DOUBLE BAY WATCH INCORPORATING A REGULAR NEWSLETTER OF THE DOUBLE BAY MEN S BOWLING CLUB Vol. 6 No. 2 February - March, 2009 EDITOR: MIKE GOLLAND WOMEN S BOWLING CLUB S ON THE GREEN Pages 8 & 9 SIX IN THE GREEN & GOLD SIX Double Bay Bowling Club members will wear the green and gold of Australia at the 18 th Maccabiah Games in Israel later this year. Australia will be represented by a squad of 10 men and five women in lawn bowls against formidable opposition from Israel, South Africa, England, Canada and the USA. The Australian lawn bowls contingent will be headed by Double Bay s Fred Ginsberg (pictured) as team manager. Five of the 10 named in the men s team are Sydneybased players, three are from Victoria and one each from South Australia and Western Australia, while there are four Victorians in the women s team. Players face a torrid continuous 10-day playing schedule starting on Sunday, July 12, the day before the Opening Ceremony in Tel Aviv. 2 Plenty of bowling ahead in 2009 DOUBLE Bay members face a busy 12 months, particularly if they compete in all the Men s Club s championship events. The Men s Club s 2009 Playing Calendar was released last week which revealed that every Saturday from January 31 to December 5 has a club, Zone or State fixture listed. And a number of Sundays are also set aside for finals of the club s Major Singles and Pairs, Handicap Singles and the Mixed Pairs. There are no events listed for the Easter weekend or Anzac Day, which this year is commemorated on a Saturday. Players who have made themselves available for the Zone 11 Pre-Season pennant competition (January 31 February 28) as well as the Saturday Pennant competition starting on March 7 and finishing with the finals and relegation matches on June 13 are asked by the Selection Committee, headed by Gerald Weinberg, to commit themselves to the club during these periods. Those who already know they will be unavailable during the Pre-Season and Pennant competition should notify the selectors well in advance. Double Bay Men s Bowling Club, sponsored again this year by Bradfield & Prichard, the local real estate company, has four teams in the current Zone 11 three-round pre-pennant competition, competing in Grades 1, 2, 3 and 5. PENNANT SEASON For the 2009 pennant competition Double Bay has retained last year s representation of five sides Chairman of selectors, Gerald Weinberg, told members during a recent Wednesday afternoon tea break that the club has applied for five teams to compete in the 2009 pennants. He said there is a possibility that the club s top team side will be returned to Grade 1 status, although it was relegated last season. This is because Coogee is unlikely to have the playing membership to compete in the top flight this season. He said that the bowls committee has nominated for pennant grades 1, 2, 3, 5 and 7, although the Zone may allocate a grade 6 side instead of grade 7. This means that almost every member, who indicated they are available for pennant selection, will play this year. It will be a tight situation with players unavailable for one reason or another, he said. Gerald appealed to the members who have already arranged holidays during the pennant session to advise the selectors well in advance. At the same time he called for a great club and team spirit by all members, whether playing club championship events, social games or inter-club pennant matches. WOMEN S INVITATIONAL One weekend off for the majority of players is August when the Women s Club hosts its annual and very successful Sixth Invitation Triples Tournament. A club official told Bay Watch this week that the Men s Bowling Club management will enforce the rules of play or forfeit for all club events. Where members are planning holidays which clash with a club championship, they should not enter the event, or at the best arrange a substitute for the period they are unavailable. The calendar of events was issued early enough for every member to take a responsible look at the dates. Of course, there are some circumstances which cannot be avoided. This is always taken into account. Nonetheless, the committee will make every effort to adhere to the published program dates, the official said. The Registered Club and the Men s Bowling Club annual general meetings have been pencilled in for Sunday, October 18 CALENDAR OF CLUB EVENTS SEE NEXT PAGE 2

