1 Double Bay Men s and Women s Bowling Clubs Vol. 7 (Web Vol. 1) No. 1 MONDAY, JANUARY 25, 2010 DOUBLE BAY WATCH EDITED BY MIKE GOLLAND Board gets second OK for redevelopment project DOUBLE Bay Bowling Club s board of management has again been given the membership s approval to continue with its $1.5 million redevelopment program. More than 80 members debated the pros and cons of the project for a second time at a General Meeting on Sunday, December 20, In a secret ballot, the membership voted almost two-to-one in favour of the board continuing with the project which received Woollahra Council s Development Application (DA) approval on October 19, The December 20 meeting was called by the board because the DA approved by Woollahra Council included additions which were not known to, or approved by the membership at the first General Meeting on November 30, 2008, when more than 100 members overwhelmingly voted a green light for the redevelopment of the clubhouse as part of a strategy to secure the club s future. The project is now expected to cost 50% more than originally quoted to the membership and it followed meetings held between the building consultant s architect and Double Bay s four architects to discuss amendments to the project, resulting in new plans being drawn for presentation to Double Bay s Board of Management and as the [successful] DA to Woollahra Council. The new plan calls for the kitchen area to be extended to incorporate, cool and dry storeroom, a staff room, garbage area, male and female toilets, a café area, terrace and ramp, plus a large extension to the main roof. Included in the new quote are replacements of bar and kitchen equipment, furniture and carpet. BAY WATCH January 25, 2010 Page 1

Players in the shade as club updates sun protection DOUBLE Bay Bowling Club continued its maintenance program over the past month with the installation of new overhead sun shades along the grass areas between the three rinks. Twenty-one sun protection shades between the three rinks have been restored with new green cloth covering and associated parts have been replaced to ensure easy use of the protection. Cost of the renovations has been given as $10,000, which has prompted club officials to tell the membership that the shades must be closed at the end of each day s play. Team players, who neglect to do this, will be fined $2 per person, Bowls Club president. Eddie Fingret, has warned the membership. BAY WATCH January 25, 2010 Page 2
3 Don t wonder where the maroon went because.... White is the new colour DOUBLE Bay Men s Club has reverted to the more traditional white or cream trousers as part of its dress code for all club matches and pennant games. As from January 20, 2010, the Men s Bowls Committee, has banned the wearing of the IN white trousers with club shirt. maroon-coloured trousers, which were introduced as part of the club s pennant and playing uniform in June, This was announced by president, Eddie Fingret, last week. Fingret said that the dress code will revert to white or coloured club shirt and white or cream trousers. The blue tracksuit pants can also be worn as can the multi-colored tracksuit jacket. For the upcoming pennant OUT maroon trousers season club teams will wear coloured shirt and white/cream pants. Fingret said that members can retain the maroon trousers or they can be returned to the club for donation to a charity op-shop. The maroon trousers became part of the club s dress code in 2006 when it also changed the design of its coloured shirt. A sub-committee will be established to investigate the latest fabrics available for team uniforms taking into consideration heat and sun conditions, ease of washing etc. The decision to discard the maroon trousers follows ORIGINAL this coloured shirt was introduced as part of the club uniform in 2004 problems with ordering additional units for new members and for replacement of worn or damaged garments. The suppliers required a minimum bulk order, which was unacceptable to the club. BAY WATCH January 25, 2010 Page 3
4 Club wants five teams for this year s Zone 11 Pennants DOUBLE Bay has nominated five teams to compete in the upcoming Zone 11 Pennant season. Chairman of selectors, Gerald Weinberg, told Bay Watch this week that the Zone Pennant committee has not yet announced details of the grades for clubs for the season scheduled to start on Saturday, March 6. We requested teams to compete in Grades 1,2,3,5 and 6, but have not heard if the Zone has accepted this, Gerald said. In the meantime, Double Bay will field four teams in the Zone 11 Pre-Pennant three-match Round Robin competition starting this Saturday, January 30. Teams will compete in Grades 1, 2, 3 (section 1) and 5. The 2010 selection panel (clockwise from top left) Gerald Weinberg, Harry Stein, Harry Black, Leon Portrate and John Rosen The Grade 1 unit opens its campaign away at Greenlees Park, followed by clashes with Alexandria Erskineville (home) and Matraville (away). In