section tipster Peter Brukner has been involved with University Blues since 1971, both on the administrative side and as a player. His first role was that of under 19's manager, from there to committeeman and in 197 he was appointed Chairman. Peter has held this appointment for years ( and 1978). He is also V.A.F.A. Delegate for the Club this year. Peter started his playing career in 1973 "when the Reserves were short", and after a few games graduated to the Senior XVIII. In total, he has played about 90 games for the Blues - mainly in the Reserves saw Peter captaining the Reserve Side. Peter's target (as Chairman of the Blues) this year is for the club to win its first A Section premiership since "Eighteen years is too long to wait - for any club". Peter also admits that this aim may allow some bias to creep into his previews. On a personal note - Peter graduated as a Doctor last year and is currently working at the Repatriation Hospital in Heidelberg. He is looking forward to an interesting year in A Section, with all the innovations and what looks like being an even competition. ATEUR FOOTBALLER - APRIL 22, 1978 Page 7

(North) and Moran, Pearce, Logan (Ormond). Caulfield Grammarians put in a great second half after trailing Uni. Blues by 10 points at half time, kicking to 5.3. McNicol, Voyage McLaughlin, hlin,, Griffiths, and Mortett wereht best for McLaughlin 100 games to Barry Lyons ( De La Salle) and Don Munro (A.M.P.). Old Paradians reported on farewell dinner given by club to John Booth, player 1957 to 196 and coach 1966 to Top scorer for day was State Savings Bank who kicked in a 10 point defeat of Old Geelong. Stars for S.S.B. were Morrison, Evans, Webster, McGill, Spithili and Brennan. TEN YEARS AGO 'A' Section coaches were Bob Spuriing (North Old Boys), John Wilson (Caulfield Grammar), John Booth (Old Paradians), Geoff Hibbins (Collegians), Alan Salter (Coburg), Peter Kanis ( M.H.S. Old Boys), Frank Snell (Kew), Don Howell (Old Scotch), Brian Gleason ( Uni. Blacks), Les Hughson (Unl. Blues). Lex Hibbins (Collegians) retired after playing 222 games. Old Carey congratulated John Elliott and Bruce Edwards on 150 games with the club. Kew, who outplayed Old Paradians all day to win by 5 goals, and Uni. Blacks were the only undefeated 'A' Section teams afer two games. TWENTY YEARS AGO Old Xavteriana reversed the 1957 'B' Section grand final with an 11 point win over Aiphington. Slattery, Capes, McPhail, John Sanders (5 goals) were Old X's stars with Miller, Shaw and P. Whitfield best for Aiphington. Trevor Cookson played his 100th game for E.S. & A. Bank. Junior Athol Guy made a sensational debut with M.H.S.O.B. seniors kicking 9 of the club's 17 goals in their 31 point defeat of Kew. New team St. Kiida C.B.C.O.B. received good wish telegrams for their first match from Laurie and Kevin Mithen, Peter Breachiey, Don Williams, Terry Mountain, Frank Dunin, Brian Walsh, Brian Molony, Geoff Foshan and Allan Kiiligrew (past pupils prominent in League ranks). Coach was Joe Sheehan, captain of Ormond's 1950 'A' Section premiership team. Popular U.H.S.O.B. captain Jack Kalaf, in his last game before going overseas, starred with five goals in the club's big win over South Melbourne City. 'A' Section umpires were Watt, Luckman, Lance, Halliday and H. Roberts. THIRTY YEARS AGO 'A' Section umpires were Creighton, Gamble, Walsh, Jennings and Wilkins. Current A.B.C. football commentator Doug Heywood kicked 8 goals from half-forward flank for University Blacks against Hampton Rovers. Another prominent figure mentioned - John Kennedy's vigorous rucking brought Teachers' College many opportunities. Page 1 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - APRIL 22, 1978 A MOMENTOUS Wednesday 12th April '78 marked an important night in Victorian Amateur football history. This night saw t he rormal farewell by the Association to Mr. and Mrs. Jack Fullerton - aftcr their twenty-seven years connection with the- V.A.F.A. The Fullerton Testimonial was comhincd %vith the tradition President's - ~.ecrc!:uy's pre" season dinner - which this year saw the Club Delegates also bein 7 invited ( a