It is a tradition at the carnivals to kindle the Warren Zines Memorial Candle in his memory and in respect of all Australians who lost their lives following the collapse of the bridge at the opening ceremony of the15 th Maccabiah Games in Israel. This year, the memorial light was kindled by Double Bay s high-profile member, Alan Rosenberg, a member of the NSW team, who is the Royal NSW Bowling Association vicepresident as well as a vice-chairman of Double Bay Bowling Club. At the closing ceremony Victorian Maccabi s leading bowler, David Sebag, extinguished the flame, which will be reignited at the 9 th carnival in Sydney (at Double Bay) in December. The team returned from the Glen Eira-McKinnon Bowls Club with a six medal count, four of which (one gold, one silver, two bronze) were won by the men s contingent and two (gold and bronze) by the women s squad as Maccabi NSW Lawn Bowls Guild was represented by its largest travelling carnival team of 30 members. For the first time the carnival was restricted to Pairs and Fours events. The NSW men s Division B Fours team of Double Bay members Louis Platus, John Wineberg, Arnold Javen and Lindfield s Basil Melnick took out the gold from Victorian challengers. South Australia s veteran Maccabi and Maccabiah lawn bowls representative, Gary Benveniste, joined with Lindfield s top-notch player, Rod Silber, Double Bay s Jack Kampel and Gerald Weinberg to finish with the bronze medal behind gold medal winners Victoria and the silver medallist s team from West Australia in the Division A Fours competition. Silber and Kampel combined to take silver in the Division A Pairs event with Javen and Melnick holding on for the bronze award. HOW OUR WOMEN WENT IN MELBOURNE see page 9 4

John Davis, 46 years playing at Double Bay, remembers the club JOHN Davis, who passed away in January, 2008, at the age of 101 and five months, has bequeathed $5000 to Double Bay Bowling Club. A cheque for the amount was presented to club chairman, John Rosen, by club member, George Rotenstein, a longtime friend of John Davis, during the afternoon tea break on Wednesday, January 28. In presenting the cheque George said that John had kindly remembered the club and its members in his will. John Rosen said that the club membership had fond memories of John for many reasons, but perhaps most will never forget the way in which he provided lollies every time he played at the club. The club has yet to decide how the gift will be used to perpetuate the John Davis name, but it is certain it will involve both the men s and women s club members. As he became the club s oldest playing member, John would say he preferred to bowl on top of the turf not underneath it! ABOVE: The memorial card which accompanied the cheque from the John George Davis estate. It said he was a kind understanding and forgiving man He remembered you. RIGHT: Long time friend of John Davis, George Rotenstein (right) had the honour of presenting the John Davis bequest cheque to club chairman, John Rosen. John, who was a member for 46 years, was known as lolly at the bowling club as he always had a box of lollies on the rink telling players to help themselves to all varieties of sweets from jelly beans, snakes, chocolate bars and Smarties to liquorice allsorts and fruit pastels. The tombstone in memory of John Davis was consecrated at Rookwood Cemetery on February 1,

Eddie s sense of humour still intact! MEN S Bowling Club president, Eddie Fingret, is renowned for his quick wit and general sense of humour. Thankfully, Bay Watch can report that he s lost none of it, following his recent Ischaemic stroke (blocked artery) and the successful carotid artery operation to repair the problem. But, he does admit that he had a few worrying days prior to the operation, when he couldn t think of anything funny to brighten his or anyone s mood. To prove that Eddie s well on the way to a full recovery Bay Watch reports this phone conversation when he was asked if the operation has resulted in a visible scar. Yes, its quite long makes me perfect for a role in Channel 9 s Underbelly TV series! And then there s his thoughts he had while lying in St Vincents Hospital s Intensive Care Unit on Saturday, January 23. CLUB CHAMPIONS, 2008 MAJOR TRIPLES CORRECTION The listing of the Major Triples in the 2008 Men s Championship results published in the previous Bay Watch issue, was incorrect. The correct details are published below MAJOR TRIPLES: BRIAN GINSBERG JACK KAMPEL PEPE GLICK * David Carroll James Cook Phil Gordon Jnr * runner/s-up INSET: The arrow points to the scar along Eddie s carotid artery I was laying there while they were trying to stabilise my blood pressure and I thought to myself Hell, playing on a ditch rink is better that being in Intensive Care and then it progressed from there. Playing with a swinging lead, or putting down a wrong bias, even dropping an eight in pennants and getting rained off during a game when you re well in front, are all better than being in Intensive Care, Eddie said. And when Bay Watch told him that there would be a photomontage of his picture and the scar area he replied: The vascular and neuro surgeons have been playing with my head for 10 days, you might as well have a go as well. Eddie plans to be back in the hot seat at the club by mid-to-late February. All the latest club news and views now on the daily updated and enlarged DOUBLE BAY BOWLING CLUB WEBSITE 7

