By finishing second in both Sections 1 and 4, the Titans take on section winners Wellers Hill and Broadbeach on Saturday for semi-final berths. The clash with Wellers Hill will feature a top-class singles clash between Ballina Summerland Singles winner Kevin Higson and Springwood s 2014 state champion of champions Harold Whitman. Ironically, Wellers Hill were beaten 2-1 by the other Titans team in the last of the 10 rounds. But the Wasps, whose team includes the talented Litfin brothers, Cohen, Logan and Bryce, must be slightly favoured to progress to the semi-finals. Springwood s team also includes Ian Ross and Joe Bennett in pairs and Anthony Parker skipping the fours. Buoyed by their last round win, Springwood should prove tough opponents for Broadbeach who were beaten 2-1 by Manly in the last round.
The Titans will be represented by Kim Millard in singles, Ron Baxter and Brad Coulson in pairs, and John Morris skipping the fours. The Bulls, with a solid line-up including singles ace Robbie Allan and the proven pairs combination of Gary Thomas and Geoff Lanham, are entitled to favouritism. Jindalee and titleholders New Farm enter their quarter-final with contrasting formlines. The Jaguars finished full of running to clinch their section with a 2-1 away defeat of Southport, while the Lightning are blowing smoke after a draw and three losses to end the qualifying rounds. Singles star Geoff Jensen has been New Farm s mainstay and he will need support from the other rinks for the Lightning to regain winning form. Jensen will line up as favourite against Jindalee s Jason McNaught. The Jaguars will be without former Hong Kong representative Mel Stewart for Saturday s quarter-final and his spot at third in Scott Lapthorne s fours outfit will be filled by Troy Casey. Beenleigh, who downed South Toowoomba in round 10, to win Section 2, will be opposed to Southport in the other quarter-final. The Muddies boast a highly skilled exponent in Eric Farnsworth and former state player Brian Cornish skipping the fours. DIVISION 1 60 Plus Unbeaten Salisbury, last year s runners-up, must be favoured to win the $8000 title. In semi-finals on Sunday, the Magpies meet Chermside and Ferny Grove take on Broadbeach. Salisbury have been a model of consistency, headed by the vastly experienced Barry Ward in singles, fours skip Graham Ross and the likely pairs combination of Graham Lewis and Tony Johnson. Chermside are always tough nuts to crack and with Howard Whittaker and Ray Cowie combining in the pairs and Geoff Hankinson skipping the fours, the Cannons are sure to come out firing. Ferny Grove and Broadbeach will both field husbands and wives. fours skip Ernie Bond has wife Sue as his trusty third, while former state player Gail Waitai will play singles for the Bulls and husband Ma partners Geoff Watkins in the pairs. Seasoned campaigners Don Brumwell (singles) and Ian Kennedy (pairs) have been consistent winners for Ferny Grove and have their sights set firmly on the title.
DIVISION 3 Unbeaten titleholders Ipswich City enter the semi-finals as firm favourites to retain their crown and $5000 in prizemoney. The Miners took their winning sequence to 12 by beating Corinda 2-1 and Jindalee 3-0 in the weekend playoffs at Bramble Bay. They now face Helensvale in a semi-final on Sunday after the Hawks saw off Stafford 3-0 and Salisbury 2-1. The other semi-final will feature Souths Acacia Maggies against Brighton. Both Benowa teams bowed out in the first round of the playoffs to Swifts and Coolum Beach respectively. SAD BEES Souths Acacia, after wiping Helensvale 3-0, pipped Swifts 2-1 in a quarter-final. The Maggies sneaked home on an extra end (15-14) in the fours. Brighton beat Victoria Point 3-0 before eliminating Coolum 2-1. DIVISION 5 Gold Coast-Tweed District has provided the four semi-finalists shooting for first prize of $5000 with Helensvale represented by two two teams on opposite sides of the draw. The Hawks meet Mermaid Beach in one semi after downing Bribie Island 2-1 and Brighton 3-0. Mermaid eliminated Southport and Beaudesert, both by 2-1 scorelines. The win over Southport included an astonishing singles clash in which the score was tied on nine occasions before Mermaid s K. Ross-Johnson edged Dennis McDonald Helensvale s other team bypassed Scarborough 3-0 and Bramble Bay 2-1 to set up a clash with South Tweed who dealt with Sunnybank 3-0 and New Farm 2-1.
