2 Jack Kampel continues amazing singles run to collect Australian Maccabi title DOUBLE Bay Bowling Club s, Jack Kampel, confirmed his status as one of the top club singles players when he won the Inaugural Australian Jewish [Maccabi] Combined (men and women) Lawn Bowls Singles Championship on December 24. PHOTO BY JOHN WINEBERG The four finalists in the Inaugural Australian Maccabi Singles tournament (from left) Martin Brumer (WA), Gary Benveniste (South Australia), Terry Silberer (Victoria) and Jack Kampel (NSW). The event, the first of its kind within the Australian Maccabi movement, was for men and women lawn bowlers to compete in qualifying rounds at State level to determine the State champions. The state champions came to Sydney for a round robin final at Double Bay Bowling Club on the eve of the Maccabi Australia International Games (MAIGS). Kampel s win chalked up an unbeaten run of 30 singles matches in the past two years including the NSW section final straight sets victory over North Sydney Bowling Club s 28-year-old, Jaman Lewis. 3 Interstate challenge no hurdle for Double Bay s singles star TO win the Inaugural Australian Maccabi Lawn Bowls Singles Championship and continue his twoyear successful singles record, Jack Kampel was faced with interstate champions, Gary Benveniste (SA), Martin Brumer (WA) and Terry Silberer who, as runner-up in the Victorian final replaced, the unavailable winner, Michael Yelland. Kampel went through five rounds to qualify for the Australian Maccabi finals and the three match championship round robin games to continue his remarkable unbroken singles results since He is Double Bay s 2010 Major Singles title-holder. He won the event in 2009 along with the Handicap Singles. Currently, he is in the quarter-finals of the unfinished 2010 Handicap Singles tournament. Kampel, a former South African squash champion, took up lawn bowls in Following injuries he received at the 1997 Maccabiah Bridge disaster in Israel, when he represented Australia in Squash, he gave up squash to concentrate on lawn bowls. In all, Kampel has now won 10 Major or District Singles tournaments. To take the Australian Maccabi event Kampel defeated Silberer two-sets to nil, then was forced into a three-end tie-break to take full points from Benveniste. He then needed a win over Brumer to head the round robin tally with six points. Kampel had to produce some of his best bowling against Brumer. Going into the last end of the first set Kampel was one behind on the scoreboard, but was holding two shots with each having a bowl to play. Brumer drew shot with his last bowl, while Kampel missed his attempted drive to lose the set by two shots. This meant that if Kampel lost the second set Gary Benveniste could win the title with two wins and a better shot difference. However, Kampel took the second set by two shots. He applied pressure to grab the title by taking the first two ends of the tie-break. PRIZE MONEY The Australia-wide tournament was devised and organised by NSW Maccabi Lawn Bowls Guild headed by its president, Harry Stein. A $1400 prize purse was sponsored by the Bowls Guild, with the Australian champion taking $600, runner-up $350 (Gary Benveniste), third placed $250 (Martin Brumer) and fourth (Terry Silberer) $200. RESULTS Round 1: Gary Benveniste (SA) d Martin Brumer (WA) 2-0 (12-6, 11-3), Jack Kampel (NSW) d Terry Silberer (Vic) 2-0 (11-2, 11-4); Round 2: J Kampel d G Benveniste 2-1 (8-7, 6-7, 2-1), M. Harry Stein (right) presents the winner s cheque to Jack Kampel. JACK Kampel s list of lawn bowls club Major Singles wins started at (now defunct) Rose Bay Bowling Club in 1993, continued in 1994 and 1995, then in 1997 and His Double Bay Bowling Club Major Singles championships have been in 2009 and He has twice won the District s Major Singles (1997 and 2003) and was named District Player of the Year in 2003 Brumer d T Silberer 1-1½ (9-4, 6-6);.Round 3: G Benveniste d T Silberer 2-0 (8-6, 9-7), J Kampel d M Brumer 2-1 (7-9, 7-5, 2-0). 4 Small turn out in Turn-of-the-Year DOUBLE Bay s customary large participation in the 2010 Zone 11 Turnof-the Year tournament was limited by players commitment to compete in the Maccabi Australia International Games (MAIGS) hosted by the club. Brothers Ray and Harold Jankelowitz headed the club s entry into the prestigious Turn-of-the-Year, with Ray taking a section win in the singles and teaming with Harold to advance to the quarter-final in the pairs. Double Bay s other pairs entry was Sam Abrahams and Ken Shapiro. Ray Jankelowitz, after three wins to take Section 6 singles honour, came up against Joe Twiss, from the Cronulla RSL Club, in the quarter-final where he led for most of the match, but couldn t take advantage and exited Harold (left) and Ray Jankelowitz In the pairs, the brothers won the Section 8 round robin at Eastlakes taking