Grade 2 Double Bay is at home in the first round to Greenlees Park, then plays away at Bondi and home to the Clovelly team. The Grade 3 team travels to South Coogee on Saturday, then plays at Matraville and then at home to Alexandria Erskineville. In Grade 5, Double Bay is away this week to Greenlees Park, then hosts Bondi and plays its third game away at Camperdown. Teams and reserves have been selected and players not available must contact selectors as soon as possible. The selection panel is Gerald Weinberg, Harry Black, Harry Stein (Grades 1-3) John Rosen and Leon Portrate (grades 4-6). START TO 2010 MAJOR SINGLES FIRST round of the 2010 Major Singles championship should be completed by this Sunday, January 31, according to an distributed to club members last week. Defending champion, Jack Kampel, was drawn to meet Wayne Podger, while 2009 runner up, Pepe Glick, defeated Clive Wolff in his first round encounter. In another first round match Julian Engelman proved too smart for Danny Cohen to the tune of The draw appears to be kind to the club s leading singles players with Gerald Weinberg pitted against Rob Clark, Harold Jankelowitz to clash with Ken Shapiro, Ray Jankelowitz opposed by Len Simon, and Brandon Conway against Louis Platus. 6 Turn of the Year ends at semi-finals DOUBLE Bay s quest for honours in the Zone 11 s prestigious Turn of the Year tournament finished at the semi-final stages of the singles and pairs events. The club s current Major Singles champion, Jack Kampel, exited the Turn of the Year event when he went down to Roseland s J. Theodosius at Hillsdale. Earlier Kampel in the round robin had won Section 3 at Maroubra and then defeated Leichhardt s Ian Skellington in a cliff-hanger quarter final Double Bay members who entered the singles event included Doug King, who was drawn in the opening game against Jack Kampel and Women s Club s Karen Levinson, who had Skellington listed as her first match opponent. Jack Kampel s brother, Bruno, from South Africa, on one of his customary Xmas-time visits, played under the Double Bay name and had the daunting task of meeting the Zone 11 champion, Ray Pearse, in the first round of sectional play. In the pairs Double Bay was represented by Ken Shapiro and Sam Abrahams, Jack and Bruno Kampel, Doug King and Gerald Weinberg, while Arnold Javen paired with Lindfield s Gerald Reichman. It was a surprise that the successful Double Bay team of Javen and Weinberg split for the tournament. During 2009, they captured the World Master Games Over-60+ A-category gold medal, after winning Double Bay s Major Pairs then the Zone 11 Pairs title and qualifying for the State championships after taking out the Zone s Champion of Champions pairs. However, the King-Weinberg combination finished at the top of Section 8 after a torrid clash against the composite duo of Stuart Chapman and Ian Skellington. The match was all square with one end to play, when King s first two bowls turned out to be the winning shots. 7 Turn of the Year (FROM PREVIOUS PAGE) In the final game, with two wins under their belts, King and Weinberg come up against Con and Mary Coehlo, who had lost both their opening games. The Randwick pair played well against the Double Bay twosome and held a one shot lead going into the last end, only for the Double Bay team to score two and take the section honour. In the quarter-final the King-Weinberg combination fell to Section 5 winners Scott Foster and Tony Delmar (composite). It was another Double Bay entry which provided the surprise results when Sam Abrahams and Ken Shapiro battled against higher graded opposition to take Section 6. Their winning form continued as they won their post sectional match over Section 11 s top team, Javen and Reichman, then qualified for the semi-final where their run ended to the talent of Foster and Delmar at Bronte. Jack and Bruno Kampel combined to win Section 2, while Javen and Reichman s Section 11 included Double Bay s Women s Club pairing of Mary Newin and Karen Levinson. The Double Bay s popular Harry Black and Phil Gordon Jnr competed in Section 10 and came up against well credentialed pairs from Dee Why, Hunters Hill and Belrose clubs. The club s entries in the Triples (two bowls) did not progress past the post sectional play. Teams were skipped by Karen Levinson, Jack Kampel and Pepe Glick, INTRA-CLUB COMPS RESUMED ON MONDAY, JAN. 18 WEDNESDAY, JAN 20 Club Champions 2009 MAJOR SINGLES: JACK KAMPEL *Pepe Glick MAJOR PAIRS: ARNOLD JAVEN GERALD WEINBERG *Bernard Fridman Jack Kampel MAJOR TRIPLES: JONATHAN MOSES MATTHEW FETHERSTON ROBERT FETHERSTON * Alan Simmons, Ray Novis Len Sandler MAJOR FOURS: JONATHAN CHAPMAN BERNIE GARDEN PETER LEVY GERALD WEINBERG *David Ossher, Sam Abrahams, Rob Hutchins, Barrie Brickman MINOR SINGLES: JONATHAN CHAPMAN *Martin Rickards HANDICAP SINGLES: JACK KAMPEL *Semi-finalists forfeit DRAWN PAIRS: At Semi-final stage MIXED PAIRS: At Semi-final stage *Runner/s Up BAY WATCH January 25, 2010 Page 7