DIVISION 5 60 Plus Can McKenzie Park Ladies continue their fairytale run and pull off the $5000 title??? They face a tough semi-final encounter with Helensvale, while favourites Brighton meet Mermaid Beach in the other semi. For a small club Brighton has performed admirable to qualify Semifinalists in divisions 3 and 5/60 Plus, while they also reached the quarterfinals in Division 5. The Mighty Barracudas Spotlight on Clubs From Jack Attack to STAR of the BLK Sevens in 12 months. Jack Attack is the exciting new bowls format launched by Bowls Australia for non-bowlers. Southport is the home to one of the most successful Jack Attack programs in Australia, and also hosts many other social and barefoot bowls events. Southport Bowls Club has successfully run seven Jack Attack tournaments to date and a tournament number 8 is starting on April 6 - a twilight/night bowls game because most competitors work during the day. The prize money is $400 brings out the competitive spirit AND improves bowling skills.
Jack Attack is such an enjoyable format it attracts new people to the sport and increases the club membership as well as being very good for the restaurant and bar takings. If you watch APL at Pine Rivers last November on Fox Sports, this is where Jack Attack format came from. Several Jack Attackers have joined the club and become regular bowlers but a major success story is two mates, Marcus Yost and Troy Perdue who rose from their first touch of a bowl in February 2015 during Jack Attack to both playing Pennant for the club in the same season. Marcus has progressed to be one of the stars of a BLK Premier Sevens team, one of 3 teams entered by Southport. Troy plays whenever he can and has introduced his twin boys to Jack Attack, stars of the future at age 10. Some others who rose from Jack Attack to be regular players are Kerry Williams, Kyle Bennett, Bryan Forsyth, Sharon and Glenn Cogill. The benefit of new members is known to all, but Troy, Marcus and the other new members are especially valuable because they are a generation younger. A couple of the guys have new bowls made to order with their footie teams colours and logo. Photo inset, Marcus Yost proudly wearing his new club uniform the night before his first pennant match. Jack Attack nights are lots of fun for everyone, and friendships are forged. Some players prefer to remain in Jack Attack for now and play in every tournament. Southport Bowls Club Located within the heart of the Southport area and surrounded by high rises, Southport Bowls Club was established in 1914 and is the oldest bowls club on the Gold Coast. Celebrating its centenary in 2014, the club continues to be a fantastic venue at the heart of the main Gold Coast strip. The club boasts three fantastic greens and a large clubhouse, along with ample off-street parking facilities for visitors. Southport is the home to one of the most successful Jack Attack programs in Australia, and hosts many social and barefoot bowls events outside of Jack Attack.
Southport is no stranger to hosting large tournaments, playing host to the Pan Pacific Masters Games among others, and being a major club throughout the 2015 Australian Open. Upcoming events at Southport Bowls Club Australian Open 2016 from Saturday June 11 to Friday June 24 Southport Open Triples - 26 June Southport Welcome Pairs 27 June Southport Warm up Fours 28 and 29 June Southport Classic Pairs July Pan Pacific Master Games November 4 November 13 IPSWICH MINERS "Ipswich bowls club had much to cheer about in The Club was successful in winning the CDBA Division 2 ladies pennant and the men, the division 5 flag. Then to top it all off the Club took out the Premier 7's division 3 competition. Not bad for a Club with only a small membership. This hit rate has continued on this year with the Miners finding their way to the finals of both Division 3 and 5 of the Premier 7's competition. Unfortunately eliminated by an in-form Brighton team in the play offs in Div 5 but the Miners have a Semi Final appointment with Helensvale Hawks in this seasons Div 3. Irrespective of whether the club enjoys finals success this year the fact that they have got to the position they are is a major achievement for this group.
The Ipswich Club is the oldest Bowls Club in Ipswich and one of the oldest in the state. It is situated prominently in Queens Park and commands an outstanding outlook over the City. {Often refered to as Ipswich in the Park } It is a Club that exists through the voluntary work and efforts of members. It is a formula that they have found works. The Club has two good quality greens and games are played 4/5 days a week. This, together with the environment within the Club presents a compelling reason for bowlers to play and enjoy bowls here. Every effort is made to achieve a good balance between competitive and social bowls. Management believes that this is the glue that binds the membership together. Members enjoy representing this small club in competitions. The challenge to do well brings out their best. Photos by: - Peter Longland of Toowong Bowls Club.
