by Peter Dive, Zone 12 Publicity Officer Welcome to the October edition of In The Zone, a monthly Newsletter for Zone 12 - Sydney South West Lawn Bowls Association. It will feature achievements and results over the last month and upcoming events across the Zone. The Management Committee hopes you enjoy reading In The Zone. Razor travelled to Ballina BC as the favourite to capture his first Champions of Champions crown. Ray s first match was against a very experienced opponent, Lee Stinson (Orange Ex-Services - Zone 5). This match was a dog fight from the beginning with hardly a shot the difference between the two players throughout the first two-thirds of the match. Then Lee skipped out to a lead and Ray s quest for the historic double was in jeopardy. As Razor has done many times over his career he found the inner resolve and determination to fight to score 6 successive singles to claim victory Razor s next opponent was Scott Franklin (Lightning Ridge Zone 3) the current Over 60 s State Singles champion. Ray skipped out to an early lead, which extended through the middle stages of the match before Franklin fought back to close the gap over the closing stages, but Razor was victorious by The semi-final clash against David Holt (Merrylands Zone 10) was a tremendous match with both players showing their skills at the highest level. The game was an extremely close affair with each end changing on numerous occasions as each bowler was drawing or playing weighted shots to change the head into their favour. The turning point came when David Holt led David was down on the end and played a weighted shot but unfortunately sliced the jack and Razor collected 4 shots, the following end scored 3 shots and eventually scored a victory. With heavy rain anticipated in the afternoon, the final against Michael Cronin (East Cessnock Zone 6) commenced early. Over the early ends the game was extremely tight with Pearse leading 7-5. Razor then went into another gear as he scored 9-0 to skip out to a 16-5 lead. The margin stayed the same during through the middle stagers of the match before Razor powered home to record a victory. Razor commented on winning his 4 th title by saying To say that I am chuffed with both State and Champion of Champions Singles titles is an understatement. I was very lucky to get win my first-round match against Lee Stinson, a very tough opponent. Going forward I knew I had to play better and did this against Scott in the Round 16. David Holt and I have had some cracking matches over the years and this semi-final match was no different. When David hit the front at I was able to re-group and was fortunate with a bit of luck to pick up 4 and take out the match. The final against Mick was one of my better singles matches. I was able to nail the jack early or converted every time when I needed to and was absolutely thrilled to win Winning both events in the same year never crossed my mind but to be named with the legend Bob King is very satisfying and humbling. Winning these events are stepping stones to bigger goals at both Australian Championships. I am on my way to breaking my first National title and I am over the moon to put myself in the position I have to reach my goals. 1

FIRST STATE TITLE FOR BULLANTS PAIRS Cabramatta s Ben Morthorpe and Aaron Wilson have stormed to their first NSW State title by capturing the Champion of Club Champions Pairs title at Ballina BC. The Bullants duo went into the contest as the favourites especially as Morthorpe had recently won the NSW Greenkeepers Singles and Pairs on the same greens. Their Round 16 encounter was against Terrigal (Zone 15). After a tight struggle early on, the Bullants pair powered home to a victory. Onto their Quarter Final match against Windang (Zone 16) they again showed great form to comfortably book a semi-final place with a victory. The following day they were up against Mona Vale (Zone 9) and their hot form from the previous day continued with a dominating victory. On to the final and this was an extremely tight contest early on against Tuncurry Beach (Zone 11), before the Bullants pair scored a 4 on the 11 th end to lead 13-9 and continued to apply the pressure to lead 21-9 after 16 ends. From there the Bullants never let go of their grip on the game and came out winners Ben Morthorpe said on the victory What a tremendous feeling to win my first State title and to do this with Disco, his first NSW title, is fantastic. Personally, I couldn t be happier as this title completes my year which has been an extremely successful one. We both cannot wait to represent Cabramatta, Zone 12 and NSW at the Australian Championships. DISCO GOES BACK TO BACK IN NZ Cabramatta s Aaron Wilson has gone back to back in winning one of New Zealand s prestigious singles events, the Speights North East Valley Invitational Singles. The 32 strong field was split into 4 sections where Aaron came second in his section with a last round win. His quarter final opponent was fellow Australian repprsentative Scott Thulborn where he was victorious in a tight match by Disco then went into top gear in his next two matches to qualify for the final by defeating Mike Nagy 25-4 and Will Clements The final was a repeat from last year s final against Ryan Bester. Aaron got off to a good start with each player driving if the other player had drawn close. Bester tried to fight back but Disco s was deadly with his draw game which led to a victory. Aaron said on his back to back victory It s pretty special to be in the elite club to go back to back. It s a great honour to be on this clubhouse s wall. Ryan is renowned for being one of the best drivers in the world. You ve just got to be on your game and draw well. A few things went my way in the final but I m ecstatic with the win. 2