practice which will be continued in the future). The opportunity was also taken, on ti,i, ni«ht, to make a presentation to r. and Mrs. Lou Zacbariah in recognition of the service that they have eiven to the Association during the past thirty-odd years. The evening was organized by the V.1.F.A. Social Committee (under ('hair a:an Brian Lauder) at "Chaucer's" Receptions in Canterbury. Proceedings were opened by 11Richael Arnold before he introduced guest compere Peter Landy (from Channel 7). The apologies themselves made a formidable list of "who's-who" in sporting circles today, and a special welcome was extended to representatives of both Tasmanian and South Australian football bodies - as well as those from the V.F.L. The presentation to the Zachariah's <<, as made (in absentia) by Mr. M anson Russel, V.A.F.A. President and that to the Fullerton's by Mr. Fred Coldrey Vice President and Life Member of the A ssociation. In response to Mr. Coldrey, Jack Fullerton, visibly touched by the gratituclc, extended to himself and his wife Norrna, stated that his guiding theme throughout life - both in and out, of football - een: == TO TRYi In all things that he undertook Jack had striven to "do his best" and if his best was not good enough then "I'm sorry! OCCASION I can only try." (A worthy philosophy for all to emulate. ) At the conclusion of his remarks, Jack and Norma were treated to a standing ovation. The level of after-dinner conversation, and the considerable mixing that was evident seem to indicate that the rationale for the dinner - that various Presidents, Secretarys and Members meet together so that co-operation during the Season can be conducted on a personal level - was achieved successfully. The attendance of many of the V.A.F.A. Umpires will further this air of co-operation during the Season. The single sour-note of the evening was that caused by the President's announcement that the Reservoir Old Boys Club had just disbanded. In closing the night's proceedings, 'Secretary Alf Kearn acknowledged the assistance that he had received from the Fullertons - and admitted that he had accepted all their advice and acted on about 95% thereof. Generally, a most successful, and enjoyable night! congratulations must go to the V.A.F.A. Social Committee for the work they put in to achieve their various aims, on that memorable evening. FIRST 100 FOR TH WHITE S Ross McKenzie today becomes the first to play 100 games with Monash Whites. Ross joined in 1971, the club's first season and has played almost all games as first ruck. Ross was a member of the 1972 Reserves Premiership side and was runner-up Best and Fairest. In 197, Ross won the Reserves Best and Fairest having played only 6 reserves games l Ross's best year was 1975 when he became captain of the senior side after the playing coach retired in the fifth round. Ross went on to lead the side to the Whites only senior premiership. Off the field Ross has held positions of press secretary and general treasurer from 1972 to After missing last season whilst in the U.S.A. on a company transfer we welcome Ross back and wish him good luck for his next 100. LL D Li, i~ia 3 CAULFIELD LEADERS After the final training session last week Caulfield Grammarians seniors players selected Jon Long to be their captain for the 1978 season, Warwick Watson as vice-captain and Mike isson as deputy vice-captain. Jon has played over 150 games with the club commencing with the juniors several years ago, winning their Best and Fairest trophy before being promoted to the seniors. A determined player, a good ball getter and a dedicated club man, he sets a splendid example for other team members to emulate. His father, Dennis, the well-known sports critic an d raconteur, is occasionally seen around the clubrooms. Warwick, second in command has p layed many great games mainly as a hall back flanker during the past few years but has often been plagued with injuries and has missed many.games. However this could be his year. Mike, a utility type and one of the younger brigade is a hard worker on the field and should prove to be an excellent stand-in when required.