ON THE GREEN EDITOR: ALMA GOLDMAN James Wall Shield Double Bay s again! ONCE again two Double Bay teams brought the James Wall Shield Eastern Suburbs District Final to our club. This year several of our players, who featured in past finals, did not enter as they are unavailable for future playoffs and this resulted in the formation of some new and interesting combinations. After a thrilling semi final at Hillsdale Karen Levinson, Gail Black, Marie Thatcher and Carole Brickman had a convincing win over Jan Watson's Matraville team, while Sonia Davis, Jan Hutchins Rayna Rosenberg and Alma Goldman also had a good win over Marion Munzone's Matraville Club challenge by In the final at Double Bay on Friday, January 30, a gallery of spectators was treated to a very good game keenly fought between the teams of Sonia Davis, Jan Hutchins, Rayna Rosenberg and Alma Goldman against Karen Levinson, Barbara Shotland (substitute for Carole Brickman), Marie Thatcher and Gail Black. Karen Levinson performed very well as skip and displayed excellent skill with some very timely trails of the jack that kept her team in front, including five shots on the 12th end which gave her team a comfortable margin to go on to win 23 to 17. It was good to see Gail Black, Rayna Rosenberg and Alma Goldman competing at this level which should give them experience and confidence for future competitions. The Levinson team will contest the Zone playoffs on June The 2008 James Wall champion team from Double Bay was Mary Newin, Florrie Cohen, Barbara Shotland and Pam Stein. -- IRIS KAMPEL Vivian Wood and Rayna Rosenberg Another rookie award for club s most improved THE club s co-winner of the inaugural Most Improved Player of the Year, Rayna Rosenberg, added another rookie trophy following her performances during the recent 8 th Maccabi Australia Lawn Bowls Carnival in Melbourne. Rayna was named co-recipient of the Rising Star Award, sponsored by David and Jan Steinberg in memory of Reuben Steinberg, a prominent West Australian lawn bowler and club administrator during late 1960s to mid-1980s, who represented Australia at three Maccabiah Games. The award was shared by Rayna, who was a member of the NSW women s Fours gold medal-winning team and Perth s talented newcomer, Vivian Wood. In the 2008 Women s Club presentations Rayna and Gail Black were honoured as cowinners of the Most Improved Player of the Year 8

ON THE GREEN WHO IS SHE? Who is the intruder pictured with the five Double Bay Women s Club members who represented Maccabi Australia at the recent 8 th Lawn Bowls Carnival in Melbourne? It is none other than Leila Levy, the former Rose Bay and Double Bay member, who now lives in Melbourne and was a member of the Victorian Women s squad. Five share Fours gold medal at Melbourne Maccabi carnival FIVE members of Double Bay Women s Bowling Club, Iris Kampel, Barbara Shotland, Rayna Rosenberg, Audrey Weinberg and Carole Brickman (pictured above) represented NSW Maccabi at the recent 8 th Maccabi Australia Lawn Bowls Carnival in Melbourne from December 26 to January 2 staged at the Glen Eira-McKinnon Bowls Club. A sixth member of the team, which competed in a Fours and a Pairs tournament, was Dafna Orbach, of the North Sydney Women s Bowling Club. In winning the Gold medal for the Fours event, NSW was skipped by Barbara Shotland with Iris Kampel taking the third s spot, while Audrey Weinberg, Carole Brickman and Dafna Orbach shared lead and the second s responsibilities. The duo of Iris Kampel and Barbara Shotland did well to take the women s bronze pairs medal from two strong Victorian combinations. 9

Games bowls team gets approval FOR the first time since lawn bowls was introduced into the Maccabiah Games in 1961, the Australian team has been officially recognised by Bowls Australia. The Maccabiah Games, staged in Israel every four years, is the Jewish equivalent of the Olympic Games and is sanctioned by the International Olympic Committee. The Australian Sports Commission has also officially recognised the Australian Maccabiah team, expected to number 500 competitors and officials who can proudly wear the Green and Gold colours and the Coat of Arms on their uniforms and playing gear. Bernard Fridman Double Bay will have four men and one woman competing in the lawn bowls tournament, while Double Bay s Fred Ginsberg, who played in the Australian lawn bowls team at the 2005 Maccabiah (17 th ), is team manager. The men are Bernard Fridman, Brian Ginsberg, Louis Platus and Pepe Glick, who form part of a 10-men squad divided into two five-member teams. The lone Double Bay woman is Women s Club president, Barbara Shotland, who combines with four Victorian representatives. The surprise selection in the men s team is Bernard Fridman, who has spent the past 12 months in his native South Africa to complete a high academic university course. He was so keen to represent Australia that he told selectors he would return here to play for Maccabi NSW in the 8 th Maccabi Australia Lawn Bowls Carnival in Melbourne during the Xmas holiday period. However, selectors were impressed with his list of achievements on the bowling green and included him in the contingent. It will be Bernard s second Maccabiah, having represented South Africa at the 16 th Games of 2001 when he played second in the South African Fours side which won the gold medal. He has also represented South Africa in a competitive Maccabi Goodwill bowls tour to Israel in However, the Israeli National side won the Five Test series. In 1993 he was on the short list as a long distance runner (15km) to compete in the 14 th Maccabiah, but South Africa was excluded from competing by the International Athletic Association, due to the country s Apartheid policy. Bernard will be back in Sydney and playing at Double Bay in May, just two months before he joins the Australian team to Israel. CONTINUES NEXT PAGE 10

