1 President s Message. Festival and Finals Time!!!! Another great month of soccer has been and gone, leaving us with great finals in both Junior and Senior divisions. With all the hard work that the teams and clubs have put in throughout the season, the results of our devoted coaches, staff and volunteers have paid off with a great competition throughout both finals divisions. Also in finals fever, is the Under 15 girls team from Harristown State High school Football Academy who had an exciting State win in the Bill Turner Cup before heading off to the Nationals. We congratulate the team on finishing 4 th in the National U15 girl s finals competition that was held in Newcastle in the early weeks of September. Many of you would have had the opportunity to see that the Festival of Football is up and running around the Junior & Senior Grand Finals weekend as well as the recent Carnival of Flowers march. The eye catching banner was on display all weekend with plenty of interest and enthusiasm from the community as festival committee members handed out flyers to the crowds outlining the program for next year. Keep an eye out for the Festival of Football newsletter that will come out regularly to keep you up to date with events and ways you can help in this exciting venture, so please check it out and lend us your expertise, enthusiasm and community spirit throughout the Festival. Now that the season is done and the raffle is over, a big thank you goes out to the community and their generosity throughout the season with selling and buying tickets in the Wippells car raffle. The lucky winner of the Mazda 121 was Amanda Jones who bought the ticket from the Laidley Soccer Club. Congratulations and best wishes with your new car and a great big thank you to the team at Wippell s for their generous donation. Also we congratulate Willowburn who recently celebrated their club s 60 th anniversary. Greg Stuckey President 1
2 Harristown Under 15 girls soccer squad in the National finals of the Bill Turner Cup. The Under 15 girls from Harristown State High school Football Academy have for the 2nd time in four years won the State Championship in the Bill Turner Schools Cup. The Harristown girls defeated their arch rivals Cavendish Road 2-1 in the State Finals, giving them a berth in the National finals that was held in Newcastle on September 7th. Cavendish Road were outright favorite after winning the State Trophy 6 times out of the last 8 years, so the teams talent and efforts throughout the competition is to be commended, given the reputed excellence of the competition they faced going into the State finals. In the National finals, the Harristown girls finished an incredible 4 th in Australia in their division after 3 very intense games. This is an absolutely fantastic result for the girls, their coaching staff and the elite soccer specialization program at Harristown State High school. Further information on the soccer program, please contact Harristown State High school. DREAM BELIEVE ACHIEVE C A R N I V A L OF F L O W E R S. As part of the Introduction of the FESTIVAL OF FOOTBALL to the general Toowoomba community, various soccer clubs were recently asked to participate in the Marching of the Carnival of Flowers. Our new festival banner was impressively on display and we had a strong sporting representation of local football clubs on the day. Given the short notice of our inclusion into the Carnival, a really big thank you goes out to all players, volunteers and other sporting members that supported our initiative on the day. It would not have been a success without you all. Also a big thank you to the Festival committee for getting us involved in the Carnival. FESTIVAL of FOOTBALL In 2010, Toowoomba will launch its first ever Festival of Football. The Festival is a celebration of Australia s qualification to the FIFA World Cup. This Festival recognises the huge impact that Football plays within our community and celebrates our continued growth as a sporting nation in the World Game. 4 JUNIOR DIVISION Football Toowoomba juniors and seniors wrapped up the season with grand finals on 12 and 13 September. Unfortunately, we couldn t get the Stadium this year for the finals so junior grand finals were hosted by Rockville and senior grand finals were hosted by West Wanderers. A big thank you to both clubs for the hard work put in to make both days a huge success. Results of the junior grand finals were Under 11A Garden City Rebels defeated Rockville Dragons 1-0 Under 11 B Pittsworth Vikings defeated Prep Hood 3-0 in a penalty shootout Under 12A West Wanderers Wolves defeated Rockville Dragons 2-0 Under 12B Gatton Redbacks defeated Pittsworth Vikings 4-3 Under 13A Rockville Razorbacks defeated Hawks Devils 4-2 Under 13B Pittsworth Vikings defeated Withcott Tigers 5-3 Under 14/15A Garden City Zulus defeated West Wanderers Wranglers 1-0 Under 14/15B Garden City Chieftans defeated Willowburn Magpies White 5-3 in penalty shootout Under 15 Girls Gatton Redbacks defeated Rockville Warriors 1-0 teams who competed in the Grand Finals. As you can see by the scores, all games were keenly contested. Results of the senior grand finals were Premier Men s - This year s Minor Premiers South Toowoomba Hawks defeated last year s Premier winners West Wanderers 2-0. West Wanderers played over half the game with only ten men when one of their player s was sent from the field in the first half. South Hawks had dominated the premier division in 2009 but were beaten in the semi-finals by West Wanderers. Having to play with only ten men against a full strength South Hawks side was not an easy task. West Wanderers also had one of their best players, Marty James, out with a broken hand. Congratulations to South Hawks for being both Minor Premiers and Premiers in Other division results were as follows:- Reserve Men s Minor Premiers USQ defeated South Toowoomba Hawks 1-0 Third Division Men s South Toowoomba Hawks defeated Dalby 4-2 4
5 Premier Ladies Minor Premiers Gatton defeated Rockville 3-2. Gatton has been the dominate Ladies Premier team throughout the season and were determined to make up for missing out last year. Rockville has done well considering the team was reformed this year under the guidance of Coach Darren Lamb who had his work cut out to get the girls to the grand finals. Two country teams battled for the Ladies Reserve Grade Premiership. In the end Laidley defeated President s Cup winners, Chinchilla 1-0. In the Colt s division, last years winners, Warwick, played a determined Rockville side. Rockville was Minor Premiers as well as winning the President s Cup. In the end Rockville proved too strong and defeated Warwick 2-1. teams who played in the senior grand finals. PRESENTATION BANQUET The Senior Presentation of Trophies Banquet was held on Friday 18 September at the Holy Name Hall. Best & Fairest Players of the Year were Premier Men s Peter Millican from Willowburn Reserve Men s Anthony Staatz from Gatton Third Division Men s Nicholas Wright from Dalby Ladies Premier Bianca Warrener from Warwick Ladies Reserves Briony Wiltshire from Fairholme Colt s Dominic Rosier from Gatton and Sam Kohn from Highfields tied for first place. PRESENTATION BANQUET This year saw the introduction of top goal scorers in the senior divisions. Goal Scorers of the Year were Premier Men s Michael McCarthy from St. Alban s Reserve Men s Simon Verlaat from Highfields Third Division Men s Bradley Davidson from Dalby Ladies Premier C.J. Mitchell from Rockville Ladies Reserves Karly Owen from Laidley Colt s Aaron Natalier from Gatton trophy winners. It may be the end of the season but the website will be updated with sign on dates, upcoming events and other soccer related information. So until next year, have a safe break and remember our thanks goes out to everyone for their support throughout the year. It would not have been the success it was without the volunteers, parents, coaches, referees and the players who give freely so others can play. Regards, Football Toowoomba Inc. 5