NZ Champions Jo Edwards & Shannon McIlroy Australian Champions Colleen Orr & Lee Schraner CITY EDGES OUT COUNTRY AT CABRAMATTA The annual City v Country 3 test series was recently held at Cabramatta Bowling Club. The series commenced with back to back tests on Saturday and the 3 rd test on Sunday. The First Test was a tight affair for the first half of the game, then the boys from the bush skipped away to record a (2 rinks to 1) victory with Aaron Teys rink showing the way for Country with a victory over Ben Twist. The Second Test commenced under threatening skies as severe thunderstorms started to build. A pep talk during the break by the leaders of the City side saw them jump out to a 15 shot lead before the heavens opened to flood the greens. With Cabramatta having an undercover green, play resumed, and the local knowledge came to the fore as City were dominating to record a (3 rinks to 0) victory with Ben Twist s rink regaining form to lead the way with a win. Under cloudy skies, the Third Test got underway on Sunday morning with the master board being all tied at the half way mark. Suddenly a few scores across the 3 rinks saw Country skipped out to a double-digit lead. With less than 10 ends to go in the contest, Country still were ahead by a double-digit margin before Carl Healey s rink scored several shots over the closing ends to record a rink win. With one end remaining and Country ahead by 3, Ben Twist s rink were able to score 4 with Twist drawing shot with the final bowl of the weekend and record City a (1 rink to 2) victory and retain the shield. In other matches, the Under 25 City side defeated Country by 2 tests to 1 and the Country Under 18 s kept the flag flying by recording 2 tests to 1 victory over City U18 s. 3

PADSTOW FANTASTIC PLASTIC As part of my role I am endeavouring to visit the clubs I do not play against in Pennants so I can learn more about their club and the hard-working members. My first visit was to Padstow Bowling Club, or as the locals call the club The Stow, on the invitation of club stalwart Mel Mal Lee for their annual October long weekend graded triples. tournament. Twenty players ventured from various clubs for the one-day event. The locals call their greens Fantastic Plastic, two plastic greens greeted the players. Padstow have magnificent club facilities and the players and officials were spoilt over the lunch break with a fantastic Chinese buffet. There was a lot of sadness and heavy hearts within the locals as one of the clubs hard working volunteers and long-time club stalwart, David Parker, had recently passed away. At the end of the day, the boys from Taren Point Ricky Malan, Daniel Scanlan and Stewart Prior were the winners. Padstow has two other tournaments, June long weekend graded triples and a 6 week, Thursday night triples tournament under the lights from the October long weekend. I look forward to further visits to other clubs to meet their club officials and learn more about each club in Zone 12. ZONE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING The Annual General Meeting for Zone 12 was held on Thursday 4 th October at Cabramatta Bowling Club with George Humphries (St Johns Park) being voted in as President. The only changes in the Management Committee were: Vice President - Peter Went (Revesby Workers) Mick Morthorpe Chairman of Selectors Peter Dive Selector John Clarke (Cabra Vale Diggers) & George Jamieson (Cabramatta) Match Committee The Zone Presentation Day will be held on Sunday 11 November at Cabramatta Bowling Club commencing at 11am. Invitations to players and officials have been sent out by the Zone Secretary. 4

COSTA CAPTURES ROOKIES DOUBLE Picnic Point s Sam Costa has captured the Rookie double by winning the singles and pairs with David Wylie at Kemps Creek BC. With 22 players entering the Rookie Singles, this event was extremely competitive. With welcomed rain falling during the week leading up to the event, players had to adjust to the slower greens. Costa only started this year and had never played more than 2 bowls with his only bowls experience being limited to Pennants. A minus 4 handicap golfer, bowls has come easy to Costa as he was victorious in the final over last year s finalist Jamie Thompson (Cabra Vale Diggers) by dominating the second half of the game to win 17-8.The Rookies Pairs was the following weekend again at Kemps Creek BC with rain again affecting the green speed. Sixteen teams entered the competition with a number of draws in the preliminary rounds indicating the closeness of the competition. At the end of sectional play, Ross Kendell & Darren Tuckett (Picnic Point), Wayne & Jamie Thompson (Cabra Vale Diggers), Steven Shaw & William Ryan (Revesby Workers) and Sam Costa & David Wylie in the semi s. After the semi-finals, it was Wayne & Jamie Thompson going to battle Sam Costa & David Wylie in the final. The final came down to the last bowl with the Picnic Point duo winning Sam and David will represent Zone 12 at the finals at Raymond Terrace in November. COUNTRIES BEST BATTLE IT OUT AT ST JOHNS PARK The biggest tournament within Zone 12 was recently held, the $25,000 Men s Platinum Pairs at St Johns Park. The event was pairs with a number of the leading payers within NSW and Queensland entering the event. After two days of sectional play, 16 teams remained with some of Australia s best still in the hunt. Dave Ferguson and Ryan Best, Ray Pearse, local favourites Josh Berry and Chris Herden and Carl Healey and Harley McDonald and Shane Leonard just to name a few. Overnight heavy rain which continued into the early morning drastically changed the conditions of the green. This favoured Raymond Terrace youngsters Conner Freeman and Hayden Bojkowski (Raymond Terrace) as they defeated David Ferguson and Ryan Bester by 15-6 over the 12 ends format. Lee Trethowan and Danny Morrison flew the flag for the Central Coast as they defeated the strong Warilla pairing of Harley McDonald and Shane Leonard by The Quarter Finals went to the favourites with the semi-final between Ray Pearse and Carl Healey against Ian Whybrow and Rob Chesher coming down to the last bowl as Chester was victorious by Local favourites in Josh Berry and Chris Herden won their semi-final against former Saints team mates Brent Norman and Shannon White by The final was a close affair until Chesher scored 5 to take the advantage. The 5 proved vital as Ian Whybrow and Rob Chesher were victorious 14-4 and took home the $6,000 first prize. 5