Our bowlers in Aussie team FROM PREVIOUS PAGE For Louis Platus, it will be his ninth Maccabiah as a player and/or a member of the team management, having made his Maccabiah debut in 1973 (9 th ) with a silver medal as a member of the Australian cricket team. Pepe Glick is also a multi-maccabiah lawn bowls representative. This will be his fourth consecutive Maccabiah in the Australian colours. Brian Ginsberg, the brother of bowls team manager, Fred, is making his second Maccabiah appearance, but his debut in lawn bowls, having represented South Africa at the 1993 (14 th ) Maccabiah Games in squash. It will also be Barbara Shotland s initial Maccabiah Games. While she is looking forward to playing at international level, she says that she can t really believe she s going to be part of 500 representatives from Australia I remember walking into the Sydney Olympic Stadium for the closing ceremony with the team I worked with during the 2000 Para Olympics and that gave me shivers. What will it be like at the Opening Ceremony in Israel ; just can t wait to get there, she said. AT the 17 th Maccabiah in 2005, Double Bay was represented by Sid Glick (manager), Laurie Kern, Pepe Glick, Fred Ginsberg and Les Lilian, who was the most successful player when he returned with a silver medal in the Fours competition. Lilian played with George Rosettenstein, Lionel Dresner (Lindfield) and Victorian David Sebag. LOUIS PLATUS BRIAN GINSBERG PEPE GLICK BARBARA SHOTLAND THE AUSTRALIAN TEAM MEN: DAVID SEBAG (VIC), MICHAEL ZUSMAN (WA), BERNARD FRIDMAN (NSW), ROD SILBER (NSW), GARY BENVENISTE (SA); BRIAN GINSBERG (NSW), RON JACKSON (VIC), NEVILLE KARRO (VIC), LOUIS PLATUS (NSW), PEPE GLICK (NSW). WOMEN: GABY COHEN (VIC), MAUREEN COHEN (VIC), DI GROSBERG (VIC), MARCELLE KARRO (VIC), BARBARA SHOTLAND (NSW). 11

YOU VE got to hand (or should that be shoulder) it to David Carroll (pictured right), who has soldiered on despite having his left arm in a sling following an operation to repair a rotator cuff problem. David is so keen about his lawn bowls that he spent hours-and-hours rolling up to learn the art of retaining his balance when delivering the bowl with one arm immobile. Must say that he has overcome the immobility with some success, but has decried the suggestions of his team mates that he should retain the current technique! DID you hear about the member who was asked by a friend from another club to partner him in a charity tournament? At first he said No! I already play three or four times a week. Then the friend said Come on, it's for the handicapped and blind, which prompted the reply, Crikey we could win it! SEEMS that almost every one has been on a holiday cruise these past months and this report is from one of them From the deck of the cruise ship I have just been on, I could just barely see a bearded man on a small island in the distance who was shouting and desperately waving his hands. "Who is that?" I asked a steward. "I have no idea he said. Every time we pass by the island, he goes nuts." TWO former Eastern Suburbs lawn bowlers, Double Bay s Dr Ted Jackson and Diamond Bay s Eddie Allen, were posthumously recognised in the 2009 Australia Day Honours list. Ted Jackson, who passed away in June last year, was made a Member in the General Division (AM) for service to the arts as a benefactor and supporter of the Museum of Contemporary Art and through programs that encourage young artists. His wife, Cynthia, was also awarded the AM for similar services to art. Eddie Allen was honoured in the list of Medal in the General Division (OAM) recipients for his work with Lions International. 12
