2 Unbeaten run gives Cabramatta trio the Invitational first prize A TEAM of Australian-ranked players from the powerful Cabramatta club went through seven games without defeat to take home the winner s $3000 purse from Double Bay Women s Club s 7 th Invitation Triples $9000 prize pool over the weekend August The trio, skipped by NSW representative, Arleen Jeffery, who is ranked 41 in the Australian Women s Singles list, Norfolk Island international, Carmen Anderson, (Australian ranked 18 th ) and NSW player. Lisa Prideaux (listed at 35 th ) finished the two-day tournament with six wins and one drawn result to take the honours with 13 points and a margin of 44 shots. Two of the team from the Merrylands Club, which finished second, are also State representatives and listed in Australia s top 200. Jan Rolph (ranked 176 th ) skipped for Betty Herberston (123 rd ) and Cheryl Gillard to win six matches for 12 points and 40 shot margin. Third place was taken by a composite team of Trish Orgill, Leane Smith and Debra Walder with 12 wins plus 37 shots. Disappointed for organisers was the last minute withdraw of headliners, Karen Murphy and Kelsey Cottrell, who were committed to join the Australian squad which is preparing for this week s test series against South Africa at the Moonta Memorial Park Bowling Club, South Australia, Cabramatta s young lead player, Lisa Mitchell, came in as substitute for Murphy, with No 2 Australian ranked Scottish international, Kay Moran, as second and Australian international, Clair Duke, taking on the skipping responsibility. The team won four and drew one of its 7 matches for nine points and a + 40 shot margin. One of its two defeats was at the hands of Double Bay s team of Lorraine Becker, Iris Kampel and Leila Levy, the former Double Bay BC member, now living in Melbourne. This combination kept pace with the Australian-rated team and with the score at 5-all, forged ahead to gain a winning break to finish In seven games the Double Bay side collected seven points and a minus two shot difference. Lisa Mitchell, Kay Moran, Lorraine Becker, Iris Kampel, Claire Duke and Leila Levy after their match in the 7 th Invitational Triples. Another Double Bay entry of Lorraine McLaughlin and Gail Black with Castlehill s Denise Culverwell, had a three wins plus 4 shots result. Not only did she share the $3000 first prize with her two Cabramatta team mates for winning Double Bay Women s Club s 7 th Invitational triples from a field of 41 other teams, she had the winning entry in the guessing competition conducted as part of the tournament s off-green activities. Her prize was a set of lawn bowls, valued at $675, donated by Jackies Bowls, of Burwood. It is the first time, I ve won anything in a raffle, a happy Carmen said in her thank you to Double Bay organisers and the various sponsors of the event. And she quipped: Now I can roll-up with eight bowls! Next year new clubhouse? DOUBLE BAY Bowling Club chairman, John Rosen, speaking during the presentation ceremony of the Women s Club s 7 th Invitational Triples tournament, said he hoped that the 2012 event will be even more successful than this year. Hopefully we will have a new, bigger and brighter clubhouse as part of our planned renovation project, he said. And he gave a tongue-in-cheek promise that there will be no synthetic green. Double Bay Men s Club provided the backroom staff and match officials for the Invitation event. In all 126 players competed in the event for a total of $9000 prize money.

4 GREENS FILLED FOR TRIPLES EVENT Double Bay s three greens accommodated 21 rinks for the Women s Club s 7 th Invitational Triples on Saturday and Sunday, August Competitors praised the condition of the playing surfaces which allowed for all varieties of shots to be played. In all 126 players competed in the event for a total of $9000 prize money. PRESIDENT PRAISES EVENT PRESIDENT of the NSW Women s Bowling Association, Jewel Buchanan (left), congratulated Double Bay Women s Club on the ever-growing success of the annual Invitation Triples tournament. Speaking during the presentation ceremony of the 7 th event, she said that she missed last year s tournament, which was cancelled when the club had clubhouse renovation plans. The majority of competitors told Double Bay organisers that New South Wales women bowlers consider the event as the top tournament of the year. It is now a privilege to receive the invitation to compete, one player told Bay Watch. My team already has their fingers crossed that we are asked to come back next year, she added. 5 Kampel looks to defence in bid to turn tables in 2011 Triples final FOR the second time in the past four years the final of the Major Triples Championship will be decided between teams skipped by two of the club s most prolific title holders. This follows the Jack Kampel team s semi-final victory over the 2011 tournament s giant-killing combination of Alan Simmons, Sam Abrahams and Clive Wolff and set up the title match against Gerald Weinberg s unit of Arnold Javen and Pepe Glick. The last time Kampel and Weinberg clashed in a Double Bay Major Triples championship round was in 2007 when Weinberg, with Les Ferguson and Peter Levy, took the crown from Kampel, Bernard Fridman and Alan Treisman by one shot It was a final Kampel hasn t forgotten. He was up playing the last end, but somehow Weinberg snatched the title with an explosive four shot count. Last week, Kampel alongside Bernard Fridman FLASH BACK TO 2007 The 2007 Major Triples finalists Alan Treisman, Jack Kampel and Bernard Fridman Les Ferguson, Peter Levy and Gerald Weinberg - the trio which scored four shots on the last end to take the title. and Doug King, made sure his team played a defensive game against an opposition which had swept aside players of a higher grade on its way to the 2011 semi-final. If you are going to lose an end keep it to singles and avoid multiples, was his philosophy and it was illustrated to good affect. By the time the 23 rd end was to be played Kampel was ahead which meant that Wolff had to score two maximum counts to keep the match alive. From the score card it looked as if was easy win - or was it? After nine ends Kampel was leading 17-3 and a landslide victory was in the offering. Then his team lost the next six ends, (17-10) before scoring on the following two (21-10) and lost another four ends in a row (21-14) before claiming the last three ends with counts of two, three and three. Both teams won 12 ends, but the big difference was that of the ends the Kampel unit lost 10 were single counts and the other two were two shots. On the other side of the score card, the Wolff team gave up one end of four shots and three shots on each of five ends. The moral of the match - if you are going to lose an end keep it to singles shots and avoid multiple counts. This is something that Jack Kampel will impress on his team mates when they are on the green for the upcoming final against Gerald Weinberg on Saturday afternoon.