out two composite teams and one from Hunters Hill. In the Post Sectional competition at South Coogee, they scored a first round win over the top pair from Section 1, but exited the tournament at the quarterfinal stage when they succumbed to the eventual winners headed by Peter McDonald, from Kensington. Wednesday teams embargo on substituting visitors VISITING bowlers will no longer be able to substitute for teams in Double Bay s popular Wednesday Triples competition when club members are available to play, club president, Eddie Fingret, told the membership last week. Fingret said that with 28 teams competing in the competition there will be a bye in each of the two divisions and substitutes for unavailable players will be allocated by the bowls committee from the list of members from teams which have the byes. In previous Wednesday competitions many skips invited players from local clubs to substitute for team members unavailable for one or more weeks. The embargo does not prevent other club lawn bowlers from seeking a game at Double Bay on its two men s bowling days (Monday and Wednesday). We will arrange a social game for a visitor who will be teamed with players from the bye teams and other Double Bay players not involved in competition matches that day, Fingret said. 5 Club players spearhead test win against Israel DOUBLE BAY Bowling Club provided all, but a handful of players, who represented Australia and dominated the 2 nd Maccabi Australia International Games (MAIGS) Lawn Bowls tournament against Israel in Sydney from December 26, 2010 to January Australia proved too solid in both the men s and women s sections at the Double Bay Club taking out every gold medal in the event. The Double Bay men s contingent was Harry Black, Bernard Fridman, Arnold Javen, Phillip Joel, Jack Kampel, Doug King, Les Lilian, Gerald Reichman, David Steinberg, Gerald Weinberg, John Wineberg, with Paul Brandon (team manager). In the women s team Double Bay players were Iris Kampel, Karen Levinson, Rayna Rosenberg, Barbara Shotland, Janet Steinberg and Audrey Weinberg. Veteran West Australian bowler, Mike Zusman, won the men s singles gold medal, and teamed with Manly s Jeff Shaw to take the pairs event, while Bernard Fridman and Jack Kampel combined with Lindfield s Rod Silber in the triples as the fours gold was won by Silber, Shaw, Fridman and Kampel. Gary Benveniste, from South Australia, was with Black and Joel, to take the triples silver medal. Israel s lone medal of the tournament was a bronze in the men s fours, where the gold went to the all-double Bay team of Black, Javen, Joel and Gerald Weinberg. Double Bay also fielded three players, Harry Stein, David Carroll and Clive Wolff in an International combination alongside Lennie Cartoon (Israel) and Stuart Lustigman (Great Britain). The women s event was highlighted by Australia s singles gold medal by former Israeli, Dafna Orbach (North Sydney), who recently skipped the team which was runner-up in the NSW Open Triples Championship at Wagga. Former Double Bay member, Leila Levy, who now plays in Melbourne, teamed with Barbara Shotland to take gold in the pairs, as well as with Iris Kampel and Shotland to capture gold in the triples. Orbach skipped the gold medal fours team of Rosenberg, Steinberg and Levinson. 7 PRE-PENNANT RESULTS DOUBLE BAY recorded three wins from five games in the first round of the 2011 Pre- Pennant Competition organised by Zone 11 on Saturday, January 15. Showers during the week and on the morning of the round contributed to slower than usual greens, which made for several close games. At Alexandria Erskineville the Grade 1 side meet tough opposition in a shot (1-5) loss, while the Grade 2 side scraped home at Matraville with a one-shot margin (55-54), for a 5-1 win. It was a reverse result in Grade 4 on home soil against Diamond Bay when the aggregate margin favoured the visitors by the one shot (55-56) in a 1-5 defeat. The Grade 5 and Grade 6 teams had comprehensive wins. The Grade 5 unit scored a 33 (64-31) shot margin at Matraville for a 5½ - ½ win, while the Grade 6 team scored a complete result at home to Bronte by 23 (66-43) shots for a 6-0 point tally. PROGRESS SCORES IN CLUB 2010 CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS LES Brem and Danny Cohen have won their way into the 2010 Drawn Pairs final, following a 2-0 sets (13-12, 11-9) semi-final decision over Peter Solomon and Julian Engelman. They will face the winner of the other semifinal between Bernie Garden and his partner Harold Jankelowitz and the pairing of Ray Novis and Len Sandler. The Sandler-Novis team made the last four with a 2-0 (18-5, 16-10) win over Ken Shapiro and Elliott Kaplan. In the 2010 Handicap Singles Pepe Glick (-1) made the semi-final with a win over Harry Stein (+5), following a comeback from being down down after 21 ends